The usual British meals are breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner and supper.

Traditional breakfast is a very big meal - sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.

But nowadays many people just have cereal with milk and sugar, or toast with marmalade, jam, or honey.

Marmalade and jam are not the same!

Marmalade is made from oranges and jam is made from other fruit.

The traditional breakfast drink is tea, which people have with cold milk.

Some people have coffee, often instant coffee, which is made with just hot water.

Many visitors to Britain find this coffee disgusting!

For many people lunch is a quick meal.

In cities there are a lot of bars, where office workers can choose the kind of bread, they want - brown, white, or a roll - and then all sorts of salad and meat or fish to go in the sandwich.

Pubs often serve good, cheap food, both hot and cold.

Schoolchildren can have a hot meal at school, but many just take a snack from home - a sandwich, a drink, some fruit, and perhaps some crisps.

Afternoon tea means two things.

It is a drink and a meal!

Some people have afternoon tea with sandwiches or cakes.

Cream teas are very popular.

You may also have scones (a kind of cake) with cream and jam.

The evening meal is the main meal of the day for many people.

They usually have it quite early, between 6 and 8 pm, and often the whole family eats together.

On Sundays many families have a traditional lunch They have roast meat, either beef, lamb, chicken, or pork with potatoes and gravy.

Gravy is a sauce made from the meat juices.

The British like food from other countries, too, especially Italian, French, Chinese, and Indian.

People often get takeaway meals - you buy the food at the restaurant and then bring it home to eat.

Eating in Britain is quite international.

The usual meals in England are breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner or, in simpler houses, breakfast, dinner, tea and supper.

For breakfast English people mostly have porridge or corn - flakes with milk or cream and sugar, bacon and eggs, marmalade with buttered toast and tea or coffee.

For a change they can have a boiled egg, cold ham, or fish.

English people generally have lunch about one o’clock.

At lunch time in a London restaurant one usually finds a mutton chop, or steak and chips, or cold meat or fish with potatoes and salad, then a pudding or fruit to follow.

Afternoon tea can hardly be called a meal.

It is a substantial meal only in well - to - do families.

It is between five and six o’clock.

It is rather a sociable sort of thing, as friends often come in then for a chat while they have their cup of tea, cake or biscuit.

In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day.

But in great many English homes, the midday meal is the chief one of the day, and in the evening there is usually a much simpler supper — an omelette, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs and sometimes just bread and cheese, a cup of coffee or cocoa and fruit.

There are four meals a day in an English home : breakfast, lunch, tea, and dinner.

Breakfast is the first meal of the day.

It is at about 8 o'clock in the morning, and consists of porridge with milk and salt or sugar, eggs — boiled or fried, bread and butter with marmalade or jam.

Some people like to drink tea, but others prefer coffee.

Instead of porridge they may have fruit juice, or they may prefer biscuits.

The usual time for lunch is 1 o'clock.

This meal starts with soup or fruit juice.

Then follows some meat or poultry with potatoes — boiled or fried, carrots and beans.

Then a pudding comes.

Instead of the pudding they may prefer cheese and biscuits.

Last of all coffee — black or white.

Englishmen often drink something at lunch.

Water is usually on the table.

Some prefer juice or lemonade.

Tea is the third meal of the day.

It is between 4 or 5 o'clock, the so - called 5 o'clock tea.

On the table there is tea, milk or cream, sugar, bread and butter, cakes and jam.

Friends and visitors are often present at tea.

Dinner is the fourth meal of the day.

The usual time is about 7 o'clock, and all the members of the family sit down together.

Dinner usually consists of soup, fish or meat with vegetables — potatoes, green beans, carrot and cabbage, sweet pudding, fruit salad, ice - cream or cheese and biscuits.

Then after a talk they have black or white coffee.

This is the order of meals among English families, But the greater part of the people in the towns, and nearly all country - people, have dinner in the middle of the day instead of lunch.

They have tea a little later — between 5 and 6 o'clock, and then in the evening, before going to bed, they have supper.

So the four meals of the day are either breakfast, dinner, tea, supper ; or breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner.
