Who doesn’t like holidays?

Holidays usually mean not going to school or to work, they also mean nice food, present and a lot of fun.

Russian people like them too.

Here are some traditional holidays and festivals they celebrate.

1 January – New Year’s Day 14 February – St Valentine’s Day March or April – Easter Festival 7 January – Christmas The beginning of a new year is a time for celebrating and for making a new start.

People wish each other "Happy New Year" and send special greeting card.

On New Year’s Eve (December 31st) many people go to parties with their families, neighbours and friends.

They go to bed after midnight to "see the New Year in” at o’clock.

January 1st is a public holiday in Russia.

For older people it’s a quiet day in front of the television.

But young people go out and meet their friends at parties, discos and different clubs.

On St Valentin’s Day people send a special greeting card (Valentine) to those who they love.

It’s a tradition not to give the name of the sender.

Some people buy presents for their sweetheats or give them red rose, a symbol of love.

Among historic holidays, Guy Fawkes Night can be mentioned.

In the 15 - th century, a group of people with Guy Fawkes as their leader decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

They did not manage to do this and Guy Fawkes was caught and hanged.

Since then the British celebrate this day burning a doll made of straw and dressed in old clothes on a bonfire.

Children dress in old clothes and beg in the street saying : A penny for the Guy.

There are a lot of customs in Great Britain.

One of the most famous is gardening.

Most of the English keep small gardens full of flowers behind their houses or around them.

In spring, there are a lot of flower - shows and vegetable - shows with prizes for the best exhibitions.

In Northern Ireland there is a holiday called St.

Patrick's Day.

It is celebrated on the 17 - th of March.

On this day people wear green clothes and drink Irish beer.

There are carnivals and barbeques all over the country.

In 1620 they came to America and began a new life there.

It was a very hard life.

The colonists started to farm the land.

The work was difficult and full of danger.

In New England, the place where they lived, there were many wild birds.

They were like chickens but much bigger.

They were turkeys.

In the autumn of 1621 the colonists had their first harvest.

It was rather good.

The colonists decided to have a special dinner.

They wanted to thank God — to give him their thanks for many things.

It was a difficult year, but the people still had food to eat.

The colonists had a thanksgiving dinner for all the people.

It lasted three days.

For the whole1 three days they gave thanks for their good harvest and their happy year in a new country.

Wild turkeys were on the table of this meal, and since then the turkey has become a symbol of Thanksgiving Day.
