The History of Entertainment .

Nearly everyone enjoys entertainment .

The beginnings of popular entertainment go back to prehistoric times, when dance, music and storytelling were very important .

The traditions of entertainment began in ancient Greece about 2.

500 years ago with the developmeof Greek drama .

In those days they organized festivals to celebrate Dionysus , the Greek god of wine and new life, with song and dance .

Later poest began to write stories for a large group of performers (a chorus and an actor ) .

Then they introduced antother actor which made a dialogue between characters possible .

There were two forums of classical Greek drama - tragedy and comedy .

The Romans continued the traditions of Greece and developed other kinds of entertainment as well.

The beginnigs of the circus are connected with gladiators fighting in public arenas.

In the Middle Ages the church considered entertainment and drama wrong , but by and by drama reappeared with religious and moral plays .

In the time of Renaissance the theatre became less religious and there was a new interest in Greek and Roman drama .

Common people preferred comidies which were performed by a travelling group of actors.

At first, the actors had no text , only an idea of what was going to happen and had to improvise .

They usually performed on high platforms in public places.

The actors offered entertainment which included plays , songs and dances .

The Golden Age of Theatre began when the first special theatres were built .

The first of such theaters was opened in London in 1652.

Soon there appeared a few others including the famous Globe Theatre.

Among the writers who worked for these theaters was William shakespeare, one of the greatest dramatist in any language.

Shakespeare gave his audience great literature but at the same time he gave them popular entertainment .

Nowadays people entertain themselves by listening to music, watching TV programmes, films and videos, going to concerts and circus show but the theatre is still among our favorite entertainment.

When people think now of the Victorian period, it is often seen as a time of strict moral standards when people were very serious and often pretended to have better moral principles than they actually had, marriages were always permanent and sex was never mentioned.

This way of life and many of the Victorian ideas may seem strange to us and often rather hard, but the Victorians were contented, and they were satisfied with few pleasures.

In a Victorian middle - class family farther, known as Papa, with his beard or side - whiskers, was the Head of the House and the breadwinner, and everyone, especially the children, treated him with the greatest respect.

His word was law for all household : his wife, children and servants.

He sat at the head of the table and carved the joint of meat at dinner.

The youngest members of the family were not supposed to talk unless spoken to by a grown - up.

Mama kept her large family in order, and used a cane, if necessary.

With eight, ten, twelve or more children, she was a very busy mother, for there were no vacuum cleaners, washing machines or electrical gadgets in the house.

Tinned goods and foods prepared in packets were unknown.

Clothes were mostly made at home or at a dressmaker’s in the town.

After she was thirty, Mama was considered quite middle - aged and often took to wearing a little lace cap in the house.

At the end of the day Papa took family prayers when everyone, including the servants, knelt down in the dining room or study.

He also led the family to church on Sunday.

Sunday was a very solemn day and as little work as possible was done.

No shops were open and there were certainly no amusements.

Everyone put on their best clothes, which were usually stiff and uncomfortable.

On Sunday afternoons the family often went for a walk, but no games were allowed.

Even picture books were forbidden on Sundays ; Sunday reading included Bible and certain books about the saints.

Although there were no radio sets, television, cinemas or motor cars, the Victorians didn’t find the life dull.

People worked longer hours, often twelve or fourteen hours a day.

Amusements were simple and the family often gathered round the piano to sing the latest popular songs, or entertained each other by reciting or playing the piano.

Public readings from Dickens and recitations were popular, and drew large audiences.

In London and the large towns the music halls were not considered quite respectable, but the theatre was sometimes visited.

Children very rarely went to any entertainment, except perhaps to the circus or to a pantomime.

They had their parties, with many of the games which are still played, like blind man’s buff.

Children had plenty of books.

Many of the best children’s stories were written in Victorian days : Alice in Wonderland, The Water Babies, Tom Brown’s Schooldays, Black Beauty, Little Women and Treasure Island.

The First Cinema Films.

One of the first cinema films was made by Edison, but the intervals between his photographic exposures were too short - about forty - eight photographs taken (and shown) to the second.

The human eye could not see them so fast and the movements therefore appeared very jerky.

This made the eyestired.

When Edison's machine was brought to France to show films, it was seen there by Auguste and Louis Lumiere.

These two brothers soon made a camera and projector that worked at about 16 photographs per second.

This reduced the jerkiness very much, and in December 1895 the Lumiere brothers gave the worlds's first real cinematograph show.

Their film was called The Arrival of a Train at a Station.

