Aesop lived many hundred years ago in Greece.

He was a very clever man.

He wrote stories and fables, which are well - know all over the world.

He liked to tell jokes and people liked them.

One day, when he was walking alng the road, he met a traveller.

The traveller greeted Aesop and asked him : "Kind man, please, tell me, how soon shall I get to town?

" "Walk, " Aesop answered.

"I know that I must walk, "protested the traveller, "but I want to knw how soon I shall get to town.

"Walk, " Aesop said again angrili.

"The man is mad, "thought the traveller and went on.

In some moments Aesop shouted after him : "You will get to twn in tw house.

The traveller turned round and asked : "Why did not you say that before?

" "Because I did nt know hw fast you walk, " answered Aesop.

A puzze when l eat l live, but when l drink, l die.

He also got over the wall and came up to the grave.

The nervous man stood up and asked : "What do you want of me!

Why are you following me?

""I say, " answered the other man, "do you always go home like this?

Or are you having some special sort of sport exercices to - night?

I'm going to Mr.

One dark night a young man was going home from the railway station.

It was very late and there were very few people in the streets.

The young man was very nervous because he had never return home so late.

Suddenly he felt that somebody was following him.

The young man thought that it was a robber and decided to walk as quickly as he could .

When he (looked back he (saw that the man was still following him.

The young man (turned into another street.

The man (turned into that street too.

Now the young man was quite sure that the man was a robber.

The young man (turned round and (asked : "What do you want ?

Why are you following me?

" "I am going to see Mr Brown, " (said the man, "and the porter at the station (told me : 'If you follow this young man, you wll find his house easily, he lives next door to Mr Brown.

Mark Twain , the famous American writer, was well - known as a lecturer.

Literary clubs often invited him to speak.

Before one of his lectures a club member came to him and said :

Twain, people say that you can tell very funny stories.

I hope that during your lecture you will tell a story that will make my uncle laugh.

He hasnt laughed for ten years.

Ill do my best.

Mark Twain said.

When he began his lecture, Mark Twain noticed the club member.

He was sitting in front of him with an old man who had a very sad face.

Mark Twain began to tell jokes , one after another.

I told long jokes and short jokes, new jokes and old jokes, Mark Twain told his friends.

I told every joke l knew and soon everybody was laughing .

Everybody - but not the old man.

He was looking at me with cold, blue eyes.

I couldnt make him laugh , and Itried again and again.
