In ancient China they olayed a special hame for the emperor's birthday.

Soldiers kicked balls made of animal skin into a net between two posts.

These posts were ten metres high.

In the Pacific islands they played games using hands and feet.

They used coconuts and oranges as balls.

In the Nineteenth Century football began to be played in English public schools.

The public schools were very expensive private schools - Rugby, Eton and Harrow - began to develop new versions of football.

The game became less violent, less dangerous and easier to control.

It became a game for young gentlemen.

Прочитайте и переведите текст : Public schools In a very separate stream of their own, often segregated from the age of five or six, are the children at the independent or “public” schools, which for the past three decades have been the cause of mоrе controversy than any other British institution.

Most public schools were founded in Victorian times, partly to provide recruits for the empire and the army.

Most of the boarding schools were sit up in the railway age, far from the main centres of population, so that the boys spent eight months a year for five years in the exclusive company of other boys.

The public schools are nowadays less obviously different from the top grammar schools in their tasks and value - system ; they are less obsessed by team - spirit and character building, and more concerned with examinations and universities.

But they still give their pupils a very special sense of their mission and confidence.

The public schools have certainly, in the last decade, become much less isolated.

Some are even going co - educational : they allow girls into the sixth form.

Most schools have abolished 3fagging and flogging of younger boys by older ones.

The most assured schools are not now fussy over long hair, wild clothes or voices - many public schoolboys now deliberately react against the "public eccent" which used to be one of their chief weapons in the outside world.

Art is no longer regarded as pansy and many schools have set up expensive art centres, greatly expanded their science sides - helped by special investment funds from big companies.

Business has become respectable and some boys play the chartered accountants business games with computers against other schools.

Many British institutions still have great admiration for the public - school values, but their future is much less assured : the public schoolboys' position 4has long since been whitling away because of the larger number of graduates from other schools.

As the big grammar schools step up the pressure, so public schools find it harder to beat them in the quality of their teaching, which pushes the fees higher and higher.

1. veneration for authority – преклонение перед властью 2.

Obsession with tradition – приверженность традиции 3.

Fagging and flagging of young boys – эксплуатация и наказание младших 4.

To whitle away – сходить на нет.

Там не понятно Although modern football began in England in the nineteenth century, the English didn't invent football : they simply gave it rules.

Human beings have always liked kicking round objects.

Two and a half thousand years ago the Chinese played a game called Tsu - Chu, which means 'to kick a ball made of leather with the feet'.

A Roman stone carving from Yugoslavia, from about the year 200 AD, shows a man holding a type of football and the Greeks are known to have played a game called episkyros.

Although the details are unknown, it is certain that these games were all played by two teams.

There are records of football being played in the twelfth century on the streets of London.

King Edward II banned it in 1314, saying, «There is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls».

Later kings also banned the game without much success.

By the sixteenth century it had become very rough (dangerous).

Most games were played in villages with as many as 500 people in each team.

They played from midday until sunset.

By the nineteenth century only rich private schools were playing football.

Each had its own set of rules which made games between schools impossible.

In 1862 a set of ten rules were written down – five of these are in use today.

The first competition cup, the Football Association Cup, was started in 1872.

League football began in 1888 and teams formed all over England, involving everyone, not just the rich.

By 1900 English sailors had taken the game to other countries.

In 1930 the first World Cup match was played : it was won by Uruguay.

(England didn't enter until 1950).

Now the World Cup is the focus of football.

The final match is watched on TV by almost half of the world's population.

Football is certainly the world's most popular sport.

The British are a sport - loving nation.

Cricket, soccer, rugby, tennis, squash, table tennis, badminton, canoeing and snooker were all invented in Britain.

The first rules for such sports as boxing, golf, hockey, yachting and horse - racing also originated from Britain.

The most popular sports that people take part in, rather than watching, are angling, snooker and darts.

Cricket is very much the English game.

A match can take five days – and end in a draw.

A form of cricket was being played 250 years ago.

Football began as a contest between neighboring villages – with no limit to the number on each side, no fixe pitch and almost no rules.

The Football Association drew up the rules of the modern game in 1863 and in 1888 12 clubs joined together to form the first Football League.

England won the World Cup in 1966.

Rugby and football became two separate sports when the rules laid down by the Football Association said that only the goalkeeper could handle the ball.

Two kinds of rugby are played in Britain.

Rugby Union is played by amateurs in teams of 15 in the south of England and in Wales (where it is the national sport).

Rugby League is played by professionals in teams of 13 in the north of England.

Golf was probably invented in Holland, but has been played in Scotland for at least 400 years.

At first, it was played with balls made of wood, then of leather stuffed with feathers.

The first rules for tennis were drawn up by the All - England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club when it held its first tournament in the London suburb of Wimbledon in 1877.

Wimbledon is still the world’s most famous tennis event.

There are a lot of sports and games which are popular both among youngsters and gown - ups.

25 millions of grownup people take part in sports.

Sports is one of the programme of all state and private schools and universities.

Nearly of schools have sports grounds and swimming pools.

Indeed, sports is a part of everyday life in Britain.

Private schools in the UK.

The school system in the Uk can proudly call itself one of the most complicated in European.

Not only it is not the same across the kind on but also the number of changes that have taken place in the last 50 years have made it equally confusing for a British personal and for a foreigner.

Let'a start from the beginning.

There are two types of schools in the Uk : state schools where education is free and private schools where you have to pay .

The only thing is that private schools in Britain are called.

Public.

Why? A long time ago when education was a privilege of the rich, the only schools where poor people could go were funded by charities.

As it was public money, the schools for the poor were called public schools.

Logical, isn't it?

However, in the course of history many public schools became very successful and turned into expensive private schools but conservative British continued to call them public schools.

Until recently public schools were either all - boys or all - girls.

Public schools can be full boarding, day and mixed.

FOOTBALL’S PAST In the early 19th century, football was very popular in the top private schools in England.

Initially, each school had its own rules and whiles the pupils were still at school the fact that they played by these particular rules hardly mattered.

When, however, they left for the universities or for business in the provinces, it became clear that if they were to continue playing football they were going to need a universal set of rules, acceptable to all teams.

Up until the 1850s, two teams at, say, Oxford University, would only be playing a familiar game if every player had been to the same school.

As things turned out, a major game was often preceded by a long correspondence with lengthy arguments about the rules.

2) In the past only children from poor families got education at schools.

Children from rich families got education at home.

Boys from poor families could go to charity schools.

As it was public money, the schools for poor people were named public schools.

Later such schools became very popular, they gave good education and they turned into expensive private schools.

But the British still called them "public".
