Once upon a time there was an old man who dearly loved his only son.

His son enjoyed riding horses and swimming in the swift waters of mountain rivers, but most of all he liked hunting.

The old man was proud that his son was full of courage but he was afraid of his passion for hunting.

Once in a dream he saw that his son would be killed by a huge lion.

The poor father was afraid that this dream would come true and decided to save his only son.

The man built a nice big house for his son and set in a high place where he could keep his eye on him.

The father didn’t allow the young man to leave the house.

In order to please and entertain his son, the old man put paintings of every kind of animal in one of the rooms.

There was a buffalo, a wolf, an elephant, a rhino and deers in the pictures.

Among them there was a lion.

But looking at all the animals did not distract the young man from his boredom.

One day, he approached the painting and spoke angrily to the lion in it : “You damned beast, it’s because of you and my father’s lying dream that I am kept here in this prison.

I can’t do what I want.

I can neither climb the mountains nor hunt in the forest.

It’s your fault.

What can I do to you?

” And as he said this, he struck his fist against the wall to blind the lion.

But a small sharp piece of wood got under his fingernail and the young man could not get it out.

The old man called for a doctor but the doctor wasn’t able to help his son.

The finger became red and hurt unbearably, it increased to an enormous size.

Soon the young man died of the fierce fever.

The lion, even though it was only a painted one, had indeed killed the young man, just as his father had foreseen.

In a small town lived a wealthy merchant.

He was very kind and charitable.

He had a son, who had unfortunately fallen into a bad company.

Many times the merchant advised his son not to go with the bad company.

But all in vain.

“Please, do not advise me what to do, my father.

I know what is good for me and I know what to do, ” said the son.

One day, a great saint came to the town.

The merchant went to the saint, sought his blessings and said, “My spoilt son is the only cause of my worry.

Please help me.

” After few minutes of contemplation, the saint replied, “Send your son to my Ashram tomorrow morning.

I will talk to him.

” Next morning, the merchant sent his son to the Ashram of the saint.

There the saint asked the son to pluck a flower of rose from the garden of the Ashram.

The son did as asked by the saint.

Then the saint asked the son, ”Smell it and feel its fragrance, my son.

” The boy did so.

Then saint showed the son a sack of wheat said, “Keep the rose near the sack.

” The boy followed the instructions.

After an hour, the saint asked the boy to smell the rose again.

“How does it smell now?

” the saint asked the boy.

The boy smelt the rose and said, “It smells as good as before.

” Then the saint said, “Hmm!

Now keep the rose near this sack of jaggery.

” The boy did so.

After an hour, the saint asked the boy to smell the rose again.

“Is there any change in the fragrance?

” the saint asked the boy.

“No. it smells as fresh as before, ” replied the boy.

Then the saint said, “Boy, you should be like this rose, giving the fragrance to everyone but at the same time not letting the bad smell rub on to you from anyone.

Your good qualities are your strength.

You should not lose them in bad company.

” The boy understood the saint’s words and wisdom.

“I am grateful to you, O Saint, for opening my eyes, ” said the merchant’s son.

From that day onwards, he was honest and charitable like his cultured father.

The Stonecutter Once upon a time there was a stone cutter?

The Stonecutter Once upon a time there was a stone cutter.

The stone cutter lived in a land where a life of privilege meant being powerful.

Looking at his life he decided that he was unsatisfied with the way things were and so he set out to become the most powerful thing in the land.

Looking around his land he wondered to himself what is it to be powerful.

Looking up he saw the Sun shining down on all the land.

«The Sun must be the most powerful thing that there is, for it shines down on all things, and all things grow from it’s touch.

» So he became the Sun.

Days later, as he shone his power down on the inhabitants of the land, there came a cloud which passed beneath him obstructing his brilliance.

Frustrated he realized that the Sun was not the most powerful thing in the land, if a simple cloud could interrupt his greatness.

So he became a cloud, in fact, he became the most powerful storm that the world had ever seen.

And so he blew his rain and lightning, and resounded with thunder all over the land, demonstrating that he was the most powerful.

Until one day he came across a boulder.

Down and down he poured and his thunder roared, lightning flashed and filled the sky, striking the ground near the boulder.

His winds blew and blew and blew, and yet, despite all his efforts, he could not budge the boulder.

Frustrated again, he realized that the storm was not the most powerful thing in the land, rather it must be the boulder.

So he became the boulder.

For days he sat, unmovable, and impassive, demonstrating his power, until one day, a stone cutter came and chiseled him to bits.

The moral of the story is : sometimes the most important thing to remember is that you have everything you need already, right inside of you.

Power is an illusion.
