There are very many places of interest : the Houses of Parliament , the Tower, St.

Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, the British Museum .

The Houses of Parliament is the place where the English Government and Parliament sit.

The Tower of London was a fortress, a palace and a prison many years ago.

Now it’s a museum.

Trafalgar Square is named is memory of Nelson’s great victory.

In the middle of the square stands the famous Nelson Column with a statue of Nelson on the top of it.

Piccadilly Circus with its famous central fountain on the top of which stands a statue of Eros, the Greek god of love, is the heart of the West End.

The British Museum is really a history museum.

It is one of the most famous museum of the world.

In Westminster Abbey English kings and queens are crowned and many famous men are buried there : Charles Dickens, Kipling, Shakespeare, Burns, Byron, Scott and other.

Buckingham Palace is know all over the world to be the home of Britain’s Kings and queens.

The House was bought by George III in 1762 from the Duke of Buckingham, from whom it takes its name.

Queen Victoria was the first to make the Palace her official residence.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is the masterpiece of the well – known English architect Christopher Wren.

London is the capital of Great Britain.

London is a very old town.

London is two thousand years old.

Many years ago London was a small town on the Thames.

There were a lot of villages round it.

After many years London and three hundred villages grew into a very large city.

Some of the names of those villages are the names of the streets in modern London - Kensington, Westminster.

Now London is a beautiful city with large squares and parks.

The city of London is the business centre.

East End includes the poor districts.

West of London is the West End where rich people live.

Trafalgar Square is in the centre of the West End of London.

In the centre of Trafalgar Square there is the column made of granite.

On the top of the column there is al statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1809.

The total high of the monument is 184 feet (44 meters).

On the North side of Trafalgar Square there is the National Gallery.

The National Gallery has one of the finest collections of pictures in the world.

Trafalgar Square is one of the busiest places in London.

There are lots of tourists in the square all day long.

Traditionally it is divided into several parts : the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.

They are very different from each other and seem to belong to different towns and epochs.

The heart of London is the City, its financial and business center.

Numerous banks, officers and firms are situated there, including the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange and the Old Bailey.

Few people live here, but over a million people come to the City to work.

There are some famous ancient buildings within the City.

Perhaps the most striking of them is St Paul’s Cathedral, the greatest of English churches.

It was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren.

The Tower of London was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1066 rebuilt by William the Conqueror.

It was used as a fortress, a royal palace and a prison.

Now it is a museum.

Westminster is the historic, the governmental part of London.

Westminster Abbey has more historic associations than any other building in Britain.

Nearly all English kings and queens have been crowned here.

Many outstanding statesmen, scientists, writers, poets and painters are buried here : Newton, Darwin, Chaucer, Dickens, Tennyson, Kipling, etc.
