3. English itself is a mixture of several languages.

4. Britain and America were once described as nations divided by a common language.

Just what is difference between the English spoken in Britain and America?

5. The first English settlers to reach America arrived in Virginia in 1607 and in Massachusetts in 1620.

They all spoke English of the early seventeenth century – the language of Shakespeare and Milton.

Most of them came originally from the south and south - east of England.

Although some of them had spent some years of exile in Holland they spoke with the accents of the southern part of their home country.

To a large extent they kept that form of speech, but they soon learned to give old words new uses.

They also took words from the local Indian languages for plants and animals that were new to them.

6. Until the Declaration of Independence in 1776 over two - thirds of the settlers in what later became the U.

S. came from England.

After that date many other people came to make a new life for themselves in the New World.

All these people gave new words to the language of North America.

The Negroes who had been taken from Africa as slaves to work on the rice and cotton plantations added words and structures from their own native languages.

Some people today think that the very American expression O.

7. All these people contributed in various ways to the language which was to become American English.

Most civilizations and cultures – in their writings, traditions, folk stories – have traces of the old language.

People use English in America, Australia, Canada, and Great Britan as their mother tongue, but these "Englishes" are different.

We can speak about American English, Australian English, Canadian English.

People who live in Great Britan speak British English.

Those who live in India speak Indian English.

British English and American English are the most important kinds of the English language because people use them very widely.

But they are not really that much different.

You are learning British English, but if you meet people who come from the USA, you will be able to understand what they say.

Probably you won't understand everything, probably you will find that some words do not sound quite usual.

You will certainly be able to say that these people are not British, but you will still be able to talk to them.

It is so because the vocabulary and grammar of the language are very much the same.

But some things have different names in Britain and America.

Read the examples in the table to know these words.

The English language surrounds us like a sea, and like the waters deep sea it is full of mysteries.

English is and has always been constantly changing.

Some word die, some change their meanings and all the time new words appear in language.

There are several ways to add new words to the language.

One of them is by borrowing words from other languages.

At the end of the 20th century in English there are many words that were borrowed from Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and other languages.

When Columbus came back from South America he brought home to Spain new plants – potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco.

With the plants he brought their names.

This is how these words appeared in Spanish and later were borrowed from it by the English language.

The words that are borrowed tell us about the countries they have come from.

For example, many Italian words that are now part of English (opera, operetta, piano) have to do with music.

This is natural as Italian musician have always been among the most famous in the world.

Many of the words that people borrow from other languages are names of food.
