THE NATURE OF ELECTRICITY Practical electricity is produced by small atomic particles known as electrons.

It is the movement of these particles which produce the effects of heat and light.

Accepted atomic theory states that all matter is electrical in structure.

Any object is largely composed of a combination of positive and negative particles of electricity.

Electric current will pass through a wire, a body, or along a stream of water.

It can be established in some substances more readily than in others, that all matter is composed of electric particles despite some basic differences in materials.

The science of electricity then must begin with a study of the structure of matter.

Matter is defined as any substance which has mass (or weight) and occupies space.

This definition should be broad enough to cover all physical objects in the universe.

Wood, water, iron, and paper are some examples of matter.

Energy is closely related to, but not to be confused with, matter.

Energy does not have mass, and it does not occupy space.

Heat and light are examples of energy.

The smallest particle of matter which can be recognized as an original substance was thought to be a unit called the atom.

Recently scientists have found particles even smaller than atoms, but our theories are still based on the atom.

The atom consists of a nucleus and a cloud of electrons.

It is generally agreed that the electrons are small particles of electricity, which are negative in nature.

These particles orbit the nucleus in much the same fashion that planets orbit a sun.

The UK is an island country and its weather and climate are strongly influenced by the sea which surrounds the British Isles(Great Britain and Ireland).

As the British Isles are many times smaller then other lands in the Northern Hemisphere, they are more influenced by the ocean than inland countries with similar latitude.

The sea warms up and cools down more slowly than land, keeping winters relatively warm but also making the summer cooler.

Also, the warm sea current called the Gulf Stream which starts in the Gulf of Mexico keeps the sea on the west side of Britain warmer - frosts are rare in these areas.

The overall climate in the UK is called temperate maritime.

This means that it is mild with temperatures not much lower than 0(градусов)С in winter and not much higher than 30(градусов)С in summer.

It also means that it is damp and changeable.

1 . Nuclear power plants About 10% of the world's electric power is produced by nuclear power plants.

Nuclear power requires little fuel and causes much less air pollution than other power plants, but it can cause severe health and environmental problems when accidents occur, with a consequent release of radioactive material.

This type of energy is produced by the splitting of atoms of uranium, which releases heat.

This process - called fission - produces large amounts of steam, which is used to turn the blades of turbines thus creating energy.

The main problems with nuclear power are linked to the location of the power plants, as people are not willing to have these plants near their homes, and the disposal of waste material, which stays radioactive for centuries.

2. Thermoelectric power plants They provide about 2 / 3 of the world's electricity.

These plants burn fossil fuels, such as coal, oil or natural gas, which are all non - renewable resources.

This means that in the future there will be a limited supply of these resources.

The main advantage of thermoelectric power plants is that they are reliable and can meet the demand in peak periods.

Electricity is generated by heating water in a boiler to create steam, which is then pressurised and used to turn the blades of giant turbines that produce electricity.

These power plants cause environmental pol lution because of the combustion of fossil fuels which release carbon dioxide.

3. Hydroelectric power plants The energy produced by water can be captured and turned into electricity.

The use of a dam on a river allows hydroelectric power plants to store water in an artificial lake, or reservoir.

When released, the force of the water spins the blades of giant turbines, which are connected to a generator producing energy.

Hydropower is one of the most important renewable energy resources, because it is reliable, efficient and does not pollute the air.

Although it has high initial costs, it is cheap to operate.

Unfortunately, it has a great impact on the environment, as humans, animals and plants may lose their natural habitats.

Now scientists are more or less sure about the greenhouse effect which makes the Earth warmed by trapping energy in the atmosphere because certain gases (carbon dioxide, methane and some others) prevent heat from escaping into space.

Look at the pictures and say how people increase the amount of such gases in the atmosphere.

Add some more examples to illustrate your answer.

Переведите текст : ATOM AND ELECTRON Present atomic theories, based on the atom model, place the mass and the positive charge of an atom in a central nucleus, surrounded by moving electrons.

The nucleus is composed of neutrons and protons.

Neutrons have a mass approximately one - sixteenth that of the mass of the oxygen atom and have zero electrical charge.

The proton has a mass slightly lighter than that of the neutron and approximately equal to the mass of the hydrogen H.

The chemical elements are differentiated by varying numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus, numbers of protons being equal to the atomic number, hydrogen having one, helium two, and so on.

The electron is the smallest known indivisible unit of electric charge.

Early experimenters succeeded in the measuring the ratio of the charge of the electron to mass, and in 1910 the charge was first measured, thus determining these properties of the electron.

The electron appears to have a dual personality, at times being best thought of is a particle, and in other experiments seeming to require wave properties for a satisfactory explanation of the phenomena.

Electricity Modern electron theory views matter as basically electrical and the atom, the basic unit of matter as composed of negative charges (electrons), positive charges (protons) and neutral particles(neutrons).

Electrons move within the atom in orbits around the nucleus and sometimes move to another atom.

The loss of an electron leaves the atom positively charged : the gain of an electron charges it negatively.

Static electricity is concerned with the nature, strength and effect of charge on bodies.

The ways of charging a body include bringing it close to a charged body rubbing a glass rod with silk and rubbing a hard rubber rod with flannel.

The capacity to receive and hold charge varies.

Some metals called good conductors pass the charge on rapidly some other materials are poor conductors.

In solid conductors current flow results from the movement of many electrons.

In electrolytic and gaseous conductors both positive and negative charges move either way from electrode to electrode.

Electric current (or electron flow) is set up in a conductor when it connects cell electrodes forming a closed electric circuit.

One direction flow of electrons is called direct.

A generator current(if no commutator is used) alternates the direction of the flow (current).

That kind of current is called alternating current.

5. WHO DISCOVERED ELECTRICITY?

The story of the discovery of electricity is connected with the name of Thales, the Greek philosopher.

The story goes that one day Thales rubbed a piece of amber against his sleeve and found to his great surprise that it attracted small bits of dried leaves.

After further experimenting he concluded that this attractive force was a property that amber alone possessed.

He called this characteristic "electricity" because the Greek word for amber was electron.

Thales' great discovery remained a curiosity for more than two thousand years.

Then many other substances were found to have this curious property of electricity too.

Naturally the people of the past had no idea of what electricity was.

They thought of it as "rays" or "stream" that passed from the rubbed material.

There were scientists who thought electric¬ity to be a sort of "fluid" that flowed through wires as water flows through pipes.

Later many of them found out that elec¬tricity was made of tiny particles of some kind.

In this way they tried to separate electricity into individual particles.

There were some attempts to weigh a single particle of elec¬tricity and calculate its electric charge.

This was one of the most delicate weighing jobs ever done by a man, for a single electric particle weighs only about half a millionth of a mil¬lionth of a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a pound.

To make up a pound, it would take more of those particles than there are drops of water in the Atlantic Ocean.

Now we know these electric particles to be electrons.

When a large number of electrons break away from their atoms and move through the wire, we describe this action by saying that electricity is flowing through the wire and the electrical "fluid" that scientists of the past talked about is nothing else than electrons flowing along a wire.

A lot of scientists worked in the field of electricity doing their best to make the life of people good and happy.
