William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

The last half of the XVIth and the beginning of the

XVIIth centuries are the golden age of English literature.

It was

the time of the English Renaissance.

By that time England had become a powerful state.

English trade was flourishing.

New sciences were developing.

This

was “the age of Shakespeare”.

William Shakespeare, the greatest and most famous of

English writers, and probably the greatest playwright who has

ever lived, was born in the town Stratford - on - Avon.

30

In spite of his fame we know very little about his life.

We

even do not know the exact date of his birth.

It is considered

that he was born on April 23, 1564.

His father was a merchant,

and his mother was a farmer’s daughter.

William lived in Stratford until he was about twenty - one, when he went to London.

We do not know why he left Stratford - on - Avon.

Neither do we know what were his first jobs in London.

Later, Shakespeare became an actor and a member of one of

the chief acting companies.

Soon he began to write plays for

his company and in a few years became a well - known author.

Shakespeare wrote 37 plays.

Among them there are deep

tragedies, such as “Hamlet”, “King Lear”, “Othello”, “Macbeth” ; light comedies, such as “All’s Well that Ends Well”,

“Twelfth Night”, “Much Ado about Nothing”, historical dramas, such as “Henry IV”, “Richard III”.

Shakespeare spent the last days of his life at Stratford

where he returned in 1597.

There he met Mary Fitton, the only

woman he loved.

She became “the dark lady” of his sonnets.

William Shakespeare died in Stratford on his 52 birthday

in 1616.

)))))) The Great Bard William Shakespeare is one of the most famous writers of all.

For hundreds of years his plays have been running in theatres all over the world in just about every language there is.

Shakespeare's plays were fantastically popular in his own time and they still are today.

The great author was born in 1564 on 23 April to John and Mary Shakespeare.

John Shakespeare was a glove maker and the family was quite comfortable.

They lived in Stratford - upon - Avon, a small but busy town in central England.

John Shakespeare sent his son William to school.

When the boy left it at the age of about 14, he had to work in the family business.

William Shakespeare didn't go to university and never received a university education.

He married early, at the age of 18.

He and his wife Anne had three children, two girls and a boy.

Sadly, the boy died when he was just 11.

Then suddenly Shakespeare left Stratford for London.

We don't know for sure why he did it.

A lot of people believe that he was thrilled by the idea of becoming an actor.

In those days theatre was a very popular and not expensive form of entertainment in the country.

People watched all kinds of plays which traveling theatre groups performed in the streets and squares.

The performances were rather primitive there was no scenery, no music, no special effects.

Probably Shakespeare joined one of such groups when he decided to devote his life to acting.

The city of London was noise, dangerous and possibly very dirty in those days.

There were several theaters, or playhouse.

One of them, the Theatre, was popular with Queen Elizabeth I herself.

Here Shakespeare began his acting career and later started to write plays.

In those days the tastes of the audiences were very different from what we like now.

Theatergoers enjoyed it when they saw cruel scenes or when there was blood all over the stage (they used sheep blood to produce the effect).

Tragedies in which the central characters died at the end were especially popular with the public.

It was round and had space for 3000 people.

At The Globe some people stood in front of the stage and others had seats.

The audience shouted, clapped, booed and laughed while they watched plays.

A Visit to Stratford

Stratford is a very interesting town, in the centre of England.

Everybody knows it as Shakespeare's birthplace.

There are no mountains or deep valleys near Stratford but there are beautiful woods, green fields, a quiet gentlе river the Avon and lovely black and white houses, with thatched roofs.

9

The first place which everybody goes to see there is Shakespeare’s house.

It is a small house with small rooms in the centre of Stratford.

In one of these rooms Shakespeare was born.

On the walls of this room you can see many names of famous people who visited this place : Walter Scott, Dickens, Thackeray and others.

In one room there stands a little wooden desk, the desk that Shakespeare sat at when he went to the grammar school in Stratford.

There is a garden behind the house with many flowers, trees and plants which Shakespeare mentioned in his plays.

You can see a church there, where Shakespeare was buried.

There is a bust of Shakespeare that was made by a Dutch sculptor who lived near Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and saw Shakespeare many times.

Not far from Shakespeare’s house there is a very old hotel that was probably there in Shakespeare’s time.

The rooms haven’t got numbers on the doors as most hotels have.

Instead every room has the name of a Shakespeare play on it – the “Hamlet” room, the “Romeo and Juliet” room and so o n.

Gentle – тихий
