Environmental Protection.

Economists have long thought of the environment as an unlimited source of resources.

For thousands of years people lived in harmony with the environment but with the industrial revolution our negative influence on Nature began to increase.

Large cities with thousands of steaming, polluting factories can be found nowadays all over the world.

The by - products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the fields where our crops are grown.

There are many consequences of damaging the environment.

One of them is "acid rain".

Cars with their engines and factories have become the main source of air pollution in industrial areas.

When factories send gases and chemicals into the air, they mix and the mixture is carried for hundreds of miles by the wind and finally, it falls back to earth.

This "acid rain" kills fish and trees and slowly it kills everything.

The third problem is damage to wildlife.

Vast forests are cut down in Africa, South America and Asia for the needs of industries in Europe and in the USA.

As a result, some species of animals, birds, fish and plants have disappeared and keep disappearing.

Another problem is damage to water and soils.

Dumping wastes into lakes, rivers, seas and oceans causes water pollution.

Harmful wastes may also get into the soil or drain off fields that have been sprayed with pesticides.

There is another aspect of the environmental problem, the importance and urgency of which steadily grow.

How country disposes of its waste may have a major effect on its future and the future of the world, too.

Recycling waste and rubbish receives ever - greater care in Europe.

Cans, paper and empty bottles and other things we call rubbish are accumulated in every home.

Recycling process has double effect, the other part of it being - saving energy, which would have been necessary for producing new things.

In Russia and the former Soviet republics there are some areas where the environment is in a poor state.

Some of them are the Aral Sea, Lake Baikal, the Kuzbass, Semipalatinsk and Chernobyl.

Cotton growing in the region of the Aral Sea has used huge quantities of water, and the level of the sea has fallen by 14 yards.

For decades nuclear weapons were tested near Semipalatinsk, and the ground is contaminated with radiation there.

More than twenty years ago a pulp - and - paper factory was built on the shore of Lake Baikal.

As a result of the pollution, more than 50 per cent of the world's purest water has been ruined.

The whole ecological system of the lake has changed greatly.

After the disaster in Chernobyl the inhabitants of the nearby towns and villages had to be evacuated.

Some of them died and some became invalids.

Problems of environment are no longer problems of one particular country or one particular region of a country.

One of the most serious environmental problems in large cities in Britain is thick fog, which the British so often have in autumn and in winter.

In London the fog is sometimes so thick that cars run into one another.

For many centuries, during the cold time of the year, the English people used coal in their fireplaces in private houses, though smoke from factories contributed a great deal to the trouble too.

This kind of fog the English people used to call smog.

Unusually thick smog in London in 1962 caused the death of some 4000 people.

A Clean Air Act was passed in 1956, which prohibited the use of open coal fires at homes and in the city area.

Today, many scientists and ordinary people realize that the Earth is in a danger.

Either we stop killing the Earth or we kill ourselves.

The protection of the environment is a universal concern.

Active measures should be taken to create an international system of ecological security.

Some progress has been made in this direction.

Many people belong to Green organizations in countries all over the world.

Groups like "Green Peace" have already helped to stop some animals hunting but there are so many things to be done on our planet and our life on the Earth depends only on ourselves.

KALAHARI DESERT Deserts cover about a fifth of the world's land area.

The Kalahari Desert covers most of Botswana, parts of Namibia and stretches into South Africa.

It is one of the world's largest deserts and it is four times the size of Britain, In the daytime, it is extremely hot, but at night it is cold.

The Kalahari does not have many plants and most of the animals that live there can survive underground.

This is because of the heat during the day, but they come out at night when it is cool.

However, the climate is changing and this desert does not have as much rain as it did a few years ago.

Experts say that the wind is becoming stronger, too.

This means that the sand is moving around the desert is actually getting bigger.

In fact, the sand might soon cover large areas of farm land READING Unfortunately, this could mean that the poorest people might have an even harder time surviving in the desert.

Most of them might have to move to a better place.

1. In which continent is the Kalahari Desert?

2. How big is Kalahari Desert?

3. Where do most of the animals in the Kalahari live?

4. Why is the Kalahari Desert getting bigger?

5. Why might the people who live there have to move somewhere else?

London, the capital of Great Britain, is a big city.

It covers more than 600 square miles

and consists of 33 separate boroughs, including the City, the West End, the East End and

houses over 12 million people.

They say, big cities are not always different.

Modern buildings, modern shops and

stores, hotels and cinemas look alike in today's cities.

But some things you can only see in

London.

What are they?

In London you find Beefeaters and Pearly Kings and Queens.

You

find Covent Garden and Madam Tussaud's.

Britain has more living symbols of its past than many other countries, and its capital

boasts many ancient buildings like the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, or St.

Paul's Cathedral.

London is a royal city.

The British King or Queen has a palace there - Buckingham

Palace.

Queen Elizabeth lives there now.

Tourist can see the everyday ceremony called "the

Changing of the Guard".

Every day a new guard of thirty guardsmen marches to the palace

and take the place of the "old guard".

The Tower of London, built in 1078 by William the Conqueror to protect the city, is

an interesting place with its Beefeaters and the| Crown Jewels.

The Imperial State Crown is

one of the Crown Jewels in the Jewel House in the Tower of London.

It has 3000 stones in it :

diamonds, red rubies, blue sapphires, and beautiful pearls.

The Queen wears it on state

occasions.

Then it goes back to the Tower.

The Beefeaters guard Tower and the Crown

Jewels, and they help visitors.

London is a city, but to Londoners 'the City' is a place in London.

The banks and big

companies have their head offices there.

City offices are in tall modern buildings, or in old

buildings on narrow streets.

The office people do not live in the City, they come to the City

every day, from Monday to Friday.

Five important streets meet at Piccadilly Circus in London's 'West End'.

The cars, the

tourist coaches, the red London buses, and the taxis go round a statue there.

It is not a statue

of a famous man or woman.

People don't remember the statue's real name.

They say : 'It's

Eros, the Greek god of love'.

Piccadilly Circus is a very busy place.

It is busy day and night.

People come here to the shops in the day time, and at night they come for a night out.

They

can eat in one of the restaurants in the West End near Piccadilly Circus.

They can get food

from twenty different countries in West End restaurants.

Londoners, and visitors, can go to a theatre in the West End, or to a concert, to an

opera or a ballet.

And there are fifty cinemas near Piccadilly Circus.

West End hosts

museums and galleries, among them are the Tate Gallery, the National Gallery, the National

Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.

The 'East End' is the area of London where people from abroad have come to find

work.

It is especially famous as the centre of the clothing industry in London and as a market

place.

Every Sunday morning it becomes one of the sights of London.

London is packed with interest and it's all in colour.

So whether you're new to the city, or

you've visited it before there will be something exciting in London.
