Shakespeare'S Birthplace

Stratford - on - Avon, where Shakespeare was born is now one of the most popular tourist centres.

But it was not so

many years ago.

In the 18th century only a few relics of Shakespeare were left - his tomb, New Place (a large house which was built in place of shakespeare's own house), the mulberry tree that he had planted, and his birthplace.

People from London and other places came to see these relics.

Most of them came to New Place where they wanted to see the famous mulberry tree in the garden.

The owner of New Place wasn't much interested in Shakespeare.

He didn't like the fact that so many visitors came to his house asking to see the mulberry tree.

So in 1756 he cut down the tree and his life became quiet.

But it didn't last long.

The people who came to Stratford - on - Avon to see shakespeare's tree at first were surprised, then they got so bad that the owner of New Place had to leave Stratford.

After Stratford lost one of the most famous relics of Shakespeare, the city fathers decided to do something to attract people there.

They asked the greatest actor of the time David Garrick to organize a festival in Stratford.

Garrick planned to do it in the first week of September, 1769.

He wanted the festival to be the greatest outdoor festival staged in England.

At six o'clock in the morning of Wednesday September 6 the festival was opened.

Many people came to Stratford.

The first day was successful, and Garrick was happy.

On the second day it rained hard.

The second - day evening ended as it began in the rain.

On the third day all the people left Stratford, Garrick returned to London very sad.

But his festival was the beginning of a tradition.

Stratford is now famous for its Shakespeare festivals.

Every year a lot of people come to Stratford for the Festival season which lasts from April to September.

London, the capital of Great Britain, is a big city.

It covers more than 600 square miles

and consists of 33 separate boroughs, including the City, the West End, the East End and

houses over 12 million people.

They say, big cities are not always different.

Modern buildings, modern shops and

stores, hotels and cinemas look alike in today's cities.

But some things you can only see in

London.

What are they?

In London you find Beefeaters and Pearly Kings and Queens.

You

find Covent Garden and Madam Tussaud's.

Britain has more living symbols of its past than many other countries, and its capital

boasts many ancient buildings like the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, or St.

Paul's Cathedral.

London is a royal city.

The British King or Queen has a palace there - Buckingham

Palace.

Queen Elizabeth lives there now.

Tourist can see the everyday ceremony called "the

Changing of the Guard".

Every day a new guard of thirty guardsmen marches to the palace

and take the place of the "old guard".

The Tower of London, built in 1078 by William the Conqueror to protect the city, is

an interesting place with its Beefeaters and the| Crown Jewels.

The Imperial State Crown is

one of the Crown Jewels in the Jewel House in the Tower of London.

It has 3000 stones in it :

diamonds, red rubies, blue sapphires, and beautiful pearls.

The Queen wears it on state

occasions.

Then it goes back to the Tower.

The Beefeaters guard Tower and the Crown

Jewels, and they help visitors.

London is a city, but to Londoners 'the City' is a place in London.

The banks and big

companies have their head offices there.

City offices are in tall modern buildings, or in old

buildings on narrow streets.

The office people do not live in the City, they come to the City

every day, from Monday to Friday.

Five important streets meet at Piccadilly Circus in London's 'West End'.

The cars, the

tourist coaches, the red London buses, and the taxis go round a statue there.

It is not a statue

of a famous man or woman.

People don't remember the statue's real name.

They say : 'It's

Eros, the Greek god of love'.

Piccadilly Circus is a very busy place.

It is busy day and night.

People come here to the shops in the day time, and at night they come for a night out.

They

can eat in one of the restaurants in the West End near Piccadilly Circus.

They can get food

from twenty different countries in West End restaurants.

Londoners, and visitors, can go to a theatre in the West End, or to a concert, to an

opera or a ballet.

And there are fifty cinemas near Piccadilly Circus.

West End hosts

museums and galleries, among them are the Tate Gallery, the National Gallery, the National

Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.

The 'East End' is the area of London where people from abroad have come to find

work.

It is especially famous as the centre of the clothing industry in London and as a market

place.

Every Sunday morning it becomes one of the sights of London.

London is packed with interest and it's all in colour.

So whether you're new to the city, or

you've visited it before there will be something exciting in London.

The sailor and the monkeys

A ship stopped at the coast of South Africa.

One of the sailors left the ship and went to a town near the coast.

He had some blue caps made of wool in a bag and wanted to sell them in the town.

The sun was hot and the sailor decided to have a rest in the forest.

He sat down under a big tree, took one of the caps out of his bag and put it on his head.

He slept for some time.

When the man woke up, he took his cap off and wanted to put it into his bag with the other caps.

But he saw that there were no caps in it now.

Where were they?

" he cried.

Then the sailor heard a great noise in the trees above his head.

He looked up and saw monkeys, and each monkey had a blue cap on its head!

"Give me back my caps, you monkeys!

Stratford is a very interesting town, in the centre of England?

Stratford is a very interesting town, in the centre of England.

Everybody knows it as Shakespeare’s birthplace.

There are no mountains or deep valleys near Stratford but there are beautiful woods, green fields, a quiet gentlе river the Avon and lovely black and white houses, with thatched roofs.

The first place which everybody goes to see there is Shakespeare’s house.

It is a small house with small rooms in the centre of Stratford.

In one of these rooms Shakespeare was born.

On the walls of this room you can see many names of famous people who visited this place : Walter Scott, Dickens, Thackeray and others.

In one room there stands a little wooden desk, the desk that Shakespeare sat at when he went to the grammar school in Stratford.

There is a garden behind the house with many flowers, trees and plants which Shakespeare mentioned in his plays.

You can see a church there, where Shakespeare was buried.

There is a bust of Shakespeare that was made by a Dutch sculptor who lived near Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and saw Shakespeare many times.

Not far from Shakespeare’s house there is a very old hotel that was probably there in Shakespeare’s time.

The rooms haven’t got numbers on the doors as most hotels have.

Instead every room has the name of a Shakespeare play on it – the “Hamlet” room, the “Romeo and Juliet” room and so on.
