Another big mountain chain is the Appalachians inthe east also running from north to south.

The Grand Canyon is one of America’s maintourist attractions.

It is so big that you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years.

They like to visit historic houses andmuseums.

They build old pioneer houses and remember the days of the “Wild West”.

Americans are interested in old traditions, but they are good at making new traditions too.

The people of the United States are a mixture of many different nationalities.

Every American schoolchild learns that the United States is a big melting potof countries.

In one city you can find people whose parents, grandparents or great - grandparents came from China, Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and everyEuropean country.

These different people brought to their new land a wonderful mixture ofcustoms and traditions.

The Germans brought Christmas trees.

The Irish brought St.

(3) The main part of the United States consists of several physical divisions', including highland and lowland regions.

Major highlands are the Appalachian [.

The Rocky Mountains extend from Mexico to Canada.

The mountains are crossed by streams which flow through deep canyons and fall into the Pacific Ocean.

The largest among them are the Colorado LkDla'raidao] and the Columbia rivers.

These rivers are unsuitable for navigation, but they serve as an immense source of electric power.

The central lowland between the two main mountain ranges makes up the basin2 of the Mississippi [.

Misi'si pi] River.

Its main tributaries are the Missouri [mi'soari] and the Ohio [ao'haiao] Rivers.

The Mississippi together with the Missouri form the longest river in the world (7, 300 km).

The northern part of the USA embraces the region of the five Great Lakes (Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario), which are connected by natural channels cut by rapids1.

The greatest of these rapids is the Niagara Falls.

(4) Crossed by mountain ranges from north to south, the country is unprotected from cold winds from the north and from warm winds from the south.

This causes great temperature fluctuations2.

On the whole, the USA has a continental climate.

In one city you can find people whose parents or great - grandparents came from China, Africa, South America, Southeast Asia ['eija] and many European countries.

These different people brought a wonderful mixture of customs and traditions to their new land.

The German brought Christmas trees, the Irish — St.

(7) The red - white - and - blue flag of the United States is known as 'Old Glory' or the 'Stars and Stripes'5.

Red stands for courage, white for purity6 and blue for justice7.

13 stripes represent the first original American colonies, which were united into one country.

The current shape of the North American continent (the present - day territory of the United States of America and Canada) was formed 25, 000 years ago.

At that time the great northern icecap flowed over the North American continent.

This ice flow determined the size and drainage of the Great Lakes.

They changed the direction of the Missouri River and carved the channel of the Hudson River.

They created the northern part of the Central Agricultural Basin, which is one of the richest farming areas in the world.

On the Atlantic shore of the United States, much of the northern coast is rocky.

But the middle and southern Atlantic coasts rise gently from the sea.

The Appalachians, which run almost parallel to the east coast, are old mountains with many coal rich valleys between them To the west of the Appalachians, lie plateaus built up over the centuries from bits of stone that were washed down from the mountains and then cut into small hills by streams.

Beyond is the great Central Lowland which resembles the plains of Eastern Europe.

North of the Central Lowland, extending for almost 1, 600 kilometers, are the five Great Lakes, which the United States shares with Canada.

The lakes are considered to contain about half of the world's fresh water.

West of the Central Lowland are the Great Plains.

They are stopped by the Rocky Mountains.

The Rockies are young mountains.

They are the same age as the Alps in Europe.

The land of the Rockies is made up of quite distinct and separate regions that are shaped by different geological events.

One region was formed of material, which was washed down from the Rockies and pressed into rock.

This now encompasses the high Colorado Plateaus, where the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is cut (1.

6 km in depth).

The Mississippi flows over 6, 400 km from its northern sources in the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf Mexico.

This makes it one of the world's longest waterways.

Another region, the high Columbia table land to the north was created by lava that poured from inside the earth and buried old mountains.

Volcanoes also built the Cascade Mountains.

The Sierra Nevada range and the ridges of the Great Basin were formed by a strained portion of the earth's crust.

At the border of the Pacific Ocean lie the Coast Ranges.

They are relatively low mountains, because they are in the region where occasional earthquakes from time to time build new mountains.
