He boys al Ihe workhouse ate in a large stone hall?

He boys al Ihe workhouse ate in a large stone hall.

At one end there was a copper, out of which the master ladled gruel at mealtimes.

Each boy had only one ladleful and no more, except on public holidays when he had two ounces and a quarter of bread.

The bowls never needed washing as the boys polished them with their spoons until they shone.

When they had done this, they would sit staring at the copper with such eager eyes as if they could easily eat the very bricks of which it was made.

Meanwhile, they licked their fingers trying to catch any stray splashes of gruel.

Generally, boys have excellent appetites and so Oliver and his companions suffered from slow starvation for three months.

They finally got so wild with hunger that one boy.

Who was somewhat tall for his age and not at all used to that sort of thing because his lather had owned a small bakery, said to his companions that ип1еяч he had another spoon of gruel daily, he was afraid that one night he might eat the boy who slept next to him.

He seemed to have a wild, hungry look in his eye and the others entirely believed him.

A meeting was held and lots were drawn to see who should walk up to the master after supper that evening and ask for more.

The task fell to Oliver Twist.

The evening arrived and the boys took their places.

The master, in his cook's apron, stood beside the copper with his assistants behind him.

The gruel was served out and a long grace was said.

After the gruel disappeared, the boys whispered to each other and winked at Oliver, while his neighbours nudged him.

Oliver was desperate with hunger and misery.

He rose from the table and, walking towards the master with his howl, said,

'Please, sir, I want some more.

'

The master was a fat, healthy man but he turned very pale.

He gazed in astonishment at the boy for some seconds and then held on to the copper for support.

His assistants were paralysed with wonder and the boys with fear.

'What?

' said the master eventually in a faint voice.

'Please, sir, ' replied Oliver, 'I want some more.

'

The master hit Oliver's head with the ladle, held him tightly in his arms and shrieked aloud for the policeman.

What did the dog do when he was excited?

Вот текст.

Once upon a time, a little hungry dog.

He had no home, no name, and very often no food.

He would hunt around dustbins, and eat the most surprising things - like plum stones and paper bags, but he never had a pain .

. for really he was a very special dog.

When people were having meals, he walked around the houses with a hungry look, and the kind people nearly always gave him something to eat.

Sometimes the little dog felt very excited, and for no reason at all he would rush over the fences and knock over everything that came in his way.

People thought the dog was mad, but he was not mad, he was just a very special sort of dog.

One day a gentleman watched these strange goings on with surprise.

Then he, too, jumped in the air and danced for joy - for he had an idea.

"This dog would be just right for the films, " he said.

"He is JUST what I have been looking for.

"

As the dog looked hungry, the film director took him to the butchers.

So the little hungry dog was hungry no more.

He had plenty of food, a good home, and his master was the kindest man any dog could have.

The little dog was a born actor and his antics on the screen made everyone clap their hands and laugh until their sides ached.

Of course, he made a lot of money for his master, and more did he have to search in dustbins for his food.

He could choose just what he fancied for dinner, go out when he liked, and stay in bed late in the mornings.

The little black dog was very pleased with himself.

"Woof!

Woof!

I am not a hungry little dog now - I AM A FILM STAR!

".

ALI BABA AND FORTY THIEVES

Ali Baba was such a poor man that he had only one shoe for his two feet.

Even mice in his house were hungry.

One day his wife said, “We have no food in the house.

No rice.

No potatoes.

Go and collect leaves in the forest so that I can make a soup.

Ali was a lazy man.

He looked for leaves for about ten minutes and then he climbed a tree to sleep.

He was afraid of wolves.

When he woke up he was surprised to see forty thieves on forty horses.

They stopped in front of the big rock.

“Open, Sesame!

” shouted the leader.

A door in the rock opened.

The thieves carried sacks full of gold into the cave.

When they had finished, the leader shouted, “Close, Sesame!

” and the door closed.

As soon as the thieves had disappeared, Ali Baba jumped down from the tree and said, “Open, Sesame” and went into the cave.

There were shelves all around the walls.

The shelves were full of sacks.

The sacks were full of gold.

Ali took a sack home with him.

One of the thieves saw Ali’s footprints on the sand.

He followed them to Ali’s home.

He took out his knife and made a cross on the door.

“Now I shall know which house it is”, he said.

He rode off to get the other thieves.

But Ali had seen the thief.

He and his wife took the brooms and swept away the footprints.

Then he made crosses on every door in the street.

When the forty thieves arrived they had their knives between their teeth.

But they never found Ali – or the gold.

And Ali and his wife lived happily ever after.

1) What did the thief carve on the door?

2) Who took brooms and swept away the footprints?

3) What did forty thieves have between their teeth?

4) Whom did the thieves never find?
