On a beautiful afternoon in a year now long gone, a big ship set out on its first voyage from England to america.
It was a new ship called the Titanic.
For two days the Titanic went on its way over the sea.
Them it entered an ice field and big iceberg hit it.
Everyone came out of their rooms.
Men were putting the life boats over the sides of the ship down into the water.
Then all the men helped the women and children get into the life boats.
There wasn't very much time left.
The iceberg was on one side of the ship.
It was like a high white wall.
A woman came to the side of the schip.
Her two children were in one of the life boats and she was very much afraid.
''My children are on the life boat.
I must go with them, ''the woman called to the people in the life boat.
''There's no more room, ''someone called out.
''If we take one more the life boat will sink.
''There was a young woman in the life boat called Miss Evans.
When she heard the woman calling, she stood up on the life boat and touched one of the men on the arm.
''Let me get back on the ship, '' she said.
''Let that woman take my place.
I have no children.
''The ship is sinking, ''said the man.
''You know that?
'' ''Yes, '' said Miss Evans.

'' There was no time to talk.
People helped Miss Evans get back onto the ship.
Very soon after that there was a great noise and the Titanic wend down under the water .

For seven long weeks the Mayflower was in the waves and storms of the Atlantic Ocean, and at last the people saw land.
It was America.
It was already autumn.
It was raining and a cold wind was blowing.
Sixteen men left the Mayflower and went ashore.
In the evening they came back to the ship and brought some maize with them.
They found the maize in the sand on the beach where the Indians had left it.
Nobody in Europe had seen maize then, but when the people on board the Mayflower tried it they liked it very much.
Next day was Sunday and everybody on the Mayflower had a rest.
On Monday some men went ashore again and this time they took some women with them.
The women had to wash the clothes.
Since that time Monday has been a wash - day in America.

A woman came to the side of the ship.
Her two children were in one of the lifeboats, and she was very much afraid.
"My children are in the lifeboat.
I must go with them!
" the woman called to the people in the lifeboat.
"There's no more room, " someone called out.

"This woman must be with her children.
