Greenhouse effect is the term for the role the atmosphere in warming the earth’s surface.

The atmosphere is largely transparent to incoming short - wave solar radiation, which heats the earth’s surface.

Much of this radiation is reflected back by gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone in the atmosphere.

This heating effect is at the root of the theories concerning global warming.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been increasing by 0.

4 per cent a year because of the use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal.

The cutting of tropical forests has also been a contributing factor in the carbon cycle.

Other gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect, such as methane and halocarbons, are increasing even faster.

The net effect of these increases could be a worldwide rise in temperature, estimated at 2˚ to 6˚ C (4˚ to 11˚ F) over the next 100 years.

Warming of this magnitude would alter climates throughout the world, affect crop production, and cause sea levels to rise significantly.

If this happened, millions of people would be badly affected by flooding.

MAN AND NATURAL WORLD.

1. Animportant environmental problem in the atmosphere is the greenhouse effect.

Some gases in the atmosphere work like glass in a greenhouse.

They are known as "greenhouse gases".

Theylet heat in, but they don't let much hea out.

So the atmosphere becomes warmer.

The greenhouseeffect is very important ; if it did not occur at all, the temperature of the plenet would be 40 degrees lower and the oceans would freeeze.

But an increase in the greenhouse effect ( caused bt an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere ) may lead to global warming.

2. We tend to imagine that ancient people were " environmentally friendly " and lived in harmony with nature.

Some people (such as the American Indians) did indeed respect and protect their environment.

But there are many examples of ancient people who destroyed the land they lived on.

The great city of Ur was destroyed by floods after its people removed the trees on the banks of the river Euphrates to use as fuel for their fires.

Although the Bible says that the cause of floods was the anger of God, the real cause of the flood was probably environmental damage by man.

If you to know what the weather's going to be like this weekend, ask a weather - man.

If you want to know what it'll be like in 100 years, ask a scientist.

The most important influence on the weather of the future is likely to be global warming.

Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the next century.

Here's what we know about global warming.

Since the Industrial Age(say, 1800), the concentration of the so - called "green - house gases" - carbon dioxide, methane and others - in the atmosphere has risen about 30 per cent.

In the past century temperatures have increased 1 degree Fahrenheit.

One opinion is that these tendencies are connected.

Industrial and transportation emissions increased carbone dioxide, trapping more heat in the atmosphere and raising temperatures.

Another opinion is that the small temperature rise is a natural climatic variation.

The next hundred years, most scientists agree, will see the earth heat up further.

We don't know what the effects of warming might be.

Warmer weather might make some areas more attractive and others less.

We don't know how to prevent warming.

Stabilizing emissions isn't enough.

No one knows how to lower emissions without crushing the world economy.

Based on present knowledge, the best way of coping with warming - if it happens - would be to adapt to it.

Перевод пж, только не гугловский, а нормальныйHuman activity is changing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?

Перевод пж, только не гугловский, а нормальный

Human activity is changing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

As cities have grown in size and population, people have needed more and more electricity, cars and products of all kinds.

As industries have grown, more greenhouse gases have been produced by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas.

The increases in these gases make greenhouse 'glass' thicker, causing more heat to be held in the atmosphere than in the past.

It doesn't seem like much, but a slight warming could cause changes in the climate of many regions.

If the climate changed enough, the plants and animals that normally live there could no longer survive.

Some scientists think that the world is becomming hotter.

If you compare Moscow winter and summer temperatures at the beginning of our century and at its end you will see that climate has really changed.

Winters have become warmer.

Sometimes there is little snow in January, and there were winters when it rained on the New Year's Eve.

Many people say that it is so because of the greenhouse effect.

During the last 100 years people have produced a lot of carbon dioxide.

This gas in the atmosphere works like glass in a greenhouse.

It lets heat get in, but it doesn't let much heat get out.

So the atmosphere becomes warmer.

Where does the carbon dioxide come from?

People and animals breathe in oxygen, and breathe out carbon dioxide.

We produce carbon dioxide when we burn things.

Trees take this gas from the air, and produce oxygen.

But in the last few years, people have cut down and burn big areas of rainforest.

This means there are fewer trees, and, of course, more carbon dioxide!

As we see the climate in different parts of the world changes a little from year to year.

These changes can be dangerous for our planet, which needs protection.

Earth is millions of years old, much older than the humans.

We know many of its secrets.

Yet there is still much to learn.

Now scientists are more or less sure about the greenhouse effect which makes the Earth warmed by trapping energy in the atmosphere because certain gases (carbon dioxide, methane and some others) prevent heat from escaping into space.

Look at the pictures and say how people increase the amount of such gases in the atmosphere.

Add some more examples to illustrate your answer.

Climate has a very important impact on plants, animals and humans and is different in different parts of the world.

Russia is the biggest country in the world.

It is located in the vast territory from the Pacific coast to the heart of Europe, and its climate in the north, south, east and west are different.

In the West, for example, the climate is generally mild and humid.

At the same time, the coldest place on the planet is in the north of Siberia, while in the south of Russia, a lot of sunlight and summer heat can be really horrible.

Summer and winter temperatures are different in Moscow, Omsk and Krasnoyarsk, Volgograd and Rostov.

In the Arctic winter temperature is low enough.

In the taiga zone of long, cold winters and short summers.

Very hot in the summer between the Black and Caspian seas.

But recently, the climate in our country has changed dramatically, especially in its European part.

Some scientists believe that the world is getting hotter.

If you compare Moscow summer and winter temperatures in the beginning of the century and at the end, you will find that the temperature is actually changed.

Winters are warmer.

Sometimes in January falls a little snow, and the winter was, when there was rain (not snow!

) On the eve of the New Year.

Many people say that this is due to the greenhouse effect.

Have you ever heard of this?

It happens like this : sunlight gives us warmth.

Some of the heat warms the atmosphere, some of the heat is returned back into space.

In our days, the air surrounding the earth, has become much warmer due to the fact that heat can not go back into space.

That is why winter and summer temperatures in many places have become higher.

During the last hundred years, people have made a lot of carbon dioxide.

The gas in the atmosphere acts as a glass greenhouse.

He admits heat, but does not allow a lot of heat escape.

So that the atmosphere is getting warmer.

Whence comes the carbon dioxide?

Humans and animals inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.

We produce carbon dioxide when we burn things.

Trees absorb dioxide from the air and produce oxygen, but in the last five years, people have cut down and burned a large number of tropical forests.

This means that little remains of trees and, of course, a lot of carbon dioxide!

. As we can see, the climate in different parts of the world is slowly changing from year to year.

These changes can be dangerous for our fragile planet that needs to be protected.

Earth millions of years, much older than people.

We know a lot of her secrets.

But many have yet to discover.
