ПЕРЕВОД ПОЖАЛУЙСТА.

ТОЛЬКО БЕЗ ПЕРЕВОДЧИКА AIR POLLUTION When the Americans decided to clean up the Statue of Liberty in 1986, the first thing they had to do was to make a hole in her nose and take away the acid rain that had collected inside.

The polluted air of New York had mixed with the rain and damaged the statue badly.

And you certainly know that most of the pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses.

More and more often people are told not to be in direct sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer.

Normally the ozone layer in the atmosphere protects us from such radiation, but if there are holes in the ozone layer ultraviolet radiation can get to the earth.

Many scientists think that these holes are the result of air pollution.

Nuclear power stations can go wrong and cause nuclear pollution.

This happened in Windscale in Britain, in Three Mile Island in the USA and Chernobyl in Ukraine.

Nuclear pollution cannot be seen but its effects can be terrible.

To make air clean again we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants and also in cars and buses.

Both clean air and clean water are necessary for our health.

If people want to survive they must solve these problems quickly.

Man is beginning to understand that his environment is not just his own town or country, but the whole earth.

That’s why people all over the world think and speak so much about ecology.

What can you say about spaceship earth?

Imagine that you are flying high in the sky, Flying is much higher than a bird can fly.

Beneath the Earth revolves around you, and you sing : "Spaceship Earth is rotating, slowly spinning around.

The human race is spinning in space, round and round and round.

"Oceans and the jungles and mountains and trees, Rainbow and the sun, and the fish in the seas.

Thunder and lightning and snow - white clouds, Buildings and the city, and crowds of people.

Перевести текст THE ATTACK ON BRITAIN’S ENVIRONMENT Most of the western nations have the same basic environmental problems, but they take different forms in each country.

Here you can read about some of the dangers facing Britain’s environments.

One of Britain’s environmental successes has been the control of air pollution, especially in London.

Thirty years ago hundreds of people died every year from the dreadful London smogs.

Since then London and many other cities have become smokeless zones, areas where no coal fires are allowed.

But now the increase in traffic is threatening serious air pollution in our cities again.

However, the commonest air pollution comes from the cigarette smoke which pollutes many public places, like cinemas, pubs and restaurants.

Though cigarette advertisements are not allowed on TV or radio, you can still see them on posters in cinemas and in newspapers and magazines.

The advertisements don’t tell you that doctors believe cigarettes cause 30.

000 deaths in Britain every year.

Traffic and aircraft can cause serious noise pollution.

Air - crafts are very noisy when they take off and the noise spreads over a wide area.

Heathrow airport, near London, is the busiest airport in the world.

Planes are only allowed to take off and land at Heathrow between six in the morning and eleven at night, but during the day fifty planes take off and land there every hour.

Cars burn petrol, factories and power station burn coal and emit toxis fumes, the air that we breather becomes polluted.

This pollution is gathered in clods and with the oxygen and water in the atmosphere it becomes acid.

When it rains, this pollution lands on trees, houses, buildings, cars, clothes, everywhere!

This is called acid rain.

When acid rain falls into laks, streams, rivers and seas, they become toxic.

This is water pollution and it harms, kills or wipes out fish and plant species.

When acid rain flows through the sil, it poisons trees and plants.

Acid rain also causes serious damage to important building and objects.

The good news is that governments have been trying to reduce the air pollution that causes acid rain.

Ecological problems.

Since ancient times Nature has served Man, being the source of his life.

For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment and it seemed to them that natural riches were unlimited.

But with the development of civilization man's interference in nature began to increase.

Many people concerned about ecology today because it is of vital importance for humanity.

Everybody talk about pollution nowadays : land pollution, water pollution, air pollution.

Pollution is the result of industrialization and it threatens everything living : plants, animals and people.

It is dangerous for life.

Our plants and factories put their waste materials into water and atmosphere and pollute the environment.

There are many kids of transport in our big cities.

That is why we must pay attention to the protection of our nature and the health of the people.

The examples are numerous : the waters of the Aral Sea are polluted and it became much less than some years ago, the Caspian Sea becomes smaller too.

Radiation is one of the main problems in the world.

It is not good for health of people.

Many people died from radiation some years ago in Chernobyl and people from Almaty suffer from radioactivity.

It was tragedy.

Another problem is earthquake.

Our scientists try to forecast earthquakes, and then we can protect ourselves from them.

The people all over the world will do everything to protect their nature ; will make their country richer and their life happier.

They want to protect their future.

The Attack on Britain's Environment Most of the Western nations have the same basic environmental problems, but they take different forms in each country.

Here you can read about some of the dangers facing Britain's environment.

Air Pollution One of Britain's environmental successes has been the control of air pollution, especially in London.

Thirty years ago hundreds of people died every year from the dreadful London smogs.

Since then London and some other cities have become "smokeless zones", areas where no coal fires are allowed.

But now the increase in traffic is threatening serious air pollution in our cities again.

Noise Pollution Traffic and aircraft can cause serious noise pollution.

Aircraft are very noisy when they take off and the noise spreads over a wide area.

Heathrow airport, near London, is one of the busiest airports in the world.

Planes are only allowed to take off and land at Heathrow between six in the morning and eleven at night, but during the day fifty planes take off and land there every hour.

Water Pollution There has been bad pollution of Britain's rivers, and the government has tried to stop it.

