- - - The National Portrait Gallery opened in 1856.

It contains over 8, 000 original portraits and photographs.

The gallery is "about history, not about art", which means that a picture gets into the gallery if it's a portrait of a famous British person.

The artist's name and the quality of the picture aren't very important.

Isaac Newton Isaac Newton was one of the most important scientists who ever lived.

He was born on 25 December, 1642, in Woolsthorpe.

His father died before Newton was born and his mother remarried.

Newton went to live with his grandmother.

He went to a grammar school, where he wasn't a very good pupil.

Luckily one of the teachers spotted that he had a bright mind and recommended that he go to university.

So Newton went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was going to study law.

One day he went to a fair and bought a book on mathematics.

Newton hadn't read any books on mathematics and physics before and got very interested in these subjects.

Soon he became one of the best students in the university.

He spent most of his life in Cambridge.

Newton became a world - famous physicist, mathematician, and natural philosopher.

He took facts and mathematical theories and explained them.

He formulated laws of universal gravitation and motion that explain how objects move on the Earth and in the sky.

He made discoveries in optics and built the first reflecting telescope.

He invented an area of mathematics called calculus and wrote a lot of books.

"Why didn't you tell me so at once?

" "Well, you see, I was not sure myself at first", said the artist.

The Rich Man and the Gold There was once a very rich man?

The Rich Man and the Gold There was once a very rich man.

He had three cars and two houses and many other things.

One day he said, «I am getting old.

I’m going to sell everything and buy a big piece of gold.

» He sold his houses and his cars and everything and he bought a very big piece of gold.

He dug a hole near a tree, and he put the piece of gold into the hole.

«No one will find my gold here», he said.

Every day he went back and dug up the gold.

He looked at it and said, «Good!

My gold is there».

Then he put the gold back into the hole and put the earth back on top of it.

But one day there was a man behind the tree.

He was a thief and he was asleep.

The rich man didn’t see the thief.

He dug up the gold and looked at it.

«Good!

» he said, «My gold is there».

The thief woke up and looked round the tree.

«What is the man putting into the hole?

» he thought.

«I’m going to find out».

The rich man put the gold back into the hole and went away.

Then the thief went to the hole and dug up the gold.

«A big piece of gold!

» he said.

«It’s my gold now.

I am a rich man.

» He ran off with the gold and never came back.

The next day the first man came back and began to dig.

He dug and he dug but he did not find the gold.

«My gold is not here», he said.

«I am not a rich man now.

I have no gold!

» and he began to cry.

Then he went home and told one of his friends.

His friend said, «Don’t cry.

Here is a big stone.

Take it and put it in the hole.

Then every day you can go and dig it up and look at it».

A piece of gold in a hole is no better than a stone.

The Stonecutter Once upon a time there was a stone cutter?

The Stonecutter Once upon a time there was a stone cutter.

The stone cutter lived in a land where a life of privilege meant being powerful.

Looking at his life he decided that he was unsatisfied with the way things were and so he set out to become the most powerful thing in the land.

Looking around his land he wondered to himself what is it to be powerful.

Looking up he saw the Sun shining down on all the land.

«The Sun must be the most powerful thing that there is, for it shines down on all things, and all things grow from it’s touch.

» So he became the Sun.

Days later, as he shone his power down on the inhabitants of the land, there came a cloud which passed beneath him obstructing his brilliance.

Frustrated he realized that the Sun was not the most powerful thing in the land, if a simple cloud could interrupt his greatness.

So he became a cloud, in fact, he became the most powerful storm that the world had ever seen.

And so he blew his rain and lightning, and resounded with thunder all over the land, demonstrating that he was the most powerful.

Until one day he came across a boulder.

Down and down he poured and his thunder roared, lightning flashed and filled the sky, striking the ground near the boulder.

His winds blew and blew and blew, and yet, despite all his efforts, he could not budge the boulder.

Frustrated again, he realized that the storm was not the most powerful thing in the land, rather it must be the boulder.

So he became the boulder.

For days he sat, unmovable, and impassive, demonstrating his power, until one day, a stone cutter came and chiseled him to bits.

The moral of the story is : sometimes the most important thing to remember is that you have everything you need already, right inside of you.

Power is an illusion.
