Red Suqare is situated in the centre of Moscow.

2) What was its first name?

Its first name was Torg, or market place.

3) Why did people call the square "Pozhar"?

They called "Pozhar" because there was a big fire in 1493 there.

4) When did the square get its modern name?

The square got its modern name in the 17th century.

"Krasnaya" meant beautiful.

5) What can people see in Red Square?

People can see the famous buildings and monuments : St Basil's Cathedral, The History Museum, Spasskaya Tower and others.

TEXT RED SQUARE 1.

Red Square is a symbol and the heart of Moscow.

It is a favourite place in the capital not only for visitors but for the Moscovities too.

Red Square reflects the whole history of Russia.

2. In ancient Russia Red Square represented the wooden buildings and it was the trade place.

Just in 17 century this place became known as the Red, which means beautiful.

At present days Red Square in Moscow is not only trade but also a political center.

3. Red Square has always been a crowded place.

And construction of it was done as to prove its name – beautiful.

In 1588 there was built the church which called St.

Vasil’s Cathedral, but it was rebuilt in 17th century.

Now we see the church as one of nine churches on the ground.

This is one of the main attractions of the capital.

5. In 1889 - 1893 there was constructed the building which is known as GUM – top shopping streets, designed by A.

Pomerantsev.

6. After the 1917 revolution name of the area associated with the victory of the “red” and the Red Square and the Kremlin have become symbols of the revolution.

After the death of Lenin in 1924 was built a mausoleum.

First it was wooden and later it became marble.

These years the monument to Minin and Pozharsky was postponed.

7. In 1990 the complex of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square were included in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

Red Square is open for tourists around the clock.

In some cases it may be closed during the preparation for the big holidays, such as Victory Parade.

8. In recent years near the GUM there is a rink.

Its size reaches 3 million square meters and it holds up to 500 people.

And of course many people prefer to celebrate the main holiday – the New Year – exactly on the Red Square.
