Eating the British way.

1) What's your idea of British food?

If the answer is bacon and eggs or fish and chips, then you might be in for a surprise.

Most people in the UK rush to work in the morning.

This means they don't have time to make the traditional English breakfast of egg, bacon and sausages.

They may have one at weekends though.

During the week, they choose a breakfast of cereal or toast with tea, coffee or fruit juice.

Lunch is a simple meal.

Many children at school and adults at work bring a 'packed lunch' from home.

This is a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit and a drink.

Dinner is a meal for the whole family.

Spaghetti bolognaise and shepherd's pie are all favourites.

Many British order takeaways as well!

Indian, Chinese food and pizzas are all very popular.

2) On Sundays the British get together for a traditional Sunday roast.

This is roast beef or lamb with potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

3) But .

Is there anything for dessert?

Home - made puddings like bread and butter pudding, apple pie and trifle are all delicious British desserts.

Without them no meal is complete!

Breakfast is generally a bigger meal than they have on the Continent, though some English people like a"continental" breakfast of rolls and butter and coffee.

But the usual English breakfast is porridge or corn flakes with milk or cream and sugar, bacon and eggs, marmalade(made from oranges) with buttered toast, and tea or coffee.

The businessman in London usually finds it impossible to come home for lunch and so restaurant ; but if they can make it home for lunch, they have cold meat(left over probably from yesterday's dinner), potatoes, salad and pickles, with a pudding or fruit to follow.

Sometimes we have a mutton chop, or steak and chips, followed by biscuits and cheese, and some people like a glass of light beer with lunch Afternoon tea you can hardly call a meal, but it is a sociable sort of thing, as friends often come in then for a chat while they have their cup of tea, cake or biscuit.

In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day.

They begin with soup, followed by fish, roast chicken, potatoes and vegetables, a sweet, fruit and nuts.

Then they go into the sitting - room for coffee and the cigarettes.

In a great many English homes, they make the mid¬day meal the chief one of the day, and in the evening they have the much simpler supper — an omelettes, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs and sometimes just bread and cheese, a cup of coffee or cocoa and fruit.

СРОЧНО The usual meals in Britain are breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner or, in simpler houses, breakfast, dinner, tea and supper.

An evereday breakfast in Britain consists perhaps of cereal and always of toasts, usually eaten with marmelade or jam.

Marmelade is made of oranges or lemons or grapefruit, and all other types of marmelade are called jam.

With the toast people drink tea or instant coffee.

A traditional British breakfast on the other hand has many things which are fried, for example scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, tomatoes and sometimes beans.

In addition people eat toasts with butter ( usually salted in Britain) or marmelade or jam and drink orange juice and tea.

For a change they can have a boiled egg, cold ham or fish.

At one o'clock comes a meal which is dinner to some people, lunch for others.

More than half the population has a hot dinner ( or lunch) in the middle of the day and a cool meal in the evening.

Others have a light lunch at one, and a hot dinner in the evening.

English people generally have lunch at about one o'clock.

At lunch time in a London restaurant or cafe one usually finds a mutton chop, or steak and chips, or cold meat or fish with potatoes and salad, then a pudding or fruit to follow.

Afternoon tea as a meal you take sometime around five o'clock.

You can have it not only in restaurents, hotels or at home but also in tea - shops, which specialize in this meal they call High Tea.

As it was said above, in the evening some people have a cool meal, which they usually call supper.

In other houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day.

Dinner throughout England is about 7 o'clock in the evening.
