As scientist usually say, an animal is any living thing(including people) that is not a plant.
No one knows how many different species of wild plants and animals there are on our planet.
People occasionally discover hundreds of new kinds every year.
In what way are animals different from plants?
This question is not always easy to answer.
Animals can be mammals ( elephant, cows, lions, tigers, cats, dogs, wolves, foxes, sharks, whales)and non - mammals (crocodiles, snakes, fish, birds, etc.
). Animals and plants get their food differently : animals eat plants or other animals, while plants get their food from the air and soil with the help of their leaves and roots.
But we know that some plants catch and eat insect.
Also animals can easily move about, whail plants grow in the same place.

Many of them are in danger.

But some people have often hunted tigers for fun and for their beautiful skin.

Many of them are old, sick animals.

We can ask the same question about African elephants.
They are wonderful animals.

But many less dangerous wild animals and birds are also disappearing from the Earth.
Modern life is bad for them.
The air is not fresh.
The water is not clean.
They don't often have good things to eat and space to live.

You can find the names of some fish there too.
People must take special care of them.
We must save wild animals.
We must find the right balance between land, people and animals.

The huge forests help to control the world's weather, and to produce much of the oxygen in the air.
There are many illnesses which we still cannot cure.
There are old ones like cancer2 and new ones like AIDS.
It may be that the medicines we need will be discovered in wild plants in savannas, deserts or rainforests.
If we destroy these places, we will never find the cure.
So you see, that it is not just children who need a healthy space to live and grow.
If we want our lives to be healthy and interesting, a lot of other creatures and plants need growing space too.
