Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Arthur’s mother hada passion for books and was a master storyteller.

There was little money in the family.

AfterArthur reached his ninth birthday, the wealthy members of the Doyle family offered to payfor his studies.

He was in tears all the way to England, where for seven years he had to go toa boarding school.

Arthur hated the cruelty and punishment at school.

During the school years, Arthur’s only moments of happiness were when he wrote to hismother, and also when he practised sports, mainly cricket, at which he was very good.

It wasduring these difficult years at boarding school that Arthur understood he also had a talent forstorytelling.

Everyone has read stories about Sherlock Holmes, who was a famous detective.

He was the most famous detective of all time.

The author of all the stories was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Once Sir Arthur arrived in Paris.

He took a cab and asked the cabman to take him to a big hotel, where he was going to spend the night.

The cabman brought him to the hotel.

When he received his fare he said, “Thank you very much, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

” Sir Arthur was surprised, “How do you know who am I?

” he asked.

“Well, sir, I read in the newspapers yesterday that you were coming to Paris from the South of France.

Your hat and your clothes told me that you were English.

I put all together and guessed at once that you were Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

” “That is wonderful, ” said Sir Arthur.

“With so few facts you were really able to know me.

” “Of course, ” said the taxi driver, “your name was on both of your traveling bags.

That also helped.

” The cabman played a joke on Conan Doyle.

He had a sister who was older than himself, and there were several other children in the family.

When Charles was seven, her was sent to a school.

He was not a strong child.

He did not like to play cricket or football and spent all his free time reading.

In 1821 the family went to London and little Charles left behind his happiest years of his childhood.

His father was in debts, and the family became poorer and poorer.

The boy had to give up his studies.

Mr. Dickens was put into the debtor’s prison.

Little Charles learned had to know all horrors and cruelty of thelarge city.

He had to go to work at the blacking factory.

He worked there from morning till night.

When his father came put of a prison, Charles was sent to a school for some time.

Soon he got work as a clerk.

Then he learned stenography and became a reporter in Parliament.

In 1836 at the age of 24 Charles Dickens published his first book.

It was the collection of stories.

The title of the book was “Sketches by Boz”.

These were followed by “Pickwick Papers” and “Oliver Twist” and many other famous novels.

Charles Dickens is one of the greatest writers of the 19th century.

His novels are now translated into the most languages of the world.

Charles Dickens, one of the greatest and most popular English novelists, was born on the 7th of February, 1812, in a small English town.

He was a weak child and did not like to take part in noisy and active games.

The little boy was very clever and learnt to read at an early age.

He read a lot of books in his childhood.

When he was about six, someone took him to the theatre for the first time.

He saw a play by Shakespeare and liked it so much that he decided to write a play of his own.

When it was ready, he performed it with some of his friends.

Everybody enjoyed the performance, and the little writer felt very happy.

When Dickens was nine years old, the family moved to London where they lived in an old house in the suburbs.

They had a very hard life.

There were several younger children in the family besides Charles.

The future writer could not even go to school, because at that time his father was in the Marshalsea Debtor’s Prison.

There was nobody in London to whom Mr Dickens could go for money, and his wife with all the children except Charles went to join him in the prison.

The family lived there until Mr Dickens could pay his debts.

Those were the most unhappy days of all Charles’ life.

The boy worked from early morning till late at night to help his family.

Charles was only able to start going to school when he was nearly twelve, and his father was out of prison.

He very much wanted to study, but he did not finish his schooling.

After two years of school he began working again.

He had to work hard to earn his living, and tried very many trades, but he did not like any of them.

His ambition was to study and become a well - educated man.

At the age of fifteen he often went to the famous library of the British Museum.

He spent a lot of time in the library reading - room.

He read and studied there and in this way he got an education.

Later he discribe this period of his life in his novel "David Copperfield".

When he was 25 years old he became one of the most famous and best newspaper reporters in London.

"The Pick - wick Papers" was the first great work which was published in April, 1836.

In the last years of his life Dickens began to meet with his readers and gave public readings from his own works.

He died in the summer, 1870.
