Filled with curiosiý, Elizabeth opened the letter and, walking slowly along the lane, began to rеаd it.

"Do not bе аlаrmеd, madam, bу аnу fear that this letter contains а renewal of those offers which wеrе last night sodistasteful to уоu.

"Yоu must раrdоn the freedom with which I demand уоur attcntion, but two offences you last night laid to mуcharge.

The first was that, regardless of the feelings of either, I had detached Мr Bingley frоm уоur sister - and theother that I had ruined the prosperitý of Мr Wickham.

Whеn the following account of my actions and their motives has been read, I hоре to bе relieved, to some extent, frоm the severity of blame rvhich was last night so liberally bestowed, "I had not been long iп Hertfordshire before I saw that Bingley рrеfеrrеd уоur еldеr sister to any other young womanin the country.

I had often seen him in love bеfоrе, but it was not till the dance at Netherfield that I bесаmе aware that his partiality for Miss Bennet was beyond what I had ечеr witnessed in him.

Yоur sister I also watched.

Неr look andmanners wеrе open, cheerful and as engaging as еvеr, but I саmе to the conclusion that she fоr hеr part, was quite indifferent to Bingley.

If you have nоt bееn mistaken here, lmust have been in еrrоr and уоur resentment has nоt been unrеаsоnаblе.

But there wеrе other causes of rерugnаnсе.

The situation of уоur mother's fanliiy, though objectionable, was nothing in соmраrisоn with that total want of propriety so frequently displayed bу herself, and уоur three уоungеr sisters.

Pardon me.

It pains mе to offend you.

Let it give you consolation to know that I could hаvе nothing but praisefor the conduct of yourself and Miss Bennet.

I can only say that I wished to рrеsеrvе my friend frоm whаt I thought to Ье а most uпhарру connection.

I persuaded him that уоur sister did not rеturn his affection ; and took him off to Lоndon.

Тhеrе is but one part of mу conduct on which I do not rеflесt with satisfaction ; it is that I concealed frоm him уоur sister's being in town.

Не is ignorant of it еvеn yet.

Реrhарs this concealment was beneatlr me.

It is done, however, and it was done for the best.

If I hаvе wounded your sister's feelings, it was unknоwingly done.

Jewls read a story to the class.

Dana hated stories.

The last book Mrs.

Jewls had read was a story about a pig and spider.

The pig was really cute and the spider was very wise.

Dana thought it was a horrible book.

It made her laugh too much.

Everyone else laughed too, but the problem was that Dana always kept laughing long after everyone else in the class had stopped.

It was very embarrassing .

And sometimes she broke out laughing at a part that wasn't even funny because she remembered something funny that had happened earlier.

You want your classmate to go to the rock concert .

You don't want to miss the concert because it is going to be exciting .

The rock star is only coming for one night.

Another reason why you are eager to go is that you have not heard really good music for a long time.

It was in October that you last went to a concert.

You also say that it was last spring that you and your friend had some fun together.

Every day in one of the streets of Vienna you could see a blind man playing the violin.

His dog sat near him with a cap in his mouth.

People, who were passing them, dropped coins into the cap.

One day, when the weather was very cold, the man was playing for a long time, but nobody wanted to give him anything.

The poor man thought that he would have to go to bed without supper.

He was so tired and so weak that he stopped playing.

At that moment a young man came uр to him and asked him why he stopped playing.

The blind man said he had played for two hours but nobodyr had given him anything.

"Give me your violin.

I shall help you", said the man.

And with these words he began to play.

He played so well that people began to gather and soon there was a big crowd.

Everybody was eager to listen to the fine music and to thank the young man for the pleasure.

Soon the cap was full of money.

"I don't know how to thank you", said the blind man.

"Who are you?

" "I am Paganini", was the answer.

The Littles 1 liked to play ping - pong, but when they played it, the little balls always rolled under chairs, sofas, and radiators.

So the players had to stop playing 2 and begin to look for the balls.

Very soon Stuart learned to find them quicker than anybody else in the family.

He found them under chairs and hot radiators and pushed them with all his might.

3 It was hard work, and it was difficult for Stuart to roll a ball along.

But he liked it.

The Littles had a piano in their dining - room, and Mrs.

Little liked to play it in the evenings.

It was a good piano, but one of the keys stuck sometimes, and did not work properly.

That was very unpleasant.

Mrs. Little said : "It's all because of 4 the bad weather.

" But we must say that this key did not work even on bright days.

George always got very angry 5 when he played the piano and the key stuck.

(To tell the truth, 6 he did not play the piano very well even on the days when the key worked properly, but still he got angry.

) One day George said : "Let us put Stuart inside the piano.

"You know that inside every piano there is a lot of soft hammers, and when you play the piano each hammer strikes a different cord, and you hear music.

So George said : "You must stay inside, Stuart, and push up the key every time it sticks.

" 7And he put Stuart inside the piano.

It was hard work, because the noise inside the piano was terrible, and Stuart was quite deaf after half an hour.

Besides he was afraid that a hammer might hit him on the head.

But he liked this work just the same, 8 because he liked music.

Mr. and Mrs.

Little often spoke about Stuart when he was not around.

9 To have a mouse in the family was a very unusual thing.

Stuart was so small that sometimes his parents did not know what to do with him.

"He must not know that he is a mouse, " they decided.

Mr. Little said that they must not mention the word mice in their conversation.

He made Mrs.

Little tear out a page 10 from a song - book with the song "Three Blind Mice.

"11"He must not know too much about mice, " said Mr.

