Acid rain is a term for rain, snow, sleet, or other wet precipitation that is polluted by such acids as sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
Acid rain harms thousands of lakes, rivers, and streams worldwide, killing fish and other wildlife.
It also damages buildings, bridges, and statues.
High concentrations of acid rain can harm forests and soil.
Acid rain forms when water vapor in the air reacts with certain chemical compounds.
These compounds, including sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, come largely from the burning of coal, gasoline, and oil.
Most automobiles, factories, and power plants burn such fuels for energy.
Regions affected by acid rain include large parts of eastern North America, Scandinavia and central Europe, and parts of Asia.
Since about the 1950's, the problem has increased in rural areas.
This has occurred because the use of taller smokestacks in urban areas has enabled the winds to transport pollutants farther from their sources.
Scientists and engineers have developed ways to reduce the acidity of rain.
For example, several kinds of devices remove sulfur and nitrogen compounds from fuels or industrial emissions before they reach the atmosphere.
Adding lime to lakes and rivers and their drainage areas temporarily neutralizes their acidity.
But the neutralization may have harmful side effects.
In 1990, the United States Congress amended the Clean Air Act of 1970 to reduce acid rain in the United States and Canada.
The amendments tightened standards for emissions, required fuels that burn more cleanly, and called for power plants to cut their sulfur dioxide emissions.

Cars burn petrol, factories and power stations burn coal and emit toxic fumes.
So, the air that we breathe becomes polluted.
This pollution is gathered in clouds and with the oxygen and water in the atmosphere it becomes acid.
When it rains, this pollution lands on trees, houses, buildings, cars, clothes, everywhere!
This is called acid rain when acid rain falls into lakes, streams, rivers and seas, they become toxic.
This is water pollution and it harms kills or wipes out fish and plant species.
The good news is that governments have been trying to reduce the air pollution that causes acid rain.
Some industries have been using new technologies for some time to help make factory smoke less harmful to the environment.
But we need to do more.
We can help reduce the amount of acid rain by using ours cars less or by using solar power to heat our homes.

Acid rain is bad for the environment and many of the world's historic monuments are being damaged by it.
• The Statue of Liberty in New York was a gift from the French people to the American people and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.
Millions of people visit this great monument every year.

Acid rain has been damaging the statue and has even changed its colour.
The Leshan Giant Buddha is located in the eastern side of the Mui River in the Sichuan Province of China.
It is 70.
7 metres high.
Begun in 713 AD and finished in 803 AD, the statue took people more than 90 years to carve from stone.
It is the world's largest stone Buddha.
It had been nearly destroyed by wind erosion and acid rain before 1963 when the Chinese government began to repair it.
Nowadays, the maintenance work is still in progress in an effort to restore this beautiful monument.
• The Great Sphinx in Giza is one of the most fascinating historical monuments of all and a national symbol of the ancient and modern Egypt.
