ПЕРЕВЕСТИ на нормальный русский : George Meadows, the master of a prosperous farm, was then a man of fifty, and his wife was a year or two younger.

Their three daughters were lovely and their two sons were handsome and strong.

They were merry, industrious and kindly.

They were happy and deserved their happiness.

But the real master of the house was not George, it was his mother.

She was about 70, tall, with gray hair and though her face was wrinkled, - her eyes were dark, bright and shrewd.

I knew the story of George's mother and his uncle, whose name was also George.

About fifty years ago uncle George and his younger brother Tom had both courted Mrs.

Meadows when she was Emily Green.

George was a good - looking fellow, but not so steady as his brother, that's why Emily chose Tom.

George had gone away to sea for twenty years.

Now and then he sent them presents.

Then there was no news of him.

When Tom died Mrs.

Meadows wrote George about it but they never got an answer and decided that he must be dead.

Some days ago to their greatest surprise they got a letter, which informed them that George Meadows, who was ill and felt that he had not much longer to live wanted to see the house in which he was born.

I was invited to come and see him.

It goes without saying I accepted the invitation.

I found the whole family in the kitchen.

I was amused to see that Mrs.

Meadows wore her best silk dress.

I was introduced to the old captain.

He was very thin and his skin hung on his bones like an old suit that was too large for him.

He had lost nearly all his teeth.

It was strange to see those two old people and to think that half a century ago he had loved her and she was in love with another.

"Have you ever been married, Captain Meadows?

" I asked.

- "Not me, " he said and added : "I said I would never marry anyone but you, Emily, and I never have".

There was some satisfaction in his voice.

The Prince and the Pauper In the old city of London on a cold autumn day in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, a boy was born to a poor family of the name of Canty.

The family did not want this boy.

On the same day another English child was born.

He was born to a rich family of the name of Tudor, who wanted him very much.

All England wanted him.

People talked only about the new baby, Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales who lay in silk and did not know that all England wanted him so much.

But there was no talk about the other baby, Tom Canty, who lay in his dirty rags and did not know that nobody wanted him.

A few years passed.

London was fifteen hundred years old and was a great town.

The street where Tom's family lived was not far from London Bridge and was called Offal Court.

It was dirty, and the houses were of wood, with small windows.

Can - ty's family lived in one room on the third floor of one of these houses.

The mother and the father had a bed, but Tom, his grandmother, and his two sisters, Bet and Nan slept on the floor and covered themselves with rags.

Bet and Nan were fifteen years old.

They were twins.

They were always dirty and in rags, but they were kind - hearted girls.

Their mother was like them.

But the father and the grandmother were very bad people.

They often got drunk and then they fought each other and beat the children.

Tom's father, John Canty, was a thief, and Tom's grandmother was a beggar, and they made the children beg.

Every day Tom went out to beg in the streets.

If nobody gave him any money, his father and grandmother beat him at night and sent him to bed hungry.

But there were some good things in Tom's life.

Among the people that lived in the house there was a kind old man who taught Tom a little Latin and how to read and write.

He also told him many stories about kings and princes.

Tom liked to listen to his stories.

He also read the books that the old man gave him.

Tom was a clever boy, he knew so much!

And he could do and say such interesting things!

When the children played, Tom was always a prince and the boys were lords of his court.

At night when he lay in the dark on his dirty rags, he forgot his hunger and his father's beatings.

He thought about kings and princes, who were clean and well dressed and lived in beautiful palaces.

Tom wanted to be clean and well dressed too.

But in the morning he had to go out in his rags to beg.

At night he dreamed that he lived in a palace among lords and ladies.

Oh, how he wanted to see a real prince with his own eyes!

This wish became stronger and stronger day by day and at last he could think of nothing else.

When the twins Tim and Tom were born, their mother and father and grandparents were really very happy, but they were also a little puzzled.

You see, Tim and Tom were born into a dark - haired Irish family.

Their parents both had coal black hair.

Their grandparents also used to have heads of thick black hair.

Now, their grandparents’ hair was turning silver.

In fact, all the uncles, aunts and cousins in the family had very dark thick black hair.

In Ireland, people with black hair and dark eyes are called “black Irish, ” and this is ofen a sign of beauty.

