He was a tall fair - haired man with dark eyes on his round pleasant face.

Mr Boxell was a salesman.

He had a lot of things to sell in his small quiet shop : clothes, shoes, books.

He also sold vegetables and fruit.

Meat and sugar, flour and bread in his shop.

So, he was a baker, a grocer, a greengrocer and butcher too.

Tom was married.

His wife, Margaret, was a nice little woman, dark - haired, slim and very pretty.

Sometimes she helped Tom in his shop.

She could count well and was always very friendly.

She worked fast and thought that her job was very important.

One Thursday, when Tom and Margaret were both in their shop a short man walked in and asked for an expensive pair of shoes.

There was something dangerous in the man’s unfriendly eyes.

At first Tom could not understand what it was but then he recognized the man’s face.

It was Brooks, the burglar.

Tom knew that the police wanted him very much.

Brooks tried on a few pairs of shoes and then bought the pair which Tom strongly recommended.

Brooks thought they were a bit tight but Tom said : ”Don’t worry, they’ll stretch, sir.

” The next morning Brooks came into the shop to change his shoes.

He was very unhappy and had a weak smile on his ugly face.

But when he asked for a different pair of shoes the police arrested him as the policemen were in the shop.

They knew that Brooks had a pair of shoes a size too small for him and they were sure he would come to change them the next day.

On Saturday there was no school.

All the children were free from classes.

They were enjoying a quiet weekend.

But things were different for Tom — he

had to work.

He had to paint a fence around the garden of Aunt Polly’s house.

It was a very long fence.

Tom was standing there with a big bucket of white paint.

He looked at the

fence, then at the bucket of white paint, then at the fence again.

He did not want

to paint the fence!

He wanted to be with his friends, to go swimming and fishing.

‘My friends will laugh at me when they see me with this bucket!

’ he thought.

He started to paint, but after an hour he was tired.

He was sad and did not

know what to do.

Then he had an idea.

He smiled and went on painting the fence.

Soon Tom saw his friend Ben Rogers.

He was walking towards Tom and

he was making strange noises.

‘Sssh, sssh!

’ he was saying.

‘Ting - a ling!

I am

a steamboat on the Mississippi river!

‘Sssh - Sssh — I am a steamboat!

’ He didn't really sound like a steamboat, but

he enjoyed doing it.

There was a big red apple in Ben’s hand.

He looked at Tom and said, ‘You are

working, and I am not!

I am going to the river!

I’m going swimming!

‘Work?

’ said Tom.

‘This isn’t work.

This is pleasure!

‘Do you like painting the fence?

’ asked Ben.

‘Yes, ’ said Tom, ‘I do!

’ He stepped

back from the fence — there was a happy smile on his face — and painted again.

Ben watched him and said, ‘Let me paint the fence’.

‘No, ’ said Tom, ‘you

don’t know how to do it.

It’s a difficult job, I can’t let you do it.

’.

“It’s lucky that my wife is at home, ” he thought.

It was a very dark night, and when his wife looked down at him from the window, she couldn’t see who was standing there.

“The professor isn’t at home, ” she said.

The professor didn’t remember that he was standing in front of his house, besides he was thinking as usual about his lectures, so he said, “Oh, I’m sorry.

I’ll come another time.

And he went away.

DAILY BREAD

Miss Martha was 40 years old but she was not married.

She had her own shop where she sold bread, both fresh and stale which was cheaper.

There was a customer who called at her shop two or three times a week.

The man was not young but he was very pleasant.

He wore cheap clothes but they always looked nice on him.

He always bought stale bread and never fresh.

Miss Martha decided that he was very poor.

She often thought of him and was always sorry that she couldn’t invite him to have dinner with her.

She wanted to talk to him, to know more about him.

She liked the man and began wearing her best dress.

She wanted to help the poor man but didn’t know how to do it.

Once when her customer called on her to buy stale bread, Miss Martha had an idea and a good one, as she thought, to help him.

She put some butter in the stale bread.

The next day two men came into the shop.

One of them was her customer and the other – a young man.

The customer was very angry and couldn’t speak to her.

So the young man told Miss Martha everything.

“We work together in the same office”, he said.

“We use stale bread to take away to pencil lines from our plans.

We have worked at a plan of a new district for six months.

We finished it this morning and began taking away pencil lines from it with your bread.

You see, as there was butter in the bread the plan is good for nothing, and we can’t show this plan to anybody now.

When the men left, Miss Martha went to her room, took off her best dress and put on her old one.

The Christmas Presents

One dollar and eighty - seven cents.

That was all.

Every day, when she went to the shops, she spent very little money.

She bought the cheapest meat, the cheapest vegetables.

And when she was tired, she still walked round and round the shops to find the cheapest food.

She saved every cent possible.

Delia counted the money again.

There was no mistake.

One dollar and eighty - seven cents.

That was all.

And the next day was Christmas.

She couldn’t do anything about it.

She could only sit down and cry.

So she sat there, in the poor little room, and she cried.

Delia lived in this poor little room, in New York, with her husband, James Dillingham Young.

They also had a bedroom, and a kitchen and a bathroom – all poor little rooms.

James Dillingham Young was lucky, because he had a job, but it was not a good job.

These rooms took most of his money.

Delia tried to find work, but times were bad, and there was no work for her.

But when Mr James Dillingham Young came home to his rooms, Mrs James Dillingham Young called him ‘Jim’ and put her arms round him.

And that was good.

Delia stopped crying and she washed her face.

She stood by the window, and looked out at a grey cat on a grey wall in the grey road.

Tomorrow was Christmas Day, and she had only one dollar and eighty - seven cents to buy Jim a Christmas present.

Her Jim.

She wanted very much to buy him something really fine, something to show how much she loved him.

Suddenly, Delia turned round and ran over to look in the glass on the wall.

Her eyes were bright.

Now, the James Dillingham Youngs had two very special things.

One was Jim’s gold watch.

It once belonged to his father, and, before that, to his grandfather.

The other special thing was Delia’s hair.

Quickly, Delia let down her beautiful, long hair.

It fell down her back, and it was almost like a coat around her.

Then she put her hair up again, quickly.

For a second or two she stood still, and cried a little.

Then she put on her old brown coat, and her old brown hat, turned, and left the room.

She went downstairs and out into the road, and her eyes were bright.

She walked along by the shops, and stopped when she came to a door with ‘Madame Eloise — Hair’ on it.

Inside there was a fat woman.

She did not look like an ‘Eloise’.

‘Will you buy my hair?

Delia asked.

‘I buy hair, ’ Madame replied.

‘Take your hat off, then, and show me your hair.

The beautiful brown hair fell down.

‘Twenty dollars, ’ Madame said, and she touched the hair with her hand.

‘Quick!

Cut it off!

Give me the money!

Delia said.

The next two hours went quickly.

Delia was happy because she was looking round the shops for Jim’s present.

At last she found it.

It was a gold chain for The Watch.

Jim loved his watch, but it had no chain.

When Delia saw this gold chain, she knew immediately that it was right for Jim.

She must have it.

The shop took twenty - one dollars from her for it, and she hurried home with the eighty - seven cents.

When she arrived there, she looked at her very short hair in the glass.

‘What can I do with it?

she thought.

For the next half an hour she was very busy.

Then she looked again in the glass.

Her hair was now in very small curls all over her head.

‘Oh, dear.

I look like a schoolgirl!

she said to herself.

‘What’s Jim going to say when he sees me?

At seven o’clock the dinner was nearly ready and Delia was waiting.
