Characteristics of a Successful Student

Many high school or college students do not know what they should do to be successful in their studies.

They understand good and bad grades in a general way, and they sense that they should attend classes, but that is where their knowledge begins and ends.

The following is a list of some characteristics of good students.

The idea is to provide you with guidelines you can follow which will help you get down to the business of becoming a serious, successful student.

1) ___ They are on time.

They listen and train themselves to pay attention.

If they miss a session, they feel obligated to let the teacher know why before class begins, if possible, and their excuses are legitimate and reasonable.

2) ____ They demonstrate that they care about their grades and are willing to work to improve them.

They often do not only compulsory, but also optional (frequently challenging) tasks that many students avoid.

3) ____ They don’t talk, read, or stare out of the windows.

In other words, they are polite and respectful, even if they get a little bored.

They also participate in class even if their attempts are a bit clumsy and difficult.

4) ____ They may see their teachers after the lesson as well in order to discuss their grades, listen to the teacher’s comments on their papers, and find out more about upcoming tests.

These students demonstrate to the teacher that they are active participants in the learning process and that they take the job of being a student seriously.

5) ____ They take the time to produce a final product that looks good, and reflects their care and pride in their work.

Successful students always try to complete their assignments.

All work and assignments are turned in on time, even if some of their responses are not brilliant.

A) Successful students use every opportunity to make progress in their results.

B) They ask questions that many other students may also have.

C) Successful students attend classes regularly.

D) Successful students turn in assignments that look neat and sharp.

E) Successful students take responsibility for themselves and their actions.

F) Successful students are attentive in class.

G) Successful students contact their teacher not only during the class.

H) They make sure they get all missed assignments.

I think after - school jobs and summer jobs are good for kids because they learn good habits : how to be on time, how to be responsible, and how to be independent.

It teaches kids about working for the things they want and not just waiting for they mom and dad to buy things for them.

Joan Davis : Summer jobs are fine for high school students.

But an after - school job can be problem.

It a student works for too many hours, he / she sleeps during class and doesn't do any studying at home.

Well, some parents think that it their child doesn't do well at school, he / she better get a job and learn something practical.

Bat I don't really agree.

School is more important at this age.

Maggie Martin : I'm a volunteer, which means that I work for free.

During my last summer holidays I worked in a school for the blind.

This was not just about making friends from around the country ; it was mush more than that.

It was about discovering that people have different things that are important to them, and different problems.

It was about learning hom to live in a way that is best for everyone.

Most of my time was spent working in Talking Book Library, but I also spent a lot of time with the students of the school.

I got a bett understanding of how difficult life can be, and how people can help each other.

I belive that community work is very important and I can't wait to repeat the experience next year.

Paul : I'm sure that the British have only voted for the items that they like most of all?

Paul : I'm sure that the British have only voted for the items that they like most of all.

They have chosen fish and chips.

Terrific!

The dish is very tasty and has been around for many years.

The dish is not very healthy to eat every day but we do!

As to Wimbledon, I'm all for it.

The Wimbledon tournament is one of the highlights people enjoy every summer.

Let's take the Harry Potter books.

They are very exciting to read, indeed.

To many, Harry Potter is something they can't do without.

I think that people's choice is a matter of taste and nothing else

Mike : I think that people vote for this or that thing not because they personally like or not.

I'm sure that people vote for traditional items that have been around for many years.

They vote for the things that are recognized as part of our culture and our history, for the most significant or most typical items.

They vote for what is great in the country, for what best represents Britain.

The items people have voted for are easily recognized as the British ones all over the world.

And it does not matter what country they come from.

Linda : I don't think that the British have alway made a proper choice.

To many, fish and chips is the icon fo England which they can't live without.

But i personally have not voted for it.

Why? Because the "chip" is not British.

It is Belgian.

Many people have voted for tea.

But tea is not British, either.

It came from India!

Most British people are crazy about footbal and they have voted for it.

OK, footbal is British.

But I don's like footbal.

Why should I vote for it.

Socialising in Britain

British people don't like to be embarrassed.

They worry that they may not be able to make conversation with you, or understand what you say to them.

They probably don't know much about your country (if they can guess where you arc from) or your culture, and fear they might say something that offends you.

They think you wont understand their jokes (and you won't!

. It's actually easy to avoid this awkward encounter since they probably won't come up and start speaking to you anyway.

British people like to have a lot of their own personal space.

They want their own privacy.

Some British people may worry that if they make friends with you, you may not understand their social customs.

They may also worry about interfering with your own personal space.

If you are a woman, a British man may be concerned that you will feel threatened if he starts speaking to you.

If there are several spare seats in a public place, most British people will sit away from other people.

They also don't touch each other very much, and will usually apologise if they touch someone accidentally.

It is rare for people to go to someone's house without having arranged it beforehand.

If you meet a group of twelfth grade students they are all talking about one thing : what are they going to do next year?

Some students don't want to go on with their education.

When they leave school they will look for a job.

Other students are thinking about colleges.

They are each writing letters to three or four different colleges, and sending in forms.

Colleges accept only those students who have done well in high school.

They want to meet these students before they decide to accept them.

Colleges want to know why students have chosen them, and how they will pay for their college education.

Students choose from about 2000 colleges in the U.

S. livery school has its own special flavor.

Top students may choose famous "Ivy League" schools like Princeton, Harvard, or Yale.

They are the oldest colleges in the country — excellent, but very expensive.

Other students choose large universities because they teach lots of different subjects.

Some choose small religious colleges.

There are differences between colleges and the type of study programs they have.

For example, many four - year "Liberal Arts" colleges are small and teach only the most important subjects for a general education.

State universities are large.

They teach many subjects and have some programs that last longer than four years.

State universities are paid for by money from the state.

Students from that state pay less to study there.

Colleges are paid for privately, so students usually pay more to go there.

Whether a student chooses a small college or a large university, the cost of higher education in the United States is rising every year.

Many parents find it too expensive.

Colleges and universities often have money for students who cannot pay, but it is not enough for everyone.

Some have part - time jobs while they are at college.

Studying and working at the same time can be very hard.

But these students think it's worth all the hard work to get the college education they want.
