Destroying the Rainforest Why are people destroying rainforests?
There is a short answer to that question : money.
Countries with rainforests cut down about 50, 000 km2 (square kilometers) of trees every year, and sell the wood to the rich countries of the world.
International business buys rainforests in Latin America where land is very cheap.
They cut down trees, sell the wood, and then use the land for feeding.
Japan doesn't cut down trees, which grow in Japan - but forty percent of all the world's rainforest wood goes to this country.
Switzerland stopped buying rainforest wood in 1982.
But have many countries done the same?
If we want to help the rainforest, we must never buy furniture made of rainforest wood.
Many countries cut down rainforests and plant coffee and sugar, which they can sell to rich countries.
Not many insects and animals can live in coffee and sugar plantations.
A lot of them become endangered and die in the end.
We need to learn more about the trees of the rainforests, before we destroy them.
For example, one famous tree is the petroleum nut tree, from Philippines.
This tree makes oil, which we can use for fires for cooking or lighting.
One of these trees can make fifty litres of oil every year.
People make roads in rainforesrs.
Without the trees to protect the ground, the heavy rain quickly washes away the soil near the roads and nothing can grow there again.
Once in Madagascar there were thousands of trees in the mountains and thousands of animals lived there.
Nothing can grow there now, and no animals can live there.
Are we to destroy all the rainforests of the world?
We must begin thinking of other ways to get money, we should begin planting young trees in the rainforests.
We must think twice before cutting down trees in the rainforests.
Certainly people will use the rainforests but they should protect them too 1) Where does wood from rainforests go?

For thousands of years the Earth has given support to all forms of life – human beings, animals, birds, fishes, insects and plants.
But now human beings are killing our planet.
Many species of animals and birds have disappeared.
Millions of animals die every year because man has polluted their natural homes.
Besides, every year people cut down more trees, build more roads, and use more land for farming.
This leaves fewer jungles, fields and forests for wildlife.
The country air, once clean and fresh, now may be polluted by power stations and factories.
Some of our rivers are now empty of fish.
And in some rivers you can even see a thick foam caused by chemical waste.
All over the words the forests are disappearing.
People cut the trees down because they need wood and paper or new places for farms and houses.
Forests the size of Belgium are destroyed every year.
It’s an international disaster.
Even if new trees are planted, it takes many year for them to grow.
Go to the seaside and you’ll see the pollution around you.
There is a lot of litter on the beaches.
Some of it was left by people and some was brought by the water.
Pollution is very dangerous for people, wildlife and the environment.
We live among litter and wastes which we have created ourselves – fumes of cars, throwaway packaging, etc.
They pollute themselves with cigarettes, alcohol and junk food.
These are some of the world’s most serious environmental problems.
And it’s no good pretending they don’t exist – they do.
What’s more, they are getting worse all the time!
What will happen if we don’t try to solve these problems?
Scientists have made predictions and they are alarming.

Some people are afraid of tigers and kill them to save their domestic animals and their lives.
But some people have often hunted tigers for fun and for their beautiful skin.

The result is very sad.
There are few Indian tigers left on the Earth now.
Many of them are old, sick animals.
Most tigers don't hunt people nowadays, but hide from them in deep, dark forests.
Or they rather hid there earlier, because there aren't many forests for tigers nowadays.

And the question is : "Have those animals got a future?

We can ask the same question about African elephants.
They are wonderful animals.
They can help men.
In the 19th century Africa was full of elephants.
But these days there are not many of them except in African parks.
This is the sad story of Indian tigers and African elephants.
But many less dangerous wild animals and birds are also disappearing from the Earth.
Modern life is bad for them.
The air is not fresh.
The water is not clean.
They don't often have good things to eat and space to live.
You can find their names in the Red Book.
You can find the names of some fish there too.
People must take special care of them.
We must save wild animals.
We must find the right balance between land, people and animals.
We must take care of nature.
