They were not railway children to begin with.

I don't suppose they had ever thought about railways except as a means of getting to the pantomime, Zoological Gardens and Madame Tussauds.

They were just ordinary suburban children, and they lived with their father and mother in an ordinary red - brick - fronted villa, with coloured glass in the front door, a tiled passage that was called a hall, a bathroom with not and cold water, electric bells, French windows, a good deal of white paint, and every modern convenience, as the estate agents say.

There were three of them.

Roberta was the eldest.

Of course, mothers never have favourites, but if their mother had had a favourite, it might have been Roberta.

Next came Peter, who wished to be an engineer when he grew up ; and the youngest was Phyllis, who meant extremely well.

Mother did not spend all her time paying dull calls to dull ladies, and sitting dully at home waiting for dull ladies to pay calls to her.

She was almost always there, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them to do their home lessons.

Besides this, she used to write stories for them while they were at school, and read them aloud after tea, and she always made up funny pieces of poetry for their birthdays and for other great occasions, such as the refurnishing of the doll's house, or the time when they were getting over the mumps.

These three lucky children always had everything they needed : pretty clothes, a lovely nursery with heaps of toys and a Mother Goose wallpaper.

They had a kind and merry nursemaid, and a dog who was called James, and who was their very own.

They also had a father who was just perfect - never cross, never unjust, and always ready for a game - at least, if at any time he was not ready, he always had an excellent reason for it, and explained the reason to the children so interestingly and funnily that they felt sure he had to do it.

You will think that they ought to have been very happy.

And so they were, but they did not know how happy till the pretty life in the Red Villa was over and done with, and they had to live a very different life indeed.

The dreadful change came quite suddenly.

Peter had a birthday - his tenth.

Among his presents was a model engine more perfect than you could ever have dreamed of.

The other presents were full of charm, but the engine was fuller of charm than any of the others were.

Its charm lasted in its full perfection for exactly three days.

Then, owing either to Peter's inexperience or Phyllis's good intention, or to some other cause, the engine suddenly went off with a bang.

James was so fightened that he went out and did not come back all day.

All the Noah's Ark people who were in the tender were broken to bits, but nothing else was hurt except the poor little engine and the feelings of Peter.

The others said he cried over it - but of course boys of ten do not cry, however terrible the tragedies may be which darken their lot.

He said that his eyes were red because he had a cold.

This turned out to be true, though Peter did not know it was when he said it, the next day he had to go to bed and stay there.

Just after the Christmas two years ago, Jack and Liza decided to go away for New Year.

They didn’t want to stay in a hotel with crowds of people and they were delighted when they saw an advertisement in the Sunday Times f or a holiday flat in a village near Oxford.

It was no ordinary flat.

It was on the top floor of an old Tudor mansion.

They booked it and on New Year’s Eve they set off in the car.

It was raining and freezing cold.

They were happy and excited.

They had been driving for three hours when they saw the house in the distance.

It looked magnificent with tall chimneys and a long, wide drive.

They drove up to the huge front door, went up the steps, and knocked.

Nothing happened.

They knocked again.

The door opened and a small, wild - looking old lady stood there.

She was so thin and bent, she had long, straggly grey hair, and dirty old torn clothes.

She asked them to come in and they followed her.

The house was so old and dark and dirty.

There were cats ev erywhere.

In the rooms all the furniture was broken and there were no curtains.

There was no heating and there was only one power point.

So you could either have the television, or the lamp, but you couldn’t have more than one.

So what did they do?

They ju st ran!

When they got outside again the rain had turned to snow.

They ran to the car hysterically laughing.

They drove to the next village and as midnight was striking, they found a hotel with a room for the night.

“Happy New Year!

” cried Jack, as he kisse d the surprised receptionist on both cheeks.

“You have no idea how beautiful your hotel is!

It was in 1620, in the time of King James the First?

It was in 1620, in the time of King James the First.

English people did not like their king and they called him 'The Foolish King of England'.

Many of them even left England and went to live in other countries.

In November, 1620, a small ship, the Mayflower, left England.

There were about one hundred people aboard the ship, but even for this hundred the ship was too small.

For seven long weeks the Mayflower was in the waves and storms of the Atlantic Ocean, and at last the people saw land.

It was America.

It was already autumn.

It was raining and a cold wind was blowing.

Sixteen men left the Mayflower and went ashore.

In the evening they came back to the ship and brought some maize with them.

They found the maize in the sand on the beach where the Indians had left it.

Nobody in Europe had seen maize then, but when the people on board the Mayflower tried it they liked it very much.

Next day was Sunday and everybody on the Mayflower had a rest.

On Monday some men went ashore again and this time they took some women with them.

The women had to wash the clothes.

Since that time Monday has been a wash - day in America.

In France, there was a man who had a dog and a cat and he loved them both.

One day he got a new job 200 kilometers away so he had to move.

But he only took the dog with him and left the cat in the same house with new owners.

Three weeks later, the dog came back - together with the cat.

They were tired and hungry after their long way, and the cat's paws were bleeding.

But they looked happy and lived on all together.

The Darling family lived in London?

The Darling family lived in London.

Mr Darling was a strict and serious man, but he loved his children very much.

His wife was loving and sweet.

There were three Darling children.

Wendy was the oldest, then there was John, and last of all, there was Michael.

The Darlings were not rich, but they wanted a nanny for their children.

Luckily, they found Nana.

Nana was perfect in every way.

She loved the children and looked after them carefully.

However, people stopped to stare when they saw the three children with their nanny.

You see, Nana was a large yellow dog that the Darlings met in the park.

Mr Darling worried that his neighbours might think she was strange, but Nana was the best nanny in London.

She kept the children safe and she made them very happy.

In fact, the Darling family was the happiest family in London until Peter Pan came.

The Darling children often dreamed of the magical land called the Neverland.

They saw the strange land with its lagoons, caves and forests.

The Neverland was different for each of the children.

John lived in a boat turned upside down on the sand.

Michael lived in a wigwam, while Wendy lived in a house made of leaves sewn together.

They all dreamed of Peter, however, especially Wendy.

She knew that Peter often came to the children's room at night while they were asleep.

When she told her mother about this, Mrs Darling did not believe her.