The film was so good that some of the audience almost expected the train to rush out at them from the screen.

In 1903 one of Edison's cameramen made a new long picture.

It was called «The Life of an American Fireman».

People liked it and asked for more ; and so more films of this kind were made.

More cinemas were built.

These first films had no sound.

When it was necessary, printed words were thrown on the screen to explain what was happening or what people were saying.

Usually music was played during the showing of a film.

If the film was showing moonlight on the sea, the music was gentle and sweet.

If there was a fight or a storm, the music wasloud and noisy.

There is no need to rack one's brains about outings in Moscow as the cultural life is intense.

A lot of famous theatres and galleries are there.

The Bolshoi and the Maly Theatres are in the centre of Moscow in Teatralnaya Square.

Just round the corner there is the Moscow Art Theatre (the MkhAT).

The Operetta Theatre is a two - minute walk from the Teatralnaya Square as well.

It's incredible, but there are about ninety theatres in Moscow (apart from the different studios and theatrical societies), more than seventy museums and a great number of exhibitions of all kinds.

In spite of the wide choice, it is not easy to recommend something to a foreigner.

Tastes differ, you know.

But even if you have no idea of the person's interests, there are some places to suggest.

They may not be at the top of the list of Moscow entertainment, but they promise great enjoyment for a person of any age and background.

One of these places is the fairy world of the Yury Nikulin Old Circus on Tsvetnoi Boulevard.

It is really old, one of the oldest circuses in Russia.

It was opened in 1880 and since that time has been working non - stop (even during the Great Patriotic War).

The Old Circus has always had the reputation of one of the best circuses in the world.

It is famous for its very good programmes for children.

People still remember brilliant clowns like Karandash and Oleg Popov.

Vury Nikulin also worked there and now the circus is named after him : the Nikulinsky Circus.

In 1980s, the circus was rebuilt, but the atmosphere of the Old Circus remained the same : warm and homelike.

Today, more than 2000 spectators can watch amazing programmes.

Wild animals, like tigers and elephants, often take part in the performances.

If you want to see sea animal performances, you'll have to go to another kind of circus : the Moscow Dolphinarium.

It is the best opportunity for those who want to see marine mammals, such as dolphins, sea lions and seals.

The performance is rather short (it only lasts for about one hour), but the actors are splendid and amaze adults as well as kids.

People can admire a huge white whale and several dolphins performing together.

And what a delight it is when a dolphin touches your hand!

These places of public entertainment are different from other more popular attractions.

They seem to be more real and less commercial.

It's quite possible that it's this kind of entertainment that attracts people to Moscow.

Olga's story

In April we went to Turkey to Bodrum.

I didn't like it there.

We were unlucky with the weather, and the sea was cold.

Our room was dirty and small, and there was no TV The food in the restaurant was disgusting, the waiters were unfriendly and the entertainment team was really boring.

There was a mini - zoo next to our hotel, so every day a cockerel woke us up at seven o'clock in the morning!

William Shakespeare is one of the most famous writers of all.

For hundreds of years his plays have been running in theatres all over the world in just about every language there is.

Shakespeare's plays were fantastically popular in his own time and they still are today.

The great author was born in 1564 on 23 April to John and Mary Shakespeare.

John Shakespeare was a glove maker and the family was quite comfortable.

They lived in Stratford - upon - Avon, a small but busy town in central England.

John Shakespeare sent his son William to school.

When the boy left it at the age of about 14, he had to work in the family business.

William Shakespeare didn't go to university and never received a university education.

He married early, at the age of 18.

He and his wife Anne had three children, two girls and a boy.

Sadly, the boy died when he was just 11.

Then suddenly Shakespeare left Stratford for London.

We don't know for sure why he did it.

A lot of people believe that he was thrilled by the idea of becoming an actor.

In those days theatre was a very popular and not expensive form of entertainment in the country.

People watched all kinds of plays which traveling theatre groups performed in the streets and squares.

The performances were rather primitive there was no scenery, no music, no special effects.

Probably Shakespeare joined one of such groups when he decided to devote his life to acting.

The city of London was noise, dangerous and possibly very dirty in those days.

There were several theaters, or playhouse.

One of them, the Theatre, was popular with Queen Elizabeth I herself.

Here Shakespeare began his acting career and later started to write plays.

In those days the tastes of the audiences were very different from what we like now.

Theatergoers enjoyed it when they saw cruel scenes or when there was blood all over the stage (they used sheep blood to produce the effect).

Tragedies in which the central characters died at the end were especially popular with the public.
