Cambridge University

Cambridge University is the second - oldest university in the English - speaking world (after the University of Oxford) and the seventh - oldest in the world.

The story of Cambridge University begins in 1209 when several hundred students arrived in the little town of Cambridge after having walked 60 miles from Oxford.

These students were all churchmen and had been studying in Oxford at that city's well - known schools.

It was a hard life at Oxford for there was constant trouble, even fighting, between the citizens of the town and the students.

Then one day a student accidentally killed a man of the town.

The Mayor arrested three other students who were innocent and they were put to death.

In protest, many students left Oxford, some of them went to Cambridge.

And so the new University began.

It was Cambridge University.

Of course, there were no Colleges in those early days and student life was very different from what it is now.

Students were of all ages and came from anywhere and everywhere.

Life in College was strict.

Students were forbidden to play games, to sing (except sacred music), to hunt or fish or even to dance.

Books were very rare and all the lessons were in the Latin language which students were supposed to speak even among themselves.

In 1440 King Henry VI founded King's College, and other colleges followed.

Nowadays there are more than 30 different colleges, including five for women students and several mixed colleges, in the University.

The number of students in colleges is different : from 30 to 400 or 500.

There are many ancient traditions that are still observed at Cambridge.

Students are required to wear gowns at lectures, in the University library, in the street in the evening, for dinners in the colleges and for official visits.

One more tradition is to use Latin during public ceremonies of awarding degrees.

All the students must pay for their education, examinations, books, laboratories, university hostel, the use of libraries.

The cost is high.

It depends on college and university speciality.

Very few students get grants.

Many great men studied at Cambridge, for example, Bacon (the philosopher), Milton and Byron (the poets), Cromwell (the soldier), Newton (the outstanding physicist), Darwin (who is famous for his theory of evolution) and Kapitsa (the famous Russian physicist).

1. What is the second - oldest university in the English - speaking world?

2. When was the University of Cambridge founded?

3. How many colleges are there at the University now?

4. What ancient traditions are still observed at Cambridge?

5. Who studied at this University?

British University Britain's universities, except for the University of Buckingham, are financed by the State.

One particularity of universities in UK is that most students choose to attend institutions far away from their hometowns.

There are four main types of British Universities : Ancient Universities, Red Brick Universities, New Universities, Open University.

Ancient Universities in the United Kingdom : University of Oxford — founded before 1167, University of Cambridge — founded 1209.

Red Brick Universities : University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, University of Manchester — named after the buildings they were housed in which were usually built with red brick — were founded in the industrial parts of the cities during the Victorian era (1837—1901) and before the Second World War.

Red Brick Universities concentrated on teaching predominantly «practical subjects» often linked to engineering.

Two types of universities are subsumed under the term «New Uni¬versities».

First of all the academic institutions founded in the 1960s after the Robins Report.

Besides recommending immediate expansion of universities, the Report also suggested elevating Colleges of Advanced Technology to university status.

Some New Universities : Aston University, University of Bath, University of Bradford.

The Open University is Britain's single distance - learning institu¬tion.

In 2010 a total of 180, 000 students, most of them based in the UK, were enrolled, which made it the largest institution of higher edu¬cation in the UK by student numbers.

The Open University was rated top university in England and Wales for student satisfaction in 2010 and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education rated teaching at the Open University as excellent that same year.

A Sopwith Camel aircraft rests on the Front Campus lawn in 1918, during World War I.

Established in 1878, the School of Practical Science was precursor to the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, which has been nicknamed Skule since its earliest days.

While the Faculty of Medicine opened in 1843, medical teaching was conducted by proprietary schools from 1853 until 1887, when the faculty absorbed the Toronto School of Medicine.

Meanwhile, the university continued to set examinations and confer medical degrees.

The university opened the Faculty of Law in 1887, followed by the Faculty of Dentistry in 1888, when the Royal College of Dental Surgeons became an affiliate.

Women were first admitted to the university in 1884.

A devastating fire in 1890 gutted the interior of University College and destroyed thirty - three thousand volumes from the library, but the university restored the building and replenished its library within two years.

The university operated the Royal Conservatory of Music from 1896 to 1991 and the Royal Ontario Museum from 1912 to 1968 ; both still retain close ties with the university as independent institutions.

If asked what Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett have (0) in common, most people would correctly reply that they are famous writers.

But did you know that they all graduated from the oldest and most prestigious university in Ireland?

Trinity College at the University of Dublin has an interesting history.

The j

university was founded in 1592 in the heart of Dublin, the capital of Ireland.

At first everything went well and the university grew slowly.

Then, in the middle of the 17th century, life at the university became difficult because of two wars in the country.

Fortunately, the university survived and from then on many wealthy families began to send their sons there for a good education.

Today, Trinity College is among the top 40 universities in the world for Arts and Humanities and it attracts students from all five continents.

It is also one of Ireland's leading historical sites.

It has a uniquely beautiful library that contains 4 25 million books including the Book of Kells, one of the most precious medieval books in existence.

Over half a million visitors come to see this book and the library every year.

It is truly a great university.