There are now strict laws against water pollution, though it still quite often happens accidentally.

Britain and France share the problem of oil pollution from the Channel.

This has caused great damage to beaches and wildlife.

Cars and Roads The need for new roads causes great environmental difficul¬ties.

They often spoil the countryside and bring noise and air pollution to thousands of homes.

Since 1958 the population of Britain has increased by 11 per cent, but the number of cars has increased by 400 per cent.

Cars cause other problems too : thousands of people die in car accidents ; car parks use valuable space in towns and cities ; cars use a lot of our limited amount of oil.

Friends of the Earth suggest that the bicycle is the best way to travel because it's cheap, quiet and riding it keeps you healthy.

However, there are far fewer cyclists in Britain than in some other European countries, so our roads aren't built for cycling.

It can be dangerous to cycle in large cities as British motorists don't seem to notice cyclists.

Some people think that only buses and bicycles should be allowed in our city centres.

Do You Know … .

That there are some parts of the Sahara Desert on which rain never falls.

Though clouds pass over these parts, and raindrops really fall, the water itself never reaches the ground.

The heat of the desert air turns the raindrops, as they fall, back into vapour.

But now people kill our planet.

Air in the country can be polluted now by activity of plants.

Worldwide the woods disappear.

People cut down trees.

Go to the sea, and you there will see pollution round yourselves.

Pollution is very dangerous to people, the nature round us and environment.

We live among garbage and waste which created.

People pollute themselves cigarettes, alcohol and unhealthy food.

These are one of the most serious problems which exist in the world.

We need certain things to stay alive and healthy?

We need certain things to stay alive and healthy.

We need clean air to breathe and pure water to drink.

We need also food that is safe to eat and housing to shelter us.

But we can't get all these things by ourselves.

We live in larger communities so we can solve our health problems only working together.

Polluted air is a community problem.

Air becomes polluted in many ways.

Cars, trucks, buses, and airplanes are among the worst polluters.

They send partly burned gases into the air.

Air can be also polluted by smoke and gases from factories ; some of the harmful gases that pour into the air are invisible.

Dirt, smoke, and gases in the air may be carried away by wind and by air currents, or settle over as a blanket of smog.

Air pollution can cause, or make worse diseases.

They usually affect older people.

But everyone may feel uncomfortable and suffer from lack of energy when air isn't clean.

What do people do to cut down on air pollution?

Today, many factories use devices to reduce the smoke, dust, or harmful gases.

Special kinds of gasoline for cars can help reduce air pollution.

More efficient engines can help too.

КАК ЭТО ЧИТАЕТСЯ?

КАК ЭТО ЧИТАЕТСЯ?

(прим : i - ай )The word environment means simply what is around us.

Some people live in a town environment ; for others, their environment is the countryside.

Nowadays people understand how important it is to solve the environment problems that endanger people’s lives.

The most serious environmental problems are : pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution), noise from cars, buses, planes, etc.

, destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty, shortage of natural resources (metals, different kinds of fuel), the growth of population.

There is no ocean or sea, which is not used as a dump.

Many seas are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste.

This poisons and kills fish and sea animals.

"Nuclear - poisoned" fish can be eaten by people.

Many rivers and lakes are poisoned too.

Fish and reptiles can’t live in them.

There is not enough oxygen in the water.

In such places all the birds leave their habitats and many plants die.

If people drink this water they can die too.

It happens so because factories produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers.

So they poison water.

Most of the pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses.

The environment is all the things we need to be able to live - clear water to drink and to wash with, air to breathe and healthy food to eat.

We can't live without plants and animals.

They help to make the soil, they clean water and air, and they give us all our food.

The world is our home and we want to see it clean and beautiful.

At the same time we take from nature as much as we can.

We cut down forests and build farms, houses, road and factories on the land.

While doing it we pollute the environment.

We make a lot of waste, some of which is toxic.

We dump domestic and industrial waste in the country and pour toxic waste into our rivers, seas and oceans.

Cars and factories, plants and power stations pollute the air anamareit dangerous to breathe.

People have to think about all these ecological problems if they 'Want to survive.

Today environmental protection has become a universal problem.

Technological progress improves people's lives, but at the same time it brings about pollution and contamination of land, water and air.

The atmosphere of the Earth and the depths of the oceans are poisoned with toxic wastes created by the humans.

Millions of species - animals, birds, fish have already disappeared from our planet.

Natural resources are exhausted : the ecology of the planet is disbalanced.

Big cities face the environmental catastrophe too.

Concentration of millions of people on a tiny area causes numerous problems.

Some of them can be solved only at the expense of creating new ones.

Thus, air pollution is caused by the ever - increasing number of automobiles that help to cope with the transportation problem.

The need for energy generates pollution on a large scale.

Nuclear power plants threaten air, water and land.

Radiation affects people's health.

The accident at Chernobyl in 1986 was tragic for many people.

The necessity to employ all the inhabitants of the city leads to the creation of new factories that produce not only consumer goods, but wastes, noise and smog.

Another source of global danger is acid rain.

It is a relatively new kind of pollution.

Acid rains appeared as a reaction of the atmosphere to the air contamination.

Acid rains damage water, forest, and soil resources.

Acid rains cause the disappearance offish from many lakes, bring death to the forests and woods in Europe and America.
