The указывает на предмет которые ты знаешь, пример give me the pen (дай мне ручку, имеется в виду что ручку (которую ты либо видишь, либо скем ты разговариваешь знает о какой ручке идет речь и ты знаешь.
Артикль A используется как раз на указание чего ты не знаешь пример give me a pen (имеется любую рандомную ручку сам не знаешь какую) to показывает действие, в основном пишетсе после глагола.
Пример i go to a party (я иду на вечеринку, вот за одно и артикль А есть показывающий что я не знаю что меня там ожидает.