Little.

"He will be afraid that somebody will cut off his tail with a knife.

Such things make children dream bad dreams12 when they go to bed at night.

""Yes, " said Mrs.

Little, "and we must also think about the poem' 'Twas the night before Christmas.

' 13 Do you remember it?

" And she showed her husband the book : 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

14 "That's right, " said Mr.

Little, "but what shall we say when we come to that line in the poem?

We shall have to say something.

We can't simply say : "Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house not a creature was stirring.

' There is no rhyme here!

""What about 15 loise?

" said George.

They decided that louse was the best word.

So Mrs.

Little rubbed out the wordmouse from the poem and wrote the word louse instead.

And Stuart always thought that the poem went this way : 16'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, not even a louse.

But there was one more 17 thing that worried Mr.

And Mrs.

Little.

There was a mouse - hole in the kitchen.

Mr. Little did not know where this hole led to.

18 He was afraid that one day 19 Stuart might get into it.

"After all, he looks like a mouse and all mice like to go into holes, " he said to his wife.

What finally awoke Ben was the engine coughing.

«Please wake up!

» shouted Davy.

«What’s the matter?

» «Push the lever forward, » whispered Ben.

Davy couldn’t have known about the lever and now Ben wasn’t able to point to it.

But the boy saw the direction of his father’s eyes in time and the engine took up again.

«What direction do I take?

» Davy cried again.

«You’re not telling me how to get the right direction.

» «Follow the coast.

Keep it on your right.

And for God’s sake, don’t do anything else.

It’ll be all right, Davy…» Ben could see the sharp profile of Davy’s pale face with his dark eyes.

The boy had remembered how to level off and to keep the speed.

«He’ll do it, » Ben whispered to himself and then fainted again.

At three thousand feet, on his own, Davy did not think he could ever cry again.

He had run out of tears.

He had boasted only once in his ten years of life that his father was a pilot.

He had remembered everything his father had told him about flying, but he had guessed a lot more that his father had not told him.

Now Davy couldn’t even look at his father because he was horribly covered in blood.

He didn’t want his father to die, but he knew that it was now a possibility.

People did die.

The tears that Davy thought had dried up in him were now in his dark eyes, and he felt them running down his cheeks.

Ben felt a sharp pain and opened his eyes.

«Davy!

What’s happened?

What are you doing!

» he managed to shout.

«We are almost there.

I can see the buildings of Cairo, » Davy said.

«But the plane doesn’t want to go down.

» «Cut your engine.

…» «I did, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

» «Use the tail lever, » Ben said, and the plane put its nose down into a dive.

«Cut your engine!

» Ben shouted again.

He knew that getting a plane off the ground and flying it was easy but getting it down was another thing.

The wind was blowing them back up.

They lost air speed now because the nose was up.

If the engine stopped at this height in this wind, they’d crash into a thousand pieces.

… They were approaching the airfield and the dust was like a yellow sea over the land.

But then Ben saw the plane.

«Look out!

You’ll hit that plane, » Ben yelled.

Ben could see a big four - engined plane that was taking off.

If it was only taking off and not testing its motors, they’d be all right.

Ben closed his eyes and when he opened them again, the big plane was directly in their path but moving so quickly that they were going to miss it.

Now the yellow dust was just below them.

«Six inches, » Ben cried to Davy painfully.

«Six inches, Davy… Wait!

Not yet!

Not yet…!

» he cried.

It was when they reached the last inch from the ground that Ben lost his nerve at last.

He was trying to shout, «Now!

Now! NOW!

» but fainted again.

He hardly felt it when the plane’s wheels hit the ground.

When the plane’s tail finally touched down, Ben knew it was the last inch of it.

The plane moved uncontrollably for a while and when at last it stopped dead, he heard only silence and thought that it wasn’t time to give in yet.

She was still safe from his terrible secret.

Narrowing his eyes at Scott, Allison’s father put a hand on her shoulder.

Chris Argent was the leader of the werewolf hunters, and he had shot Scott through the arm with a crossbow bolt the very first night Scott had shifted.

Derek had rescued Scott and told him about the hunters.

It had been a terrible shock when Scott had discovered that Mr.

Argent was also Allison’s father.

So far, though, Mr.

Argent hadn’t realized that Scott was the werewolf he had nearly caught just a few short weeks before.

Now, in the parking lot, Allison took one last look at Scott, as if she were memorizing what he looked like, and then father and daughter walked toward Allison’s car.

Mr. Argent opened the passenger side door and Allison got in.

Obviously he was going to drive her car home, and Allison’s mom would take their SUV back to their house.

As Mr.

Argent shut the car door, he turned and gave Scott a last, long, hard, so - very - pissed - off stare.

But it was only the look of a protective father angry with a boy for encouraging his daughter to ditch school.

We’re so busted, Scott thought.

It was not the perfect ending he had imagined for the perfect birthday for Allison.

It was just that she’d looked so stricken when all those balloons from Lydia had floated out of her locker this morning.

Scott hadn’t even known it was her birthday.

Turned out she hated celebrating her birthday at school.

Scott hadn’t known Allison was seventeen, a year older than the other kids in their class— older than him—and didn’t want anyone to know.

It was because of all the moving around.

But people in other towns had assumed all kinds of things—that she was dumb, that she’d had a baby.

He’d wanted to protect her from a day like that.

So they’d taken off.

And the day had been magical.

Once darkness had fallen, she’d said she never wanted it to end.

And then she’d told him that she wished she could spend the night with him.
