A)For tourists coming to China, visiting Shanghai is a must.

Shanghai is the largest city not only in China but in the world, too.

About twenty - three million people live there!

The city has always attracted people looking for a new life and business opportunities.

Lots of Americans, Japanese, Koreans, French, Russians, and Germans live there permanently.

Like most multinational cities, Shanghai accepts all cultures to produce a new type of a global culture.

B)To keep up with the city’s rhythm, tourists may use the metro system, which is cheap and very efficient.

The Shanghai metro is fast and modern.

It covers the whole city and is known as the biggest metro in the world.

Stations and trains are perfectly clean and well - equipped.

Monitors show arrival and departure time and business adverts, and give information about Shanghai sights and events in many languages.

C)If you love shopping, you will be glad to get lost in Shanghai for a couple of days, especially in Nanjing Road.

This street houses a great number of prestigious shops, restaurants, and night clubs.

There is no traffic here, which is very convenient for people.

The shop assistants are very helpful and tourists are very welcome.

In the evening the street looks absolutely magical with colourful lights.

D)Another iconic landmark of the city is the embankment of the River Huangpu, the Bund.

It is famous for its classical European buildings.

There are more than fifty large buildings on the Bund.

They are built in different styles such as Gothic, Romanesque or Baroque and others.

In spite of this great variety, the buildings stand together in perfect harmony.

The constructions in this part of the city remind people of those in New York, Chicago, London, Moscow and ten thousand other cities.

E)Among the many monuments in Shanghai, the monument to Alexander Pushkin is special.

First built in 1937, the monument was ruined and restored twice throughout its history.

Переведите текст 2 Лондон из учебника Голубева.

London, the capital of the UK, was founded in AD 43 by the Roman invaders as a settlement and a fortress.

At first it had the name of Londinium.

Due to its convenient position in the mouth of the river Thames the settlement grew and developed into a city.

In the 11th century London became the capital of England.

For centuries it was a prominent port through which wealth and prosperity came to the country.

Being an important trade and political centre, the city enjoyed greater independence than the other cities of the medieval England and even had the right to elect the head of the city, Lord Mayor.

The picturesque ceremony of the elections of Lord Mayor of London is still held every year and attracts thousands of tourists.

The city was built rather chaotically, the streets being narrow and dirty.

It grew and developed together with the developing of the nation.

In 1666 the Great Fire of London destroyed the most part of the city, which was rebuilt, but the old planning remained untouched.

Historically and geographically London can be divided into three parts : the City, the West End and the East End.

The City is the financial centre of the country, with offices of large firms and banks and the Stock Exchange.

The West End has always been considered a place where aristocrats lived.

There is a great number of sights and attractions : the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, the Nelson Column, to mention just a few of them.

London's beautiful parks are also there : Hyde Park, St.

James' Park, Regent's Park are favourite places for Londoners to visit and relax.

One may also go shopping in the West End — Piccadilly Street and Oxford Street both present a wide choice of expensive shops and boutiques.

The East End was previously considered the place where not well - to - do people lived.

The identity of the East End as a place of deprivation and poverty persisted until well after the Second World War, becoming overlaid with certain gangster glamour in the 1960s.

At the beginning of the twenty - first century, London east of the City is still seen as having a different character, claiming a certain independence of look from the rest of metropolis ; but its cultural status has been transformed.

Parts of the East End are believed to house the highest population of artists in Europe, and the East End is now considered a bohemian district.

The ugly docks, which for years disguised the face of the East End, are now closed, and new hotels, stadiums and apartment houses are being built.

Now London extends much more than the City, the West End and the East End.

Its suburbs grow rapidly.

London and its suburbs are called Greater London.

As well as it is impossible to say that Moscow is a typical Russian city, nobody can call London a typical British one.

In fact, it has become a multinational metropolis, being inhabited by people from all over the world.

It is always busy and crowded.

It certainly has its own face — millions of faces.

Maybe, this is the reason why people say : "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.

”.

Diana : For my family , there is no better place to live than in the country .

We live in the quiet countryside among lakes with crystal water, great pine trees and green fields.

We are surrounded by the beauty of nature.

You can`t enjoy a lovely sunset in a city the way you can in the country .

Looking at the open green fields and trees out in the country is much more pleasant than looking at the walls of buildings in the city.

Country life allows us to have all kinds of domestic pets and farm animals.

Most families in the country are friendly and close.

Country people are more peaceful, hardworking and helpful.

They are defferent.

They may be farmers or they may be writers or painters.

But they have a deep love for nature.

If you prefer to have time to smell the roses around the door of the house and have true, live in the country and let the city go.

David :

Where is it better to live : in the city or in the country ?

The answer depends on what you like.

Now, many people say that they love living in the country , but I choose the city.

First, in the city can get to know many interesting people, which is rather difficult.

There , everybody knows everybody and there aren`t any surprises any more.

Then, the city is much richer than the country in cinemas, theatres, museums, cofee shops and restaurants.

You can visit stadiums where famous sports teams have a game almost every week.

Local and international musicians play in the parks and concert halls.

The galleries show works of art from lots of countries and there are societies for nearly every interest and hobby : books, chess, dancing, travelling and more.

I certainly don, t hate the countryside, but I prefer it for holidays.

I will always choose to live in or near a city.
