Nobel Prize winners
There are six Nobel Prizes every year, for literature, peace, economics, medicine, physics and chemistry.
The first Nobel Prizes were in 1901.
Their founder was Aldred Nobel, a Swedish scientist, inventor and author.
Nodel was ehe inventor of dynamite, but he was also a pacifist.

The Nobel Prizes are awards that are given each year for special things that people or groups of people have achieved.
They are awarded in six areas : physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, peace and economics.
The prizes come from a fund that was created by the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.
He wanted to use some of his money to help make the world a better place to live.
Many organizations, chosen by Alfred Nobel himself, determine who receives the prizes.
Each award consists of a gold medal, a diploma and a lot of money.
Prizes can only be given to individuals of all races, countries and religions.
Only the Peace Prize can also be given to a group.
The first Nobel Prizes were handed out on December 10, 1901 - five years after Alfred Nobel's death.
Nobel was a chemist, engineer and inventor whose most famous invention, dynamite, made him a rich man.
Although he gave the world such a deadly weapon, Nobel was always against wars and violence.
He therefore left a lot of money that was to go to those who did a lot for mankind.
Officials at first handed out only five prizes a year.
The prize for economics was first awarded in 1969.
In some years prizes have not been awarded because there were no worthy candidates.
All prizes are presented in Stockholm, Sweden, only the Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway.

A photograph that changed the world This is the first X - ray photograph.
It was taken by a German scientist, Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen, in 1896.
It is his wife's hand.
The bones in her hand (and also her wedding ring!
) are clearly seen in the photo.
X - rays were discovered by accident, while Roentgen was experimenting with electricity.
Soon after, he built the first X - ray machine.
Immediately, hospital operations were made much safer.
For the first time, doctors could see inside people's bodies before they cut them open!
In 1901, Roentgen was awarded the very first Nobel Prize in Physics.
His invention is still used every day by doctors and dentists, and is called the window into the human body.
Since the intoduction of computer imaging in the 1970s, X - ray machines have been used for other things, too.
At airports, many criminals have been caught with illegal items in their luggage.
Also, lost works of art have been discovered underneath other paintings.
In factories, many faults in new products are found every day, using X - rays.
There is no doubt that new uses for X - rays will be developed in the future.

Marie Curie was bow Maria Sklodowski in Warsaw, Poland in 1867.
She was the youngest of Jive children.
Her parents worked as teachers and they brought her up to love I learning.
Her mother died in 1877.
Manya, I as they culled her, and her sisters had to gel jobs.
Manya became a tutor for a family.
She enjoyed her time there and could send money to her father and her sister, Bronya, who was smdying medicine in Paris.
When her sister got married, she invited Manya to live with them and study at the Sorbonne.
It was then that she changed her name to Marie.
Marie studied Physics and Maths and got her Master's degree in both subjects.
When she graduated from university, she started research into magnetism.
It was at that time she met Pierre Curie, a young scientist.
They fell in love immediately and got married.
Marie moved to his house and they both started examining uranium and other elements to decide whether they were radioactive.
It took them four years to isolate the radioactive source which she named radium.
For this, they won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903.
In 1906, her husband died in an accident and Marie got the position they had offered him at the Sorbonne.
In 1911, she got a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
During World War I, she designed the first mobile X - Ray machine and travelled with it along the front lines.
Marie died in July, 1934 in Paris.
She died of radiation poisoning.
She worked hard and proved that if a person keeps to their goals, they will succeed.
For her, success came with the two Nobel Prizes she received and the fact that she was the first woman to ever get one.
We all owe her our respect and admiration.
