Nearly two thousand years ago the Romans invaded Britain and then stayed there for 400 years.

The Britons didn’t learn Latin, they continued to speak their Celtic language.

The Angles and the Saxons came from Germany and spoke a Germanic language – they invaded Britain in the 7th century, and they pushed the Celtic speakers into Scotland and Wales.

Today some people in Wales, Scotland and Ireland still speak Celtic languages.

In 1066 William the Conqueror and the Normans invaded England.

They came from France and they spoke French.

At first the two languages were quite separate.

The King and the aristocrats spoke French and the ordinary people went on speaking Anglo - Saxon.

And little by little the languages also mixed.

The result was English.

The grammar was mostly Anglo - Saxon and a lot of words were French.

The first book written in English was Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales in about 1378.

The setting up of the first English printing press in 1475 by William Caxton was very important – it fixed the language in a sort of „official” form.

From that time English has been changing more slowly

Two thousand years ago the Roman conquest of the British Isles.

They were at that time inhabited by Celtic tribes and the Romans were the most developed nation in the world.

In 55 BC the Romans invaded the domain of the Celts.

Celtic warriors fiercely attacked by aliens, and the Romans came back with nothing.

A year later, the Roman troops attacked again and defeated the Celts.

In fact, the British Isles were conquered.

The Celts continued to wage war against the Roman troops.

To protect their conquest, the Romans had to be placed in a permanent British troops - and they brought in this region their culture.

They built roads, bridges, baths and much more.

They left in the local language a lot of Latin words.

Roman rule ended in 407.

The Roman legions were withdrawn from the islands to protect the central province of barbarians, and never went back there.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) is the official name of the state which is situated in the British Isles.

Thus, "Great Britain" is often the same as "Britain" and refers only to Scotland, England and Wales.

The "United Kingdom» or the "UK" includes Northern Ireland.

It consists of four countries which are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

You can see them on the map.

Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

The UK is an island state.

The two main islands are Great Britain (where England, Scotland and Wales are situated) and Ireland.

Northern Ireland and the independent Irish Republic are there.

The two islands are separated by the Irish Sea.

The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Straits of Dover.

Once the British Isles used to be a part of the continent.

The nearest point to Europe is the Straits of Dover.

The UK is also washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the North Sea in the east.

Everyone who was born in Britain is British.

People from England are English.

People from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland are not English.

They are Scottish or Scots ; Welsh and Irish.

People from Scotland and Wales don't like it when they are called English but they are British.

More than 56 million people live in Britain.

Many of them live in big industrial cities like London.

Manchester and Liverpool, for example, are big industrial cities in the centre of England.

But foreigners are often surprised by the fact that much of the land in Britain is open country.

There are many lonely hills, quiet rivers, deep lakes and farmlands especially in the south of the country.

Everyone in Britain speaks English, but in some parts of Scotland and Wales people speak different languages as well.

The Welsh are especially proud of their language.

They like to speak Welsh, to sing songs in Welsh and when you travel you can see road signs in Welsh all over Wales.

Everyone in the UK speaks English but they all speak it differently.

A Scottish person has to listen carefully if he wants to understand a Londoner or a Welsh person.

Nearly a thousand years later, at the end of the 16th century, when William Shakespeare created his works, English was the native language of about 6 million Englishmen.

At the end of the 20th century English is more widely spoken and written, than any other language has ever been.

English is and has always been constantly changing.

Some words die, some change their meanings and all the time new words appear in the language.

The English language surrounds us like a sea, and like the waters deep sea it is full of mysteries.

English is and has always been constantly changing.

Some word die, some change their meanings and all the time new words appear in language.

There are several ways to add new words to the language.

One of them is by borrowing words from other languages.

At the end of the 20th century in English there are many words that were borrowed from Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and other languages.

When Columbus came back from South America he brought home to Spain new plants – potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco.

With the plants he brought their names.

This is how these words appeared in Spanish and later were borrowed from it by the English language.

The words that are borrowed tell us about the countries they have come from.

For example, many Italian words that are now part of English (opera, operetta, piano) have to do with music.

This is natural as Italian musician have always been among the most famous in the world.

Many of the words that people borrow from other languages are names of food.

A) Read and translate the text : Nearly 265 million people live in the USA and speak English.

Although approximately one out of eight people in the US speaks a language other than English at home, there are more native speakers of English there than in any other country.

American English is very flexible and has absorbed many words from the languages of immigrants.

Words like liaison and rendezvous (from French), and rodeo and tornado (from Spanish) came into the language because France and Spain once controlled parts of North America.

Dutch and German settlers gave words such as waffle and cookies, and hamburger and noodles to American English.

The first English speakers to arrive met Native Americans who spoke many different languages.

To trade with them, the Europeans learned words from the local languages, and some of these words became part of American English.

Native Americans also worked as guides, leading the European traders and trappers around the country.

The Europeans learned the Native American names for the places they were passing through.

Over half the states now have Native American names.
