THE FIRST WOMAN IN BUSINESS At the start of the twentieth century the idea of women in business seemed crazy.

In those days men held all the positions of power and made all the decisions about money.

They believed that a woman` s place was at home, looking after her children, cooking for her family and managing the house.

If a woman needed to work she could perhaps find a job in a shop or in a factory, but she had no chance of working as a businessman or a banker, or a lawyer.

Women` s fashions in the USA and Europe at that time supported their position in society.

Fashionable women wore long dresses that almost touched the ground.

This made it difficult for them to drive a car, ride a horse or even walk quickly.

But many women were not happy with their position in society, and they didn't like the clothes they had to wear.

One of those people was a French woman called Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel.

When she went into business in 1910, she planned to change clothes that women wore.

But over the next sixty years she did much more than that, as she became the richest and the most successful businesswoman.

Coco Chanel had no experience of business when she opened her first hat shop in Paris in 1910.

She was only twenty - seven years old and she came from an ordinary family.

Many of Coco`s customers in her first shop were her young women friends.

They loved the simple but beautiful hats and dresses that Coco made for them, and soon her shop started to do well.

In the old days a number of people were travelling from Bristol to London.

During the long journey the passengers became friendly and didn't hide anything from each other.

When the conversation turned upon robbers, a man told he had ten guineas in gold but didn't know where best to hide them.

A woman advised him to put them into his boots.

Later on really a robber stopped the coach and demanded the money.

Then to the astonishment of all others, the woman who had advised to hide her neighbour's money in his boot said : «I have no money, but this man has ten guineas in his boot».

«The robber took the ten guineas and left.

The robbed man began to accuse the woman of being in league with the robber.

But the woman said : «Wait till London and I'll explain the thing to you».

When they came to London she told that she had had a large sum of money with her and that she had told the man's secret to turn the robber's attention from her.

She begged now to excuse her and awarded the man with one hundred pounds.

One dollar and eighty - seven cents.

That was all.

Every day, when she went to the shops, she spent very little money.

She bought the cheapest meat, the cheapest vegetables.

And when she was tired, she still walked round and round the shops to find the cheapest food.

She saved every cent possible.

Delia counted the money again.

There was no mistake.

One dollar and eighty - seven cents.

That was all.

And the next day was Christmas.

She couldn’t do anything about it.

She could only sit down and cry.

So she sat there, in the poor little room, and she cried.

Delia lived in this poor little room, in New York, with her husband, James Dillingham Young.

They also had a bedroom, and a kitchen and a bathroom – all poor little rooms.

James Dillingham Young was lucky, because he had a job, but it was not a good job.

These rooms took most of his money.

Delia tried to find work, but times were bad, and there was no work for her.

But when Mr James Dillingham Young came home to his rooms, Mrs James Dillingham Young called him ‘Jim’ and put her arms round him.

And that was good.

" If l joined a circus, life would be far more exciting.

After a couple of years, the seal became a famous acrobat and was soon very rich.

A few years later, dressed in her fine clothes and expensive shoes, the seal went back home to her rock to visit her old friends.

She showed the other seals all the new tricks she had learnt in the circus and then asked them to show her something they could do.

Очень срочно, пожалуста даю 50баллов

Сюзи чувствовала себя невозможным пребывание в опустевшей студии больше, Susie felt it impossible to stay in the deserted studio any longer, and accepted a friend’s invitation to spend the winter in Italy.

Margaret had not written to her, and she could not make herself write to her.

In Rome Susie had news of Oliver Haddo and his wife.

They had spent some time there, and the little English circle was still talking of their eccentricities.

Oliver Haddo had excited attention by the extravagance of his costume and manner ; and Margaret by her beauty.

She was seen in her box at the opera every night, and her diamonds were the envy of all women.

But suddenly the pair had disappeared without saying a word to anybody.

It was reported that they were now in Monte Carlo.

Susie had intended to pass the spring on the Riviera, but when she heard that the Haddos were there, she hesitated.

She did not want to run the risk of seeing them, and yet she had a strong desire to find out exactly how things were going.

At last curiosity won and she went to Monte Carlo.

After two or three days she saw them at the tables, but they were so absorbed in their game that they did not notice her.

Margaret was playing, but Haddo stood behind her and directed her movements.

Susie was unable to recognize in her the girl who had been her friend.

What struck her most was that there was in Margaret’s expression an extraordinary likeness to Haddo’s.

In spite of her beauty, she had Oliver’s evil look which suggested that she saw with his eyes.

They had won great sums that evening.

Taking up the money, Haddo touched her on the shoulder, and she followed him.

Susie learned that the Haddos had rooms at the most expensive of the hotels.

They knew few English except those who had bad reputations, but seemed to prefer the society of those foreigners whose wealth and eccentricities made them the centre of that little world.

Margaret moved among all those odd people with a cold mysteriousness that excited everybody’s curiosity.

Oliver’s eccentric imagination invented whimsical festivities and orgies that were held in the dark sitting - room of the hotel.

He wanted to revive the mystical ceremonies of old religions imitating those he had seen in Eastern places.

No one understood his true relations with his wife, and it was said that he was sometimes very cruel to her.

Susie’s heart sank when she heard this ; but several times when she saw Margaret, she seemed in the highest spirits.

Then the same thing that had happened in Rome happened here again ; they suddenly disappeared.

Susie had not been to London for some time, and as the spring advanced she remembered that her friends had invited her.

Though she would not confess it to herself, her desire to see Arthur was the strongest of her motives.

She knew that he would never care for her, but she was glad to be his friend.

In London she wrote to Arthur, and he invited her to the opera.

Susie was terrified at the change that had taken place in him.

He looked ten years older, he had lost weight, and his hair was white.

But what most struck her was the change of his expression.

The look of pain which she had seen on his face that last evening in the studio has now become settled, so that it changed its countenance.

He was more silent than ever, and when he spoke, it was a strange low voice that seemed to come from a long way off.
