At the start of the 20th century, a new city was beginning to grow on some flat land near the sea in southern California ; its name was Los Angeles - the name of the old Spanish (1)mission that had been there for many years.

At the same time, a new industry was just being born ; the cinema, In America, they talked of "motion pictures", but this soon became shortened to "movies".

America's movie industry began life in New York ; but by 1910, movie - makers were moving to Los Angeles, In New York, everything was too expensive ; workers, land, taxes.

Worse than that, it was difficult to make movies in winter, because it was too cold, (2)By contrast, the Los Angeles region was full of advantages.

In California, they could make films all through the year ; and everything was cheaper.

In particular, there was lots of land for sale.

The movie - makers found what they needed a few miles outside Los Angeles ; and before long, large new studios were being built in an area called Hollywood, at the foot of some small dry hills, Movies quickly became very popular, particularly after "talkies" first appeared in 1925.

Nevertheless, movies were expensive to make, and film companies needed money - lots of it, For this reason, Hollywood rapidly became (3) dominated by a small number of big companies such as MGM, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, and Paramount.

Since then, the big companies have had their (4) ups and downs, but most of them are still there.

Some old names have disappeared, but some new ones have appeared, companies like Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg's company Amblin.

(5)Naturally, Hollywood has changed a lot in 80 years!

Today the biggest studios belong to huge international firms.

LEONARDO DA VINCI

Everything you should know about Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa

It’s the most famous work of art on the planet.

The Mona Lisa is also known

as La Gioconda.

Leonardo da Vinci painted it between 1503 and 1506.

We know that the

painting was special to Leonardo because he spent so long working on it.

In one of

his notebooks he wrote, “Tell me, tell me, has one ever finished anything?

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (his full name) was born in 1452, the son of a

lawyer in the Tuscan town of Vinci.

He didn’t have a classical education but became

an apprentice in the studio of painter and sculptor Andrea Verrocchio.

He spent 13

years there, learning and working with other important painters such as Sandro

Botticelli.

He was a vegetarian.

Apart from being an artist, Leonardo was an engineer, inventor and

philosopher.

He also loved geology, anatomy and astronomy.

As a scientist, he was

ahead of his time.

He died in France in 1519, aged 67.

We don’t have any final proof of the identity of the woman in the painting.

Most people agree that it is a portrait of Mona Lisa, who married Francesco di

Bartolomeo di Zanoli del Giocondo in 1495.

The title La Gioconda comes from his

last name.

There have been theories that the portrait is of Leonardo’s vision of an ideal

woman or of an adolescent boy dressed as a woman or even a self - portrait.

It was painted on a thin backing of wood, which is now extremely fragile.

This

is why it is preserved behind a glass case.

The painting was acquired by François I of France.

He knew Leonardo when

the painter lived in France.

The painting remained in French royal collections from the beginning of the

16th century to the creation of the Central Arts Museum at the Louvre in 1793.

63

The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre on 21 August, 1911.

An Italian

painter, Vincenzo Peruggia, stole it to return it to its country of origin.

It was found

almost two years later.

Since then, the painting has left France on two occasions : in 1963 to the United

States and in 1974 to Japan.

The painting was welcomed in both countries like a

visiting film star.

President John F Kennedy opened the Mona Lisa exhibition at the National

Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, saying, “This painting is the second lady that the

people of France have sent to the United States and, though she will not stay with us

as long as the Statue of Liberty, our appreciation is equally great.

The Mona Lisa is housed at the Louvre in Paris.

He had some blue caps made of wool in a bag and wanted to sell them in the town.

The sun was hot and the sailor decided to have a rest in the forest.

He slept for some time.

When the man woke up, he took his cap off and wanted to put it into his bag with the other caps.

But he saw that there were no caps in it now.

Where were they?

Помогите составить монолог из 17 предложений по этому тексту даю 39 балов : country and people There are fifty states in the United States of America.