Teir relatives, who visited them in the hospital, immediately thought that Tim and Tom were just cute as a button.

But, everyone was at a loss as to why they had full heads of bright red hair.

Tough there is no lack of redheads, or “gingers, ” in Ireland, no one could think of a family member with red hair.

It was clear that the twins had their father’s distinctive chin and nose.

Also, from their first viewing, all the relatives commented on how the boys had their mother’s eyes and dimples.

But, they also joked that the twins had been kissed by a leprechaun, and that was the reason for their bright red hair.

Afer seeing the boys, their great uncle Bill went home to look through old photos.

Tere, he discovered a picture of a distant relative : the sister of the twins’ great grandmother, Aunt Lizzie.

Her picture was in black and white, but it was clear that her hair was lighter than her sister’s.

No one can tell for sure if great, great Aunt Lizzie was a ginger, but the family was happy to say that the mystery was solved.

1 It was all joy with her now, as she sat motionless without speaking, while he administered to her wants and spoke words of love into her

ears.

She remembered the man's horrid threat, and knew that by

God's mercy she had been saved.

And he was there caressing her,

loving her, comforting her!

As she thought of the fate that had threatened her, of the evil that had been so imminent, she fell forward on her knees, and with incoherent sobs uttered her thanksgivings, while her head was still supported on his arms.

2 It was almost morning before she could induce herself to leave him

and lie down.

With him she seemed to be so perfectly safe ; but the moment he was away she could see Aaron Trow's eyes gleaming at her

across the room.

At last, however, she slept ; and when he saw that she was at rest, he told himself that his work must then begin.

Hitherto Caleb Morton had lived in all respects the life of a man of peace ; but now, asking himself no questions as to the propriety of what he would do, using no inward arguments as to this or that line of conduct, he girded the sword on his loins, and prepared himself

for war.

The wretch who had thus treated the woman whom he loved should be hunted down like a wild beast, as long as he had arms and

legs with which to carry on the hunt.

He would pursue the miscreant with any weapons that might come to his hands ; and might Heaven help him at his need as he dealt forth punishment to that man, if he

caught him within his grasp.

Those who had hitherto known Morton in the island, could not recognise the man as he came forth on that day, thirsty after blood, and desirous to thrust himself into

personal conflict with the wild ruffian who had injured him.

The meek Presbyterian minister had been a preacher, preaching ways of

peace, and living in accordance with his own doctrines.

The world had been very quiet for him, and he had walked quietly in his

appointed path.

But now the world was quiet no longer, nor was

there any preaching of peace.

His cry was for blood ; for the blood of the untamed savage brute who had come upon his young doe in her solitude, and striven with such brutal violence to tear her heart from her bosom.

3 He got to his assistance early in the morning some of the constables from St.

George, and before the day was over, he was joined by two

or three of the warders from the convict establishment.

There was with him also a friend or two, and thus a party was formed,

numbering together ten or twelve persons.

They were of course all armed, and therefore it might be thought that there would be but small chance for the wretched man if they should come upon his

track.

At first they all searched together, thinking from the tidings which had reached them that he must be near to them ; but gradually they spread themselves along the rocks between St.

George and the ferry, keeping watchman on the road, so that he should not escape unnoticed into the island.

4 Ten times during the day did Anastasia send from the cottage up to Morton, begging him to leave the search to others, and come down to

her.

But not for a moment would he lose the scent of his prey.

What!

Should it be said that she had been so treated, and that

others had avenged her?

He sent back to say that her father was

with her now, and that he would come when his work was over.

And in

that job of work the life - blood of Aaron Trow was counted up.

Mrs.

Williams loved flowers and had a small but beautiful garden.

In the summer, her roses were always the best in the street.

One summer afternoon the bell rang, and when she went to the front door, she saw a small boy outside.

He was about seven years old, and was holding a big bunch of beautiful roses in his hand.

He said he was selling roses and asked Mrs.

Williams if she wanted some.

The boy added that they were quite cheap : five pence for a big bunch and that they were fresh, as he had picked them that afternoon.

Mrs. Williams told the boy that she picked roses whenever she wanted and she didn't pay anything for them, because she had lots in her garden.

The small boy said that she was mistaken, as there weren't any roses in her garden ; they were here in his hand!
