During summer vacations, I would volunteer at the vet's, so I'd seen a lot of dogs.

Minnie was by far funniest - looking dog I'd ever seen.

Thin curly hair barely covered her sausage - shaped body.

Her bugged - out eyes always seemed surprised.

And her tail looked like a rat's tail.

She was brought to the vet to be put to sleep because her owners didn't want her anymore.

I thought Minnie had a sweet personality, though.

No one should judge her by her looks, I thought.

So the vet spayed her and gave the necessary shots.

Finally, I advertised Minnie in the local paper : "Fanny - looking dog, well behaved, needs loving family".

When a young man called, I warned him that Minnie was strange looking.

The boy on the phone told me that his grandfather's sixteen - year - old dog had gust died.

They wanted Minnie no matter what.

I gave Minnie a good bath and fluffed up what was left of her scraggly hair.

Then we waited for them to arrive.

At last an old car drove up in front of the vet's.

Two kids raced to door.

They scooped Minnie into their arms and rushed her out their grandfather, who was waiting in the car.

I hurried behind them to see his reaction to Minnie.

Inside the car, the grandfather cradled Minnie in his arms and stroked her soft hair.

She licked his face.

Her rat - tail wagged around so quickly that it looked like it might fly off her body.

It was love at first lick.

"She's perfect!

"the old man exclaimed.

I was thankful that Minnie had found the good home that she deserved.

That's when I saw that the grandfather's eyes were a milky white color - he was blind.

Susie felt it impossible to stay in the deserted studio any longer, and accepted a friend’s invitation to spend the winter in Italy.

Margaret had not written to her, and she could not make herself write to her.

In Rome Susie had news of Oliver Haddo and his wife.

They had spent some time there, and the little English circle was still talking of their eccentricities.

Oliver Haddo had excited attention by the extravagance of his costume and manner ; and Margaret by her beauty.

She was seen in her box at the opera every night, and her diamonds were the envy of all women.

But suddenly the pair had disappeared without saying a word to anybody.

It was reported that they were now in Monte Carlo.

Susie had intended to pass the spring on the Riviera, but when she heard that the Haddos were there, she hesitated.

She did not want to run the risk of seeing them, and yet she had a strong desire to find out exactly how things were going.

At last curiosity won and she went to Monte Carlo.

After two or three days she saw them at the tables, but they were so absorbed in their game that they did not notice her.

Margaret was playing, but Haddo stood behind her and directed her movements.

Susie was unable to recognize in her the girl who had been her friend.

What struck her most was that there was in Margaret’s expression an extraordinary likeness to Haddo’s.

In spite of her beauty, she had Oliver’s evil look which suggested that she saw with his eyes.

They had won great sums that evening.

Taking up the money, Haddo touched her on the shoulder, and she followed him.

Susie learned that the Haddos had rooms at the most expensive of the hotels.

They knew few English except those who had bad reputations, but seemed to prefer the society of those foreigners whose wealth and eccentricities made them the centre of that little world.

Margaret moved among all those odd people with a cold mysteriousness that excited everybody’s curiosity.

Oliver’s eccentric imagination invented whimsical festivities and orgies that were held in the dark sitting - room of the hotel.

He wanted to revive the mystical ceremonies of old religions imitating those he had seen in Eastern places.

No one understood his true relations with his wife, and it was said that he was sometimes very cruel to her.

Susie’s heart sank when she heard this ; but several times when she saw Margaret, she seemed in the highest spirits.

Then the same thing that had happened in Rome happened here again ; they suddenly disappeared.

Susie had not been to London for some time, and as the spring advanced she remembered that her friends had invited her.

Though she would not confess it to herself, her desire to see Arthur was the strongest of her motives.

She knew that he would never care for her, but she was glad to be his friend.

In London she wrote to Arthur, and he invited her to the opera.

Susie was terrified at the change that had taken place in him.

He looked ten years older, he had lost weight, and his hair was white.

But what most struck her was the change of his expression.

The look of pain which she had seen on his face that last evening in the studio has now become settled, so that it changed its countenance.

He was more silent than ever, and when he spoke, it was a strange low voice that seemed to come from a long way off.

Too Well (After O’Henry) Miss Carington was a famous actress.

She began her life in a small village named Cranberry.

But that was long ago.

Now she was to perform the leading part in a new comedy.

A capable young actor Highsmith by name dreamt of being Miss Carington’s partner in the new play.

He told it to the manager.

The manager explained to the young actor that if he wanted to play the part he must persuade Miss Carington to accept him as a partner.

The young actor knew very well that it was the part of a young farmer.

The next day he went to Cranberry where he stayed for three days and gathered much information about the life and the people of that small village.

Then he returned from the village and went to one of the restaurants where actors usually gathered after the performance.

He saw a small party sitting at the table.

The star of that party was Miss Carington.

She noticed a poorly dressed man entered the restaurant.

He approached the famous actress, greeted her and told her much interesting news about her relatives and friends from Cranberry.

The way he spoke made her believe every word he said.

She was sure he was a farmer.

In the end he told the famous actress that her mother wanted to see her again before she died.

Then he gave her a rose he picked up from a bush in front of her house in Cranberry.

Miss Carington was so touched that she couldn’t help crying.

She thanked the young man and invited him to see her again at the hotel before he left the city.

The next morning the young actor dressed in the latest fashion went to the hotel.

He was sure Miss Carington would agree to take him as a partner in the play if he told her everything.

To his surprise he was told that Miss Carington had left for her native village forever.

Highsmith realized that he had acted too well.
