The British Isles The British Isles lie about the same distance from the Equator as that part of Russia lying between Moscow and Volgograd.

The climate of the country, however, is quite different from that of the European part of Russia.

It is much milder.

Even in the most northern parts of Scotland, snow never lies very long on the ground in winter, while in the South of England, snow falls only a few times during the winter and never lies long.

Besides this, the rivers never freeze.

In England there is much rain and fog in winter, and few sunny days.

Summers are never very hot, and there is often very much rain.

Generally speaking, Great Britain is a very damp country.

One of the chef reasons for this dampness is that a continuous stream of warm water, called the Gulf Stream, crosses the Atlantic Ocean from the warm South and washes the western and northern coast of the country.

The Gulf Stream flows on past Northern Scotland, Norway and to the northern coasts of Russia.

It is due to the Gulf Stream that our port Murmansk is free of ice all through the winter.

The British Isles is the name for a collection of about 4000 islands, including Great Britain and Ireland.

This name, the British Isles, is usually only seen on the maps.

Great Britain, known as Britain or GB, is the name for the largest of the islands in the British Isles.

It includes England, Scotland and Wales.

It does not include Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a political term which includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

All of these countries are represented in Parliament of London.

Everybody from the UK is British, but be careful : only people from England are English.

People of Wales think of themselves as Welsh ; people from Scotland as Scottish ; people from Northern Ireland as either British or Irish.

The first inhabitants of the British Isles were normandic Stone Age hunters.

Between the sixth and the third century BC1, the British Isles were invaded be Celtic tribes : people from the land which is now the territory of France and Germany.

During the next 1, 000 years there were many invasions.

The Romans came from Italy in AD2 43 and, in calling the country ‘Britannia’, gave Britain its name.

The Roman invasion lasted four centuries and brought to Britain Christianity and all the achievements of Roman culture.

But the Roman invasion was not peaceful.

The tribes in Scotland never completely surrendered to the Romans.

In Ireland and Scotland there remained the old Celtic way of life with its native customs and traditions.

This is one of the many questions people ask about the country situated on an island lying off the western coast of Europe.

People are puzzled by so many names related to the place : The United Kingdom, Great Britain, Britain, England.

Is there any difference between them all?

Are these the names of one and the same geographic place?

And what are the people living there called?

The British?

The England?

Let us start from th beginning.

Geographically, we speak of the British Isles.

It is a group of islands to the west of continental Europe.

It includes the islands of Great Britain, Ireland and over 6, 000 smaller isles.

Politically, there are two states situated on the British Isles : the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (or simply Ireland, or Eire).

England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland are the countries within the United Kingdom.

Great Britain is not the same as England - they refer to different areas.

Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales.

England is there fore only one part of Great Britain.

If you use the place name 'England' when speaking about the whole of the UK, or the British Isles, you'll make a mistake and may hurt the feelings of those who live in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

People living in the UK are called British.

People from England are English.

If you refer to Welsh and Scottish people as 'English', they may feel hurt.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain

and Northern Ireland

To the west of the continent of Europe lie

two large islands.

The

larger of them is called Great Britain, and the

smaller, Ireland.

These

two and 5, 500 smaller islands form the British Isles.

203

The island of Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales.

The isle of Ireland is divided into Northern Ireland and the Irish Re public.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland form the Unit ed Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The UK (the United

Kingdom)

is the

official name

of the country, occasionally

referred to

as Great Britain, which is, strictly speaking, only a geographic name.

Great

Britain

is washed by

the Atlantic Ocean and the

Irish Sea

from the west, by the North Sea from the north and west.

It is separated

from

the European

continent

by

the English Channel.

The narrowest

part

of

the English Channel is called the Strait of Dover.

The UK is not

a very

large country.

Its territory is about 244, 000 square kilometers,

and

no

point of the

country

is

more than 120 kilometers away from

the sea.

At the same time, the population of the UK is the third largest in Europe, comprising about 60 million people.

It is incorrect to call ev erybody who lives in the United Kingdom “English”, as this is the name only for those who live in England.

The residents of Wales are named Welsh, while the people of Scotland are called Scottish.

The correct common name for English, Scottish and Welsh is British.

Those

who live in Northern Ireland are called Irish.

The climate

of the

British

Isles is generally mild ; it

is seldom cold

in winter and

never

too

hot

in summer.

This is due to the warm

current of the Atlantic Ocean,

Gulf Stream.

Britain was always known

as the country

of fogs,

but

now it is not quite so

because of the

climatic changes : there is maybe less fog than in any other European country.

There are no high mountains and long rivers in the UK.

The highest

mountain is Ben Nevis in the Highlands of Scotland, and the

longest

rivers are the Severn and the Thames.

Geographically, the UK has a very convenient position, being

locat

ed on the crossroads from Europe to America.

This is one of the rea sons why Britain was (and is up to the present time) one of the leading world powers.

The capital of the country is London.

It is situated on the river Thames.

Britain has an ancient and glorious history.

It used to be the great empire “where the sun never sets”.

It gave the world many famous scientists, writers, political leaders and explorers, such as Newton, Dar win, Drake, Shakespeare, Churchill and others.

For centuries monarchs ruled Britain.

The constitutional monarchy is still preserved in the country, though it is practically no more than a

tradition and

a

tribute

to

the past.

Queen Elisabeth II is Head of State.

Her power is limited by

the parliament, which is elected every four

years.

The leader of the party that has won the majority during the elections becomes the Prime Minister.

In fact, he becomes the head of state and forms the Cabinet.

The second largest party forms the official Opposition.