Two of these states, Alaska and Hawaii, are not connected to the other states.

The US is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the west, by the Atlantic Ocean in the east, by the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico in the south.

In the north there are Great Lakes.

The US is a large country with many natural wonders.

The US has almost every kind of weather.

Also, it has many kinds of land - rocky coasts, dry empty deserts, big rivers, wide plains and grasslands, lakes of all sizes, high mountains, great forests, sunny beaches, lands of endless winter.

More than 250 million people live in the US.

There are a lot of parks, forests and wildlands where you can enjoy the beauty and power of wild America.

The Grand Canyon, Yosemite Valley, and Yellowstone are among the most famous.

Many rivers cross the United States.

But the great est is the mighty Mississippi.

Native Americans called it "the father of waters".

And the Mississippi has been an important waterway since early times, when native Americans travelled on the river in canoes.

Among other big rivers are the Colorado and the Missouri.

The Colorado River rises in the Rocky Mountains or the Rockies that stretch from Alaska down almost to the south of the country.

Another big mountain chain is the Appalachians in the east also running from north to south.

The Grand Canyon is one of America's main tourist attractions.

It is so big that you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years.

Slowly, the river cut down through hard rock.

Today, the canyon is one mile deep and 200 miles (320 km) long.

The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather.

The United States is a young country.

Its written history is only a few hundred years old.

It is sometimes, in fact, called the "New World".

Over the last four hundred years millions of people have come to start a new life in this "New World".

Americans are not afraid of new ideas.

They built the first skyscrapers and they put the first man on the Moon.

They like to be modern.

They like exciting, modern cities, new houses, and new cars.

At the same time, Americans love old things.

They like to visit historic houses and museums.

They build old pioneer houses and remember the days of the "Wild West".

Americans are interested in old traditions, but they are good at making new traditions too.

The people of the United States are a mixture of many different nationalities.

Every American schoolchild learns that the United States is a big melting pot of countries.

In one city you can find people whose parents, grandparents or great - grandparents came from China, Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and every European country.

These different people brought to their new land a wonderful mixture of customs and traditions.

The Germans brought Christmas trees.

The Irish brought St.

Patrick's Day celebrations.

The Scots brought Halloween.

Shakespeare'S Birthplace

Stratford - on - Avon, where Shakespeare was born is now one of the most popular tourist centres.

But it was not so

many years ago.

In the 18th century only a few relics of Shakespeare were left - his tomb, New Place (a large house which was built in place of shakespeare's own house), the mulberry tree that he had planted, and his birthplace.

People from London and other places came to see these relics.

Most of them came to New Place where they wanted to see the famous mulberry tree in the garden.

The owner of New Place wasn't much interested in Shakespeare.

He didn't like the fact that so many visitors came to his house asking to see the mulberry tree.

So in 1756 he cut down the tree and his life became quiet.

But it didn't last long.

The people who came to Stratford - on - Avon to see shakespeare's tree at first were surprised, then they got so bad that the owner of New Place had to leave Stratford.

After Stratford lost one of the most famous relics of Shakespeare, the city fathers decided to do something to attract people there.

They asked the greatest actor of the time David Garrick to organize a festival in Stratford.

Garrick planned to do it in the first week of September, 1769.

He wanted the festival to be the greatest outdoor festival staged in England.

At six o'clock in the morning of Wednesday September 6 the festival was opened.

Many people came to Stratford.

The first day was successful, and Garrick was happy.

On the second day it rained hard.

The second - day evening ended as it began in the rain.

On the third day all the people left Stratford, Garrick returned to London very sad.

But his festival was the beginning of a tradition.

Stratford is now famous for its Shakespeare festivals.

Every year a lot of people come to Stratford for the Festival season which lasts from April to September.

Questions :

1.

What relics of Shakespeare were left in the 18th century?

2. Why did people come to Stratford - on - Avon?

3. What did the owner of New Place do in 1756?
