An unusual gallery.

1) It was a beautiful afternoon in the woods near the village of Montignac.

The sky was blue and autumn leaves covered the ground.

Four friends strolled happily among the tall trees, telling stories about treasures that people had hidden in the forest.

2) As they were walking, one of the boys fell over.

When the others ran to help him, they saw that there was a hole in the ground.

Could this be a tunnel with hidden treasures in it?

The boys started to dig.

Trying to make the hole bigger so that they could climb in and have a look.

By this time though, it was getting dark and they didn't have a torch, so they decided to come back early the next day.

3) They returned to the woods before school.

One by one.

The boys lit their torches and crawled into the small dark tunnel.

After about ten minutes, the boy who was at the front let out a loud gasp.

When he pointed his torch at the wall, everyone was amazed to see the walls covered with colourful pictures of horses, deer and oxen.

The friends ran quickly to school and told their teacher all about their fantastic discovery.

She called an expert who went immediately to examine the paintings.

4) Later that day, their teacher asked the boys to stay behind after school.

They thought that they had done something wrong, but they were relieved when they saw their teacher's smiling face.

The expert had confirmed that the boys were the first modern people to lay eyes upon the famous Lascaux paintings, which were at least 17, 000 years old.

They felt really proud.

To write a story, we first decide on the type of story, the plot and the main characters.

Our story can be a comedy, an adventure, a fairy tale etc.

We normally use past tenses in stories.

In the first paragraph, we write when and where the event happened, who the main characters in the story were and what happened first.

In the main body, we describe the events in the order they happened, leading to the climax event (the most important event).

We normally use linking words > ; n as, wisile before etu to show the sequence of events.

In the conclusion, we write what happened in the end and how the people in the story felt.

The first permanent theatre in England was established by James Burbage (an actor) and was called just The Theatre.

The Globe is the most famous theatre.

It was built by the sons of Burbage in 1599 on the southern shore of the Thames.

The Globe especially famous for William Shakespeare's plays that were produced there.

The Globe didn’t have a roof and it resembled the inn yard.

Ordinary poor people were standing in front of the stage while the rich enjoyed the performance from the galleries.

The scenery of the plays had rich decorations.

Most of the costumes were donated by rich patrons.

The clothes were always bright and luxurious.

All actors had to know dancing, singing and stage fencing.

They also used a lot of improvisation.

Famous actors of that time were for example Edward Alleyn and Richard Burbage.

Сделайте краткий пересказ этого текста : Cinema is much younger than theatre.

It was born at the end of the 19th century.

The first people who showed the first movies to a paying public were the Lumiere Brothers of France.

They did this at the Grand Cafe, Boulevard des Capucines, Paris, on the 20th February 1896.

This was the first cinema show and it was quickly followed by many others in all parts of the world.

The first films showed moving people and transport or newsreels of processions and wars, and short comedies.

In 1901 France was the first country to produce a dramatic film, The Story of a Crime, which was followed by The Great Train Robbery in the United States in 1903.

At first, films were shown anywhere : in music halls, clubs and shops.

By 1908, special film theatres were being built to give regular programmes.

At this time cinema rapidly developed in both the New and the Old World.

Charlie Chaplin made his first film, Making a Living, in 1914 in the USA.

The Russian film industry was now going its own way.

It produced such great films as Protazanov's The Queen of Spades (1916) and Father Sergius (1918).

Both films starred Ivan Mosjoukhin, the famous actor.

A little later Russia's great achievement in cinema was connected with its directors such as Eisenstein (The Battleship "Potemkin"), Pudovkin (Mother), Kuleshov (By the Law), Dovzhenko (Earth), and others.

Then, in 1927, Warner Brothers in Hollywood made the first film in which an actor sang and spoke.

The film was called Jazz Singer.

It opened a new era in films - the era of the "talkies".

The film mostly told its story with titles, but it had three songs and a short dialogue.

There were long lines of people in front of the Warner Theatre in New York.

The silent film was dead within a year.

The first one hundred percent sound film, Lights of New York, appeared in 1928.

The first colour films were made in the 1930s, but black - and - white films are still made today.

The Romans invaded Britain in AD 43 and, chasing ancient Britons along the Thames, they came to the first place where it was easy to cross.

They built a garrison there – and London was born.

They also erected a bridge over the river.

The Garrison became a major trading post.

Later, the bridge suffered neglect and the whole area was raided by the Vikings.

In AD 886 Alfred the Great drove out the raiders, the bridge was repaired and the city prospered again.

A hundred years later, the Vikings returned but King Ethelred sailed up the Thames, attached ropes to London Bridge, headed downriver and pulled it down.

London is the capital of England, the capital of Great Britain, and the capital of the United Kingdom.

It is the largest town in Europe and one of the oldest towns in the world.

The old Celts gave it its name, the Romans!

Made it the centre of their new colony, the Germanic invaders tried to burn and to destroy it, the victorious Normans made it the capital of the country.

The central part of London is full of historical remains.

Nearly every building, every bridge, every street, palace, house, and stone — each of them has its own story, its own past.

In London past and present are so mixed together that they cannot easily be separated and when you are in London you see the past in the present and the present in the past.

The oldest part of London is called the City.

In the City the streets and pavements are very narrow and the traffic is very heavy on weekdays.

That is because the most important London firms and banks have offices there.

But at weekends the City is almost dead.

The most fashionable and the most expensive part to live in is the West End.

It is situated between the City and Hyde Park.

The City and the West End are the heart of London ; they are the parts which everybody who comes to London must see and wants to see, because they are more interesting than any other part of London.

All the most interesting buildings, shops and offices are situated here.

The Tower of London, the Bank of England, the Mansion House where the Lord Mayor lives, the Law Courts, and many interesting old churches are situated in the City.

The Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery and many theatres and good shops are in the West End.

London has many bridges over the Thames, more than twenty but the most interesting of them all is the Tower Bridge situated near the Tower of London.

The Tower of London is an old castle, with high walls, high towers, small windows and large gardens.

Once it was a royal residence, a strong fortress and a state prison.

Here many important people, among them two wives of Henry VIII, were imprisoned and beheaded.

One of the oldest and the most famous places of London is St.

Paul's Cathedral.

It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times since the original construction in the 7th century.

It stands in the centre of the so - called Little Britain.

A large part of Little Britain was destroyed during the war : the houses that were close to the Cathedral's walls disappeared and for the first time in centuries St.

Paul's Cathedral's beauty can be seen.
