Now scientists are more or less sure about the greenhouse effect which makes the Earth warmed by trapping energy in the atmosphere because certain gases (carbon dioxide, methane and some others) prevent heat from escaping into space.

Look at the pictures and say how people increase the amount of such gases in the atmosphere.

Add some more examples to illustrate your answer.

MAN AND NATURAL WORLD.

1. Animportant environmental problem in the atmosphere is the greenhouse effect.

Some gases in the atmosphere work like glass in a greenhouse.

They are known as "greenhouse gases".

Theylet heat in, but they don't let much hea out.

So the atmosphere becomes warmer.

The greenhouseeffect is very important ; if it did not occur at all, the temperature of the plenet would be 40 degrees lower and the oceans would freeeze.

But an increase in the greenhouse effect ( caused bt an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere ) may lead to global warming.

2. We tend to imagine that ancient people were " environmentally friendly " and lived in harmony with nature.

Some people (such as the American Indians) did indeed respect and protect their environment.

But there are many examples of ancient people who destroyed the land they lived on.

The great city of Ur was destroyed by floods after its people removed the trees on the banks of the river Euphrates to use as fuel for their fires.

Although the Bible says that the cause of floods was the anger of God, the real cause of the flood was probably environmental damage by man.

If you to know what the weather's going to be like this weekend, ask a weather - man.

If you want to know what it'll be like in 100 years, ask a scientist.

The most important influence on the weather of the future is likely to be global warming.

Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the next century.

Here's what we know about global warming.

Since the Industrial Age(say, 1800), the concentration of the so - called "green - house gases" - carbon dioxide, methane and others - in the atmosphere has risen about 30 per cent.

In the past century temperatures have increased 1 degree Fahrenheit.

One opinion is that these tendencies are connected.

Industrial and transportation emissions increased carbone dioxide, trapping more heat in the atmosphere and raising temperatures.

Another opinion is that the small temperature rise is a natural climatic variation.

The next hundred years, most scientists agree, will see the earth heat up further.

We don't know what the effects of warming might be.

Warmer weather might make some areas more attractive and others less.

We don't know how to prevent warming.

Stabilizing emissions isn't enough.

No one knows how to lower emissions without crushing the world economy.

Based on present knowledge, the best way of coping with warming - if it happens - would be to adapt to it.

Перевод пж, только не гугловский, а нормальный

Human activity is changing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

As cities have grown in size and population, people have needed more and more electricity, cars and products of all kinds.

As industries have grown, more greenhouse gases have been produced by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas.

The increases in these gases make greenhouse 'glass' thicker, causing more heat to be held in the atmosphere than in the past.

It doesn't seem like much, but a slight warming could cause changes in the climate of many regions.

If the climate changed enough, the plants and animals that normally live there could no longer survive.

Greenhouse effect is the term for the role the atmosphere in warming the earth’s surface.

The atmosphere is largely transparent to incoming short - wave solar radiation, which heats the earth’s surface.

Much of this radiation is reflected back by gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone in the atmosphere.

This heating effect is at the root of the theories concerning global warming.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been increasing by 0.

4 per cent a year because of the use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal.

The cutting of tropical forests has also been a contributing factor in the carbon cycle.

Other gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect, such as methane and halocarbons, are increasing even faster.

The net effect of these increases could be a worldwide rise in temperature, estimated at 2˚ to 6˚ C (4˚ to 11˚ F) over the next 100 years.

Warming of this magnitude would alter climates throughout the world, affect crop production, and cause sea levels to rise significantly.

If this happened, millions of people would be badly affected by flooding.

Greenhouse effect is the term for the role the atmosphere in warming the earth surface.

The atmosphere is largely transparent to incoming short - wave solar radiation, which is absorbed by the earth's surface.

Much of this radiation is then remitted but it is reflected back by gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, halocarbons, and ozone in the atmosphere.

This heating effect is at the root of the theories concerning global warming.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been increasing by 0.

4 per cent a year because of the use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal.

The cutting of tropical forest has also been a contributing factor in the carbon cycle.

Other gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect, such as methane and chlorofluorocarbons, are increasing even faster.

The net effect of these increases could be a worldwide rise in temperature, estimated at two to six degress.

Over the next one hundred years, Warming of this magnitude would after climates throughout the world, affect crop production, and cause sea levels to rise significantly.

If this happened, millions of people would be adversely affected by major flooding.
