She sat down upon the bench and began to read the book.
Her dress was grey and simple.
Her face was very beautiful.
She came there at the same hour yesterday, and the day before yesterday, and there was a young man who knew it.
The young man came near.
At the moment her book fell on the ground.
The young man picked up the book, returned it to the girl, said a few words about the weather, and stood waiting.
The girl looked at his simple coat and said, “Sit down if you like, the light is too bad for reading, let’s talk”.

A girl left the cashier’s desk and the girl in grey took her place.
The young man walked slowly down the street, then got into the white automobile and said the driver, “To the club, Henry!

When the priest refused, Robin Hood pulled off the priest's coat and put it on Little John.
So Little John married the young people and they returned together to the merry Greenwood.

One Sunday some visitors to Hyde Park, who were sitting on benches quietly enjoying their sandwiches, were suddenly surprised by a strange young man.
The young man was pushing a pram.
The baby in the pram was crying loudly.
The young man stopped and said softly, "You should take it easy, Tom.
You should control yourself, Tom.
" The baby calmed down for a minute but then it started to cry again.
The young man stopped, took out a little toy out of the bag, gave the toy to the child and said, "You should take it easy, Tom.
You should control yourself, Tom.
"
They went on, but soon the child started to cry again.
The young man stopped, took some chocolate out of his bag and gave it to the baby.
"Don't worry, Tom.
It's OK, Tom.
You'll be all right, Tom, " he said.
But the baby didn't calm down.
It just cried louder and louder.
An old woman who had been watching the man came up to him and smiled.
"You're a great father, " she said, "You know how to talk to your baby, in a nice, quiet voice.
" Then she looked into the pram and asked, "What's wrong with you, Tom?
Why are you crying?
"
The father looked at the woman strangely and said, "The baby is a girl.
Her name's Sabrina.
Tom is my name.

But they were very expensive, and as he had very little money he had to leave the shop without buying anything.
Making for the door he suddenly heard a noise : one of the vases fell on the floor and broke to pieces.
A brilliant idea came to his mind.
He came up to the counter and asked the salesman to wrap up the broken vase he wanted to buy.
The salesman got a little surprised but did what the young man had asked him to do.
The young man took the parcel and went straight to the girl’s place.
By the time he entered the room the guests had already gathered.
Everybody was enjoying the party.
Some of the people were dancing, other were talking, joking and laughing.
Saying “many happy returns of the day”, the young man told the girl that he had bought a small present for her.
With these words he began to unwrap the parcel.
Suddenly he got pale and said “I am afraid, I’ve broken it.
There were so many people in the bus…” But when he unwrapped the parcel, he saw that the salesman had wrapped up each piece of the vase separately.

Long, long ago there was a lake of cold water in Kenya.
Many animals came at night to the lake to drink some water.
But people never came to the lake at night : the animals could kill and eat them.
Now, a rich man who had a beautiful daughter once said : „The young man, who will go to the lake in the evening and stay in the cold water till morning, will have my daughter for his wife.
”
There lived a poor young man who loved the rich man’s daughter very much.
He said to his mother, „I shall try to stay all night in the lake and then marry my dear girl”.
„No, no”, the mother said, „you are my only son!
”. The water in the lake is very cold, and the animals will eat you up.
Don’t go there!
” She cried and cried, but her son said : „Mother, don’t cry, I must try.
I love her so much!
”
So the young man went to the girl’s father.
He told him that he wanted to go to the lake and stay in the cold water all night.
The rich man sent his servants to the place where they could watch the young man.
When night carne, the young man went to the lake and his mother followed him, but he didn’t see her.
There was a hill forty paces away from the place where the young man went into the water.
The woman climbed up the hill and made up a fire there.
The wild animals saw the fire and were afraid to go near that place.
The young man saw the fire too.
He understood that his mother was there.
He thought of his mother’s love, and it was easier for him to stay all night in the very cold water.
Morning came.
The young man went to the rich man’s house.
The rich man saw him and said, „My servants say that there was a fire on the hill forty paces from the lake.
It warmed you and that is why you could stay all night in the water.
So you can’t marry my daughter.
Good - bye”.
The young man was very angry.
He went to the judge.
“Well”,
the judge said, „this is a very simple case”.
The next morning the young man with his mother and the rich man with his servants came before the judge.
There were many people there who wanted to hear the case.
The judge asked for a pot of cold water.
Then he walked forty paces from the pot and made a fire.
„Now”, he said, „we shall wait a little until the water is warm”.
The people cried : „But the fire is so far away, it can’t warm the water in the pot”.
Then the judge said : „How could that young man warm himself at a fire forty paces away?
”
So the case was over, and the young man married the rich man’s daughter.
They lived happily for many years.
