HALLOWEEN

Halloween is a festival that takes place on October 31.

In the United States children wear costumes and masks and go trick - or - treating .

Many of them carve jack - o’ - lanterns out of pumpkins.

Fortunetelling and storytelling about ghosts and witches are popular activities.

Halloween developed from New Year festivals and festivals of the dead.

Christian church established a festival on November 1 called All Saints’ Day so that people could continue to celebrate their festivals.

The Mass said on All Saints’ Day was called Allhallowmass.

The day before All Saints’ Day was known as All Hallows’ Eve or All Hallow e’en.

The main Halloween activity for children is trick - or - treating.

Children dress in costumes and masks and go from door to door saying “trick or treat” .

The neighbors give children such treats as candy, fruit and pennies so that children do not play tricks on them.

Jack - o’ - lanterns are hallowed - out pumpkins with face carved into one side.

Most jack - o’ - lanterns contain a candle inside.

An Irish legend says that jack - o’ - lanterns are named after the man called Jack.

He could not enter heaven because he was a miser, and he could not enter hell because he had played jokes on devil.

As a result, Jack has to walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgment Day.

Fortunetelling is an important part of Halloween.

For example, a coin, a ring, and a thimble were baked into a cake.

It was believed that the person who found the coin would become wealthy.

The one who found the ring would marry soon.

And the person who found the thimble would never get married.

Today people practice cardreading or palmistry .

Children do not watch only children’s programmes.

Looking at the listings of the top 10 programmes for children in Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy, it’s clear that the most popular shows are comedies, game shows and soap operas.

No educational children’s television show appears in the top - rated programmes, with the exception of ‘Sesame Street’, a very well known programme for 3 - 6 - year - old children.

The story of the famous and talented Brontё family is strange and unusual.

The Brontё children — five girls and a boy — lived with their father and aunt in Yorkshire.

All the children were in poor health.

Two of the girls died while they were still at school.

Bramwell, the boy, was good at writing poetry.

But he died at the age of 31.

Anne, who wrote poetry and two novels, died at 29.

Emily, who became world famous as the author of "Wuthering Heights", died a year after the book was published in 1847.

Charlotte, the author of the wonderful novel “Jane Eyre", was the only one strong enough to go out into the world and live her own life for a while.

But even she died at the early age of 39.

It was nearly impossible to believe that these wonder ful books were written by young women who had not seen anything of the world except the life of their own family.

Nobody knew that the Brontё children had learned to write stories while they were playing.

They didn’t like to play noisy games.

The game they liked best of all was writing little stories of their own.

All this was only found out in 1930 by an American university librarian who studied some of the toys and hand - written little books found in the house where the Brontё family had lived.
