By 4, 000 years ago, there were a number of civilizations in the world.

Most of these cultures were in places where there was good land for farming.

Yet one civilization grew on the rocky soil of Crete, an island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Crete has never been an ideal place to live.

Its coasts are rough.

The land is hilly and rocky.

In only a few places is the land good for farming.

Crete’s climate has always been mild.

Winters are cool.

Summers are hot.

Long ago the island was a little cooler and wetter than it is now.

Still, Crete has never had as much rain as the farmers there have needed.

Why, then, did people come to Crete?

Perhaps because it was at the centre of the things.

Across the sea to the east lay Southwest Asia.

There people were already building cities.

To the south it was Egypt, a growing civilization.

To the north lay Europe.

People there were farming and building villages along the Mediterranean Sea.

Crete, then, lay at the crosswords of the Mediterranean world.

This fact was very important and brought people to the shores of the island.

It also helped them to build a civilization there.

The first Cretans came to the island about seven and a half thousand years ago.

They probably crossed the sea from Southwest Asia.

Just to find their new home, these first settlers had to know something about sailing.

Early Cretans depended greatly upon the sea for food.

Much of their diet was made up of fish.

They also grew grapes and olives and kept sheep, goats and pigs.

They drank goat milk and ate goat cheese.

They also hunted wild pigs, birds and rabbits.

The Cretans lived on an island and knew the sea, they had become fine sailors.

They built strong boats and sailed far from home landing in Egypt and on the coast of Southwest Asia.

As you know I was in Crete.

I’ve brought some souvenirs from Crete.

One of them is a Pithagorath’s cup or a «fair cup», which has a line inside.

A tradition says that when Pithagoras looked after the workers who were building the town Samos, he invented this cup to moderate their wish to drink wine.

Let’s make an experiment.

If I pour water not uppper the line, I can easily drink water, but if I’ m greedy and the water overpasses the line, the cup has immediately emptied.

The moral : drink with measure or, even, be modest with your wishes.

An Italian explorer, Giovanni da Verrazano, first discovered Manhattan in 1524.

He was working for the king of France.

He raised the French flag, claimed the land for the French, and founded a small village.

One hundred years later, the Dutch defeated the French rivals when they took Manhattan in the early part of the next century.

After this victory, the Dutch held the colony until the English took it from them in 1664.

According to one story, it was as a result of the Dutch presence that the city had become known as The Big Apple.

The governor of the Dutch colony, Peter Stuyvesant, began planting apple orchards, and, in due course, the state of New York became famous for the quantity of its produce.

In the 1920s, jazz musicians began to call the city by this colorful name because it was the biggest and the best thing New York State had to offer.

Even in the 17th century, when there were only a few hundred settlers in the city, 18 different languages were spoken.

The first large groups of immigrants after the Dutch and English settlers were the Italians, who began to arrive in the early 1800s.

People from all over the Europe followed.

The Irish came to the city in their hundreds to escape starvation when the Irish potato crop failed in the 1840s.

The greatest numbers came in 1907, when 1, 004, 756 people poured into the country.

Today, about the fifth of New York’s seven million residents were born outside the USA.

Among these present - day inhabitants are Italians, Russians, Irish, Greeks, Canadians and Puerto Ricans.

About 14, 000 of Native Americans from all over the USA live in New York City, and the population is growing all the time.

But where now are the people whose ancestors were the city’s first inhabitants?

Two surviving groups of these early settlers do still have a connection with Manhattan.

They are the Delaware, who now live over 2000 km away in Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Ontario ; and the Ramapough, a community living on the border of New York and New Jersey, direct descendants of Manhattan’s original inhabitants.

When the Dutch first settled on the island, groups of Native Americans came every year to settlements in the south and north to hunt, fish and grow crops.

But by the 1740s disease, the spread of European settlers and warfare had emptied the island.

However, other Native Americans and New York’s most eye - catching modern feature, the skyscraper, are closely linked.

As these giants began to rise over Manhattan, the heroic descendants of New York State’s Iroquois became famous.

They gained a reputation as being extremely skilled steel workers in the construction industry.

Without them, New York’s most impressive skyscrapers would never have been built and New York would not have had the city skyline it has today.

The First Cinema Films.

One of the first cinema films was made by Edison, but the intervals between his photographic exposures were too short - about forty - eight photographs taken (and shown) to the second.

The human eye could not see them so fast and the movements therefore appeared very jerky.

This made the eyestired.

When Edison's machine was brought to France to show films, it was seen there by Auguste and Louis Lumiere.

These two brothers soon made a camera and projector that worked at about 16 photographs per second.

This reduced the jerkiness very much, and in December 1895 the Lumiere brothers gave the worlds's first real cinematograph show.

Their film was called The Arrival of a Train at a Station.

The film was so good that some of the audience almost expected the train to rush out at them from the screen.

In 1903 one of Edison's cameramen made a new long picture.

It was called «The Life of an American Fireman».

People liked it and asked for more ; and so more films of this kind were made.

More cinemas were built.

These first films had no sound.

When it was necessary, printed words were thrown on the screen to explain what was happening or what people were saying.

Usually music was played during the showing of a film.

If the film was showing moonlight on the sea, the music was gentle and sweet.

If there was a fight or a storm, the music wasloud and noisy.

Olga's story

In April we went to Turkey to Bodrum.

I didn't like it there.

We were unlucky with the weather, and the sea was cold.

Our room was dirty and small, and there was no TV The food in the restaurant was disgusting, the waiters were unfriendly and the entertainment team was really boring.

There was a mini - zoo next to our hotel, so every day a cockerel woke us up at seven o'clock in the morning!

Помогите перевести текст ; In the 1400s traders from Europe travelled long distances to the east by land and by sea.

They exchanged, bought, and sold things to people in Asia.

The trade route back and forth to Asia by land was very long and difficult.

Ships had to travel all the way around Africa.

It was a long and dangerous trip.

An Italian sea captain and mapmaker named Christopher Columbus believed that there was an easier way to travel to Asia from Europe.

In the 1400s many people believed that the world was flat!

Columbus believed that he could travel west across the Atlantic Ocean and arrive in Asia.

He believed the world was round.

Many people laughed at Columbus, but the queen of Spain believed Columbus was correct.

She gave him money, ships, and men.

He went to look for a faster trade route to Asia.

In 1492, Columbus travelled across the Atlantic Ocean with three ships.

After about 30 days, he reached a land.

He thought he had arrived in India.

In fact, he had really found islands of North America.

He called the people on the island Indians.

Of course, they were not Indians.

They were Native Americans whose ancestors had migrated from Asia thousands of years ago.

They lived in many beautiful cities in over 2, 000 separate and advanced societies.

Many of these societies were attacked and totally destroyed by the Spanish and Portuguese who came after Columbus in the 1500s.

These explorers came to find gold and other riches.

They came to take new land for their countries.

They killed the Natives, took their women, their gold, their land, and their possessions.

These explorers became rich and powerful.

Spain and Portugal controlled all of the people and land in what are now the southern and western parts of the United States and all of Mexico, Central America, and South America.

France and England also controlled land in North America.
