Just after the Christmas two years ago, Jack and Liza decided to go away for New Year.
They didn’t want to stay in a hotel with crowds of people and they were delighted when they saw an advertisement in the Sunday Times f or a holiday flat in a village near Oxford.
It was no ordinary flat.
It was on the top floor of an old Tudor mansion.
They booked it and on New Year’s Eve they set off in the car.
It was raining and freezing cold.
They were happy and excited.
They had been driving for three hours when they saw the house in the distance.
It looked magnificent with tall chimneys and a long, wide drive.
They drove up to the huge front door, went up the steps, and knocked.
Nothing happened.
They knocked again.
The door opened and a small, wild - looking old lady stood there.
She was so thin and bent, she had long, straggly grey hair, and dirty old torn clothes.
She asked them to come in and they followed her.
The house was so old and dark and dirty.
There were cats ev erywhere.
In the rooms all the furniture was broken and there were no curtains.
There was no heating and there was only one power point.
So you could either have the television, or the lamp, but you couldn’t have more than one.
So what did they do?
They ju st ran!
When they got outside again the rain had turned to snow.
They ran to the car hysterically laughing.
They drove to the next village and as midnight was striking, they found a hotel with a room for the night.
“Happy New Year!
” cried Jack, as he kisse d the surprised receptionist on both cheeks.

Three friends were chatting excitedly as they were driving down to the south coast of England for their camping holiday.
It was getting dark, so Danny suggested that they find somewhere to stay for the night.
Almost immediately, Mark spotted a small inn by the side of the road.
2. When they went in, they saw a young policeman talking in the lounge with some people.
What was strange was that the people were wearing very old - fashioned clothes!
Tom took a few photos and they stayed the night.
The next morning, they paid the bill, which seemed extremely cheap, and then they left.
3. A week later, the friends decided to stay at the inn again on their way home.
Unfortunately, though, they could not find it, so they stayed somewhere else.
As soon as they got home.
Tom got his photographs developed.
While he was looking at the pictures of the inn, he saw only his friends and a small white creature behind them.
4. Tom felt very troubled, so he went back with Danny to find the inn.
When they arrived where they thought it had been, all they could find were two ruined buildings.
Puzzled, they asked a passer - by about the inn.
'Oh, there used to be an inn here, ' the old man told the boys, 'but it closed about a hundred years ago.
There was a police station right next to it.
' Immediately, both boys remembered the policeman they had seen sitting in the inn.
